The Chargers, whose backfield depth is one of their strengths, have added to their numbers at tailback.

The club has signed rookie running back Branden Oliver, an undrafted free agent from the University at Buffalo, the club said Wednesday.

The 5-foot-8, 203-pound Oliver rushed for 4,049 yards and 33 touchdowns in four seasons at Buffalo, racking up 1,535 yards and 15 TDs on 310 carries as a senior in 2013.

Ryan Mathews, Donald Brown and Danny Woodhead are the Chargers’ top three tailbacks. The club also drafted Arizona State’s Marion Grice in Round Six of the 2014 NFL Draft. In short, Oliver seems most likely to compete for one of the last backfield depth chart spots or a position on the practice squad.

In other roster moves Wednesday, the Chargers waived rookie offensive tackle Ian White. They also waived first-year wideout Tobais Palmer with an injury designation.

Glad to see BO get picked up. He reminded me of a lot of Maurice Jones-Drew in college. He’ll have to prove it but he sure looked like he belonged in the NFL

Oliver is a great addition to the team. He is an amazing running back, and when given the opportunity his strength and ability will shine. He should certainly make the 53-man roster. I can’t wait to see what he does on the field! Chargers number one; great move on getting Oliver.

RB Marion Grice will be red-shirted. That will give him a year to get health and learn.

This kid is a good player. Watched a lot of him when I was a student at UB. He’s a bowling ball with good speed. Nice pickup by the chargers

I just don’t understand how any football fan looks at the Chargers and gets all hyped about a Super Bowl run. A defense that is suspect on an annual basis and a QB who must have a lot of friends in media….sorry, there is nothing special about this team.
