The big ticket free agents signed contracts long ago, leaving teams to pick over a small list of leftovers if they want some veteran help at this point in the offseason.

The Browns did that and found something they liked in linebacker Larry Grant. The team announced Wednesday that they have signed Grant after he tried out for the team at last weekend’s rookie minicamp.

Grant played two games for the Bears last season after opening the year serving a four-game suspension for violating the league’s performance-enhancing drug policy. Before that, he spent two years with the 49ers and three years with the Rams, playing in every game from 2009-2012 as a backup inside linebacker and special teams regular for the two NFC West clubs.

He’ll try to earn the same role for the Browns, who signed Karlos Dansby as a free agent and added Christian Kirksey to the position group in the draft.
