Despite recent tweets, Finley’s status hasn’t changed

AP

A pair of recent tweets from free-agent tight end Jermichael Finley created the impression that he’s closer to a return.

Awesome news!” he said, followed up “#IWillRiseAgain.”

He then tempered that with this:  “Minor SetBack 4 A Major #Comeback.”

According to Rob Demovsky of ESPN.com, the tweets don’t mean much.  As Demovsky explains it, “There has been no change in either his medical clearance or his contractual status with the Packers.”

Finley underwent neck surgery last season.  In late January, Finley told PFT Live that he expected to be cleared soon.  It hasn’t happened yet; hopefully, it will in time for him to play in 2014.

  1. Why does Jermichael tweet things like this all offseason? He always acts like huge announcement is about to made and than no status change at all.

  2. It seems clear the the Pack has moved on… do we really think T.T. would give Colt Lyerla a chance to make the roster if they really thought J. Finley had a real shot at returning…? Finley was always better in his own mind then he ever was on the field… and if the Packers would move on from Nick Collins, without a clear replacement, why wouldn’t they move on from him and his injury, when they at the very least have potential at his position… Go Pack Go!!!

  3. It’s not like he hit his wife or drove drunk or murdered anyone.

He loves life and if he wants to have fun in it with Twitter, why bash the man.

I hope he gets medical clearance and has a career year. Why should I or anyone else have so much hate for an athlete that has done nothing wrong but send out a few tweets?

Too many people take the term ‘fanatic’ too far. Enjoy sports as entertainment, not life.

    Oh no, I’m growing old!

  4. Twitter is the most narcissistic invention since the mirror. It is not a vehicle by which news is passed along. It is an opportunity for someone to say “Hey look at me! Don’t forget about me! Who’s more important than me?”

Enough. Get on the field or don’t. The Packers are stacked at TE. Somebody that actually performs on the field instead of in their own mind is going to come out of this training camp, and it’s about time.

  5. If the Packers have moved on like you say then why does he still have a locker with his name on it and his number 88 has not been reissued to anyone.

I think Finley will be given every chance to return if he wants to if he cleared medically. He unlike Collins does not have to tackle people so he has a lower risk of re-injury.

  6. Miami may also be in the mix for Jermichael’s services, as well. Joe Philbin was his Offensive Coordinator when the Packers won the Super Bowl and he did a good job of developing Finley into a decent NFL TE. The Dolphins have also kept some money up their sleeve.

  7. We all know that Packers team physician Pat McKenzie is too ultra conservative to ever clear Finley with an injury this high up the spine.

His only hope is to get checked by the physican of another team.

And let’s face it, the Packers have been giving Jmike chances to “YLOTTO” or take over the league for five years now. They’d probably be moving on anyway.

Ted was gonna take a TE high in the draft, but those two went right before our 2nd rounder, so we nabbed Davante Adams instead. Ah well.

  8. Remember watching this guy in training camp his rookie year, man he looked good. Never quite lived up to his potential, but when hes locked in (keeping the drops in check), he is one of the more dangerous pass catching tight ends in the league. Wouldn’t hurt to have him back if he is cleared as another weapon familiar with the offense and with A Rodg.

  9. Of course, the Packers did keep the names of all the “Owners” of the team, therefore leaving them liable for ANY pending legal actions!

  10. tallguyme says:

“If he can play, he’ll be playing for the Patriots.”

    ———————–

Yeah, the Pats are naturally attracted to TE’s that can’t stay healthy…oh, and those that like to murder people.

  11. I hope JMike retires. The injury is just too serious. One hit away from a life in a wheelchair. It’s avoidable and for his sake and his family’s sake I hope he calls it quits.. Felt the same way about Collins. And it’s beyond me how any Doctor could clear a player with such an injury. Good luck to you JMike and thanks for being a Packer, you always will be.

  12. I gotta say, as a Bears fan this guy always terrified me. So much talent and ability, and while his ego did get in the way, he was a beast that had to be accounted for in the red zone. I wish him the best of luck, and hope he ends up somewhere other than GB.

  13. welcome to MN…where you will be paired with Kyle Rudolph, former teammate Jennings, Cordarelle “All Day” Patterson & of course Adrian “All Day” Peterson…would be unstoppable with Norv Turner running thangz…

  14. Jermichael is a tough guy who enjoys the game and the limelight but doesn’t have a lot of common sense when it comes to his personal safety. I believe he was actually injured on a prior sideline play where he was slow to get up. Instead of getting checked out, he didn’t listen to his body and bam, almost lost his life on a routine tackle. Now he should listen to his son, hang it up, collect the $10M insurance and move on with his life.

  15. Seeing as how the Packers already have six or seven tight ends on the roster, including Quarless, a draft pick, two undrafted free agents (including Lyeria who may be the most talented of the bunch), Finley is done in Green Bay, if not in the league.

  16. “Packer fans are the worst in the league! You guys are pathetic”
    —-
Your team could hope to be as pathetic. With a global fan base and 13 NFL titles and Super Bowls. Ya, we’re pathetic.(snicker). Worst in the league(snicker).
We’re so pathetic that there are 70K+ waiting to buy season tickets for a game.
As Frasier Crane once said, “what is the color of the sky in your world?”

  17. “Yeah, the Pats are naturally attracted to TE’s that can’t stay healthy…oh, and those that like to murder people.”
that is the most stupid thing I have read in awhile. If they knew he was a murderer when he was on the team(still needs to be proven in court) there is no way they keep him around.you can be anti Pats but at least be truthful.

  18. Finley to the Giants yea right. Hmmm ….Let me think catching passes from Rodgers or Eli sounds like a real tough choice for him. He already said he wants to return to GB.

  19. If he plays again, and I think that’s a big if, he’d primarily be used as a red zone target. Having that neck injury, not to mention his concussions, I think coaches will be reluctant to throw anything to him over the middle. I would be at least. He tends to drop his head, safeties do the same, and no one wants to call the play that could paralyze a guy. The way his last two injuries shook his family, I kinda wish he would swallow his pride and retire. It’s not worth it J Fin.

  20. This is all for show. He took out a big insurance policy and IMO he and the Packers are making it appear they are doing everything to get him back on the field. He will not be cleared this year, collect and be on his way to a happy retirement. Otherwise you would have to think he has no idea where his recovery was and Seattle (team with a GM that is very friendly with the Packers) brought him in not consulting anyone. Its all for insurance payout.

  21. Don’t know why Finley is so eager to get back. If never cleared to play again he gets to cash in a $10 million dollar tax free insurance policy he had taken out on himself before the injury. He has 2 kids plus another one on the way I think. If I were in his shoes I would be happy with the insurance payout plus what I already earned and enjoy being able to play with my kids without being in a wheelchair.

  22. No bashing, nothing personal here.
Jermichael should hang it up for this coming season and heal. Give it a go in 2015.
Just count your blessings and be a fan this year.
Do it for your family. Paralysis is permanent. You have millions and hopefully you didn’t squander it.
