Manziel may sue lawsuit prankster

Whoever filed the fake lawsuit against Browns quarterback Johnny Manziel may be getting sued.

The woman named as the plaintiff in the lawsuit, HLN contributor Samantha Schacher, said via Twitter that the civil complaint filed in a Florida federal court is indeed a hoax.  She claims that the person who filed the lawsuit is named Jonathan Lee Riches, who has a history of filing lawsuits.  To say the least.

Riches, who surely has none, now may be on the receiving end of a lawsuit from Manziel.  Via USA Today, agent Erik Burkhardt said that litigation is possible.

“We absolutely will protect our client to the fullest extent of the law,” Burkhardt said.

The better move at this point would be to do nothing.  Even though a small percentage of the audience will believe the lawsuit is real no matter what anyone says — and an even larger slice of Bengals, Steelers, and/or Ravens fans will incorporate terms from the filing into their taunts of Manziel — most reasonable people realize that it’s a hoax.  Doing something about it will only keep the thing alive even longer.

Say what you want about Manziel, but he has NEVER been in trouble with the law.

I hope he sues and bankrupts the prankster.

I agree, don’t give the idiot any more press time. Maybe Samatha Schacher should sue the guy.

However, the courts should go after the guy for filing false claims and using false identification. But, it’s Florida.

I hope Johnny Lawsuit takes this moron to the cleaners. An example needs to be made here. Put ‘em in a bodybag, Johnny!!

  4. pooflingingmonkey says: May 23, 2014 4:31 PM

He should sue. People are going to making vienna sausage jokes at his expense for the foreseeable future.

    I know I will.

  5. norseyapper says: May 23, 2014 4:31 PM

There should be a legal charge against the guy. Seriously, filing frivolous “hoax” lawsuits should not be allowed and a significant fine should be involved at least.

  6. mackcarrington says: May 23, 2014 4:31 PM

Every person or corporate entity mentioned in that thing should sue.

  7. restorativejusticeprogram says: May 23, 2014 4:31 PM

    Only in America.
Your justice system is all about enriching those that administer it (cops, lawyers, court staff, judges) — and nothing about Justice.

Today’s newspaper is tomorrow’s fish wrap.

Best to ignore it and it will disappear from the headlines.

  12. arzcardinals says: May 23, 2014 4:40 PM

He shouldn’t have to sue, the state should arrest the prankster for falsifying legal documents. It’s one thing to post this hoax on a blog, but to file it in an official court house is a whole different ball of wax. Arrest him allow him a night in jail, release him on a small bond and send him to 100 hours of community service….done deal. The court house can not let this go undone now that everyone knows you can fake a legal document and get it in the press.

  14. brownsalwaysrebuilding says: May 23, 2014 4:41 PM

I haven’t read that the guy that filed the lawsuit has been arrested… but isn’t that incredibly illegal to file a fake lawsuit?

Johnny shouldn’t have to sue the guy, he should be in jail already.

    ——————————————————-

He was trying to break up a fight between his drunk and another patron. And he identified himself using a fake ID. This stuff happens a lot on college campuses.

Plus he didn’t willingly go out looking for trouble.

I think the more important thing is for him to set an example. Bankrupt the guy. With social media today, a story like this can spread like wildfire, and if he comes after this guy hard, it will make it less likely for people to do something similar in the future.

You’re not taking into account Johnny’s lust for money. He’ll sue & make that stupid hand gesture.

Send the “prankster” to federal prison, for filing a false complaint.

I don’t understand what is so fun about filling fake lawsuits. This guy definitely deserves to be punished though since it does cost the taxpayers money. I’m sure he is getting exactly what he wanted though, publicity

  23. mikemcdorman says: May 23, 2014 4:59 PM

    I’ll tell you one thing:

If you don’t think this public humiliation will fuel his desire to be the best and prove the haters wrong, you’re crazy.

Things just got personal. He’s gonna respond like a bat out of hell.

    Go Browns. Super Bowl.

