Butt fumble jersey generates more than pocket change

It’s one of the most notorious moments in NFL history.  And a Jets fan now owns a piece of it.

According to Kristian Dyer of Yahoo Sports, Jake Hendrickson recently purchased the jersey worn by former Jets quarterback Mark Sanchez on November 22, 2012.

On that night, the Jets hosted the Patriots.  During that game, Sanchez ran into the rear end of former Jets guard Brandon Moore, sparking what will forever be known as the “Butt Fumble.”

The auction didn’t point out that the game-worn jersey came from the “Butt Fumble” game.  If it had, it would have perhaps gotten more attention before the bidding closed, and in turn it would have generated a higher winning bid.

Hendrickson wanted to be sure that the power of the Butt Fumble didn’t end up in the wrong hands.

“There’s no way I could let it get in the hands of an anti-fan or something of that manner to be shoved in our face,” Hendrickson said.  “The auction itself had like five days left on it before it closed so basically I set an alarm on my calendar to remind me an hour before so I could be at my computer.  I was prepared for an all-out bidding war.  There were a couple other people I was bidding against but it being the offseason I don’t think there were many people looking for football memorabilia so it didn’t go nearly as high as I had anticipated.”

The jersey will be framed and displayed by Hendrickson.  But for how long?

“Until we win a Super Bowl or I can get together enough money to put it on a rocket ship and shoot it to outer space because I don’t think it belongs on this planet anymore,” Hendrickson said.

That would definitely give new meaning to the term “space junk.”

    $820 was the winning bid.

“In the year 2525, some Sanchez space junk snags a satellite defense system and dooms us all.”

    End of song.

The butt fumble will live forever in infamy on YouTube

If Foles plays poorly without DeSean Jackson or if he gets injured, watch Mark Sanchez step up. While this may sound crazy after Foles’ great year in 2013, I bet Sanchez still sees himself as a starting caliber QB, who had bad luck with injury last year. He is probably determined to seize the opportunity if it arises.
He will forever be remembered for the butt fumble, but his ego is so big he probably doesn’t fixate on it like the media does.

I witnessed Sanchez outplay Roethlisberger in the 2010 AFC championship game. That was back when the Jets had a good team. Funny how that works.

this is funny…and if it wasn’t bad was the quickest scoop & score in nfl history…and it was against your hated rival…can’t make it up.

How much for Jim Marshall’s wrong way safety jersey?

  10. wayneflores says: May 24, 2014 3:58 PM

    He paid too much

  11. edelmanfanclub says: May 24, 2014 4:03 PM

Or Dan Orlovsky’s self safety jersey? Lions fans go!

Let me know when the bidding starts on Brandon Moore’s game worn pants. Then, glass case it like the Shroud of Turin so fans can try to imagine Sanchez’ face imprint.

The Butt Fumble is the greatest “fail” in the history of sports.

  14. thetruthcampaign says: May 24, 2014 4:37 PM

Sanchez’s legacy: Butt Fumble. That is all.

  15. dcapettini says: May 24, 2014 5:09 PM

Heck, I would have bought it for $820.

“Mark Sanchez…… LOL. As an Eagles fan, I’m ASHAMED this guy is on our team”

For a team that employed a dog killer, you’d think philly had a lot more to be ashamed of

  17. kuranda84 says: May 24, 2014 5:36 PM

Lol. Very cool of him. Jets fans crack me up. You guys do and say some pretty cool things.

  18. alamba78 says: May 24, 2014 5:48 PM

How did HE know it was the Butt Fumble jersey if other people didn’t???

  19. alamba78 says: May 24, 2014 5:52 PM

Hmmm, I guess the seller mentioned the date of the game, duh! This is pretty funny stuff. The kid sounds a little loopy himself. Shoot it to space? Who thinks like that? How about just simply burning it.

  20. kev86 says: May 24, 2014 6:30 PM

Jet Fan buying the butt fumble jersey is classic.

  21. screamingsheep69 says: May 24, 2014 6:43 PM

You know, if you would have put the price in your article, much better. But I had to click the link to the original Yahoo article to confirm the other comment of $820.

  22. raiders4ever says: May 24, 2014 6:53 PM

How much for the jersey and the headband Sanchez now wears…Mark is my hero..Brandon Moore

  23. jakeyfranky says: May 24, 2014 7:46 PM

Ha ha I said I would burn it if we won the superbowl

  24. keylimelight says: May 24, 2014 7:48 PM

$800 dollars for a shirt with questionable provenance?

I think the guy who paid $375 for the old Metrodome urinal will get more bang for his buck…at least he can install it in his back yard and make a righteous planter out of it.

  25. timpiker says: May 24, 2014 8:17 PM

Wasn’t there a scandal about this stuff not being authentic awhile back? How’s he know its legit? The brown stains?

  26. canetic says: May 24, 2014 8:44 PM

As a Dolphins fan I wish I would have known it was up for auction. I would have donated it to Fins to prominently display at all home Jets games.

  28. taintedsaints2009 says: May 24, 2014 10:07 PM

Rex Ryan has stated that the high selling price of this jersey indicates the jets are unstoppable Super Bowl contenders this year.

  29. simonator917 says: May 24, 2014 10:22 PM

He doesn’t have anything better with nearly one thousand dollars?

  30. manninghasnt1sincespygate says: May 24, 2014 10:42 PM

Oh the Jets…..the gift that keeps on giving.

  31. Andrew says: May 25, 2014 12:38 AM

A true Jets fan would burn and otherwise completely destroy this jersey

  32. mikelitoris1 says: May 25, 2014 1:01 AM

Damn, that jersey sure would’ve looked nice next to my Drew Stanton Jets jersey.

  33. yetimonster says: May 25, 2014 1:04 AM

    Awesome pic!

  34. thenyolive says: May 25, 2014 1:32 AM

I was born on Nov 22. Formerly a date associated with the assassination of a good president, now associated with the butt fumble. Thank you Mark Sanchez.

  35. onwisc0nsin says: May 25, 2014 2:31 AM

I would be less embarrassed about Sanchez and more about being a fan of the Eagles! Sanchez is there to be a backup.

  36. lostsok says: May 25, 2014 3:59 AM

With luck, the Jets will create similar memorabilia this season.

  37. 12hawksfan1976 says: May 25, 2014 4:17 AM

Just burn it in the parking lot at MetLife like other Jets fans do with Sanchez jerseys. Problem solved.

If the buyer waits until the Jets win the Super Bowl again, you’re talking hundreds of years from now.

  38. joeypickles says: May 25, 2014 8:52 AM

As a jets fan I understand why the guy can’t burn it… we don’t burn flags and the like for a reason too…

  39. smackingfools says: May 25, 2014 10:35 AM

I hope it really was a game worn. Just ask Eli how it works.

  40. bornahawker says: May 25, 2014 7:31 PM

Eli is only one fraudster, I bet you half of the so called “game jersey’s” are fakes. A fool and his money are soon parted.
