Champ Bailey will live without being No. 24

AP

Every offseason, there are stories about players giving up their uniform numbers to new teammates in exchange for cash, a donation to charity or some other compensation.

That’s especially true when the new teammate is a more established player, but not every player is willing to part with their digits. Saints cornerback Corey White is such a player. White is now playing with Champ Bailey, who has worn No. 24 throughout his career and approached White about giving up the number this season but White told Bailey he preferred to keep things as they are.

“I just got to live with it,” Bailey said, via the Baton Rouge Advocate. “I wasn’t going to make him an offer or anything like that. I’m not paying for anything. I think if the roles were reversed, I probably would’ve considered it, but he didn’t want to. It’s his own decision.”

Bailey will wear No. 27 instead and will compete with White to be the cornerback across from Keenan Lewis. If Bailey’s healthy, he should win that battle regardless of the number on his jersey during the competition.

  1. I saw some people saying White should have handed the number over to Bailey. Why? He’s competing with him for a job. I love knowing the kid has a spine.

  2. Corey White gonna get cut so no need to pay for it.

Reminds me of when DeMarre Carroll made a big deal of the Utah Jazz last year “giving” #3 to Trey Burke even though he was still on the team… End result? Jazz cut Carroll and Burke got #3

  4. during the next negotiations for collective bargaining, the owners should use numbers as a fake sticking point. “we want to change all player numbers to 3 digits. every player will have to get a new number.” players: “we don’t want that. we love our numbers. we will concede 200 Million dollars in revenues.” owners: “ok”

  5. Corey White: WHO?

Champ Bailey: Future Hall of Famer. You tell me why he should. It’s called respect. Champ Bailey is the classiest person on the team, and he was with the Broncos as well. Not just that he is a model citizen. This White kid should have offered it to him out of simple respect. He most likely will never have half the career Champ has had. Stupid.

  6. Champ will probably get his number eventually, Corey White couldn’t cover the water boy last season, so with P Rob, Jean-Baptiste, and Bailey, White probably won’t even make the roster!

  7. White did a good job actually. It’s obvious some folks weren’t paying any attention and just fired off lazy, opinionated nonsense from their keyboard.

  8. It shouldn’t be about money .. Champ is a HOF corner who built a legacy and I think out of respect white should have considered handing it over. Champ is a rare corner to be able to accomplish all he has; white should respect him and his legacy and give him the 24 IMO.

  9. Corey Whit should respect his elders. i usually don’t chimein on such things but unless you have a connection to the number (your lucky number, worn it all your life kinda thing) you should give it up out of respect. Shouldn’t be surprised, these youths don’t respect anyone in real life, why should the football field be different?

  10. Like the attitude from Corey White. Come in here and try to take my job, now you want my number? I don’t think so old man.

For those not in the know, White was fantastic as the Saints #2 corner during the last half of last season and is a good young player.

  11. You guys keep talking about “taking his job” the best thing champ will do for white is teach him a few things. The kid is gonna get to learn from a HOF who is his TEAMMATE.

  12. NFL will change the rule next year regarding numbers. all players will have to wear the last 4 digits of their SSN as their jersey number. problem solved.

  13. No way I would have given up my number. The kid should have the attitude that he won’t give up anything, and that’s what this shows. White’s not some scrub, that’s HIS job Bailey is trying to get.

  14. Maybe the kid wore that number too in college and/or high school. Maybe his family are all wearing his Jerseys now. Most of these type of transactions is like 10k or so to the kid wearing the desired number. Champ is a chump for not offering a token amount like that (with the money thins guy has banked)

  15. Sure I’ll get roasted for saying this…but Champ is a very classy guy and future hall of famer, They are competing, but Champ has forgotten more then White will learn in 10 season.Show Champ repect and let him have his #

  16. Champ Bailey needs to check himself. Dude is what, 38? Get over yourself, and get out of the younger person’s way. Too many jocks hang on too long, and become the subject of derision and jokes. Champ is close to that.

  17. There’s at least four other CBs on the Saints roster that is better than White, including Champ. He’s terrible in coverage.

  18. Corey White made it his personal responsibility to let people run past, through, or around him last season. He was easily the weakest link in an injured defensive backfield. He’s going to be the best bench warmer in the league this season, if he isn’t cut that is!

  19. i don’t think he should be playing any more at this point, but if he loves the game and wants to keep playing then good for him. and corey white is an absolute nobody, so when a guy who is one of the 5 best of all time at your position comes in you should probably let him have the number and spend every minute you have with him trying to learn and get better. loser.

  20. Corey White has only been in the league a few years, it takes good corners a few years in the NFL to become quality cover guys. He’ll surprise some of you naysayers this year…with all due respect to Champ, White did what he felt was right for him, and Bailey seemed to accept that quite well in my opinion…

  21. Kind of like when Fred Thomas would not give up #22 for Deuce McAllister. Remember Fred Thomas?

  22. Who cares ? He asked for the #, White declined, so whatever. Wear 27, not like its an ugly #. And Corey White is really not that good. He gave up so many 3rd down completions last season.

So it isn’t possible that Corey White has been wearing this number all his life, or even that it is his favorite number? And what about the fact that Champ is on his way out of the league? This kid should forfeit his number altogether so someone else can have it for one or two seasons, tops?

  24. I’m glad there’s some people on here that know what there talking about . Corey white considering its his 2cd year did a good job even as injuries plagued us . He is physical and could improve a lot over the off season . As for the number thing I think he should have given champ it but like he said he wanted his number . I can’t wait for football season 🙂