  24. djstat says: May 23, 2014 5:00 PM

  25. casualmalexlfan says: May 23, 2014 5:04 PM

I wouldn’t really be surprised if Jonathan Lee Riches really did file the fake lawsuit. Hes the same guy that tried to sue Kim Kardashian and Kanye West for being terrorists.

How do I make the money sign with my keyboard? Its the only thing johnny cares about. Selling Memorabilia, making trademarks, doing the money sign as he’s drafted, and now suing pranksters. Glad he’s not on my team. I’d prefer my QB to be more focused on winning football games.

  28. seabreezes51 says: May 23, 2014 5:18 PM

Doing nothing about it will allow the guy to do it again.

  29. abqhawk says: May 23, 2014 5:19 PM

Force an agreement for a cease and desist forever on all aspects of this and move on. This Riches guy is obviously mentally ill and after publicity so perhaps the threat of a mental evaluation would be prudent too.

  30. louiegrandie says: May 23, 2014 5:28 PM

The guy is already in federal prison for doing stuff like this. And people already suspect who sent the letter for him.

Except that a legal document requires you to verify that the facts alleged therein are true and correct to the best of your knowledge and if you actually know something is incorrect, it is sanctionable and illegal to do so.

It’s called “abuse of process” and “malicious prosecution” and it’s the law. Pretending to be someone else and then signing their name on a legal document is all kinds of illegal, bro.

  39. longsufferingkcfan says: May 23, 2014 6:35 PM

  40. bonniebengal says: May 23, 2014 6:35 PM

  41. simplec72 says: May 23, 2014 7:09 PM

Someone should file a lawsuit against him for impersonating Tim Tebow!

  42. qdog112 says: May 23, 2014 7:09 PM

Riches should get the same punishment Brett Farve got, since he sees himself in Johnny.

Let me see, Farve did instagram himself to a female, then went out and ruined the lady. Johnny should stand down , lest we be reminded.

No big deal. He’s a public figure who just got MORE free publicity. Let it go.

  43. picksixx says: May 23, 2014 8:25 PM

The guy is marketable. He’s going to get opportunities other draft picks don’t get, and he’s smart to take advantage of it. He might not get a second contract, and if he does, he will be banking a ton of off-field cash. Manning slaps his skyscraper forehead on anything that pays, and he’s not stupid, either. Johnny should stuff his pockets while he can. I would.

The only people that will benefit from Manziel suing are his lawyer, who will undoubtedly put 5 attorneys on the case at $500/hour to seek “justice”. Johnny is an ATM and his people would like to make a withdrawal.

I would be shocked if Florida goes after him criminally. People go to jail all the time here for false accusations and nothings happens to the accusers. Heck you can’t even fight it if you prove it was false. Florida is home of sovereign immunity. Government screws up …too bad lol.

I have read several stories today about this. The guy who wrote, filed this “lawsuit” is already in prison has been for a while and will be there for a long time. I have worked with this population. They are a very letiginous (sp)bunch. And they feed off the response. It feeds into their delusions and narcissism. They feed off the emotional response. And since they are already ‘doing time” threats of more time is basically meaningless. As is suing for $$ as they have none. And sadly the prison or state hospital (what ever correctional facility this person is at) has no legal ability to prevent his interaction with the court. He has a legal right to mail his “lawsuit”. The court will of course dismiss it, but the petitioner will get a free trip out of jail to the court, get to be the center of attention, portray himself as a victim and get a free ride back to prison, etc…..To those of us who work in the system, it is crazy making, but with out a doctor’s order and/or a court order to screen the mail there is little we can do. I did that to a patient who was sending threatening letters to the court and governor. For that I got assaulted with scalding water, 2nd degree burns and no consequences to the person who assaulted me.

If you clicked on the links listed in this story you would know this guy has no money and serious mental health issues. The only thing Manziel can get is more jail time from this guy.

  54. higheriqthanyou says: May 24, 2014 9:55 AM

Manziel, focused on everything except football.

  55. bcboncs says: May 26, 2014 1:38 PM

Man as a Browns fan I can already see the taunts coming but I can’t help but find it hilarious. Manziel is best off just laughing this out of the spotlight.
