NaVorro Bowman restructures deal with 49ers for cap space

The 49ers have been fortunate to have some salary cap flexibility in recent years, which comes from having a cheap, young, good quarterback.

But they apparently decided they needed a little extra room.

According to Matt Maiocco of, the 49ers have re-worked linebacker NaVorro Bowman’s deal to gain more than $2.6 million in salary cap space.

They did it by converting $3.27 million of his salary into a bonus, prorating it over remaining five years of his deal.

It creates bigger numbers on the back side of the deal, the kind of mortgaging the 49ers haven’t had to do as much of as other teams.

Converting that money into signing bonus means that the team feels his health must be improving. That is good news as we all hope he can get back to where he was before that terrible injury in the SF/SEA game.

Next to Fletcher, Bowman is my favorite LB, hope he comes back strong.

Reworking the contract of a stud like Bowman to make room to eventually re-sign a scumbag like Aldon Smith.

And I don’t see Kaep being worth any more than $12 million per year.

Let’s hope so. That will set the Niners back years.

Ahh… the old “higher numbers on the back end of the contract” ruse. That’s when a player on the downside of his career is supposed to really cash in?
Uhh, no that’s when the team will release him before he sees any of that money.
