“Omaha” will migrate to Michigan

staffordsnow AP

Lions quarterback Matthew Stafford may not yet play like Peyton Manning.  But Stafford will soon sound like him.

As recently explained by Dave Birkett of the Detroit Free Press, the arrival of former Manning coaches Jim Caldwell and Jim Bob Cooter means Manning’s late-career catch phrase is coming to Michigan.

Omaha.

“It’s been around a long time,” veteran backup Dan Orlovsky said, via Birkett.  “I think different teams use it in different capacities.  I’ve used it before in a different way.  That’s part of it, too, is re-wiring your brain for what it means.”

For running back Reggie Bush, extensive wiring already is in place from the time he spent with the Saints.

“The new system, like I said, I played in the system five years in New Orleans so all the terminology’s pretty much the same to me,” Bush said. “We definitely have what it takes to be an explosive offense, just as we were last year. Just got to clean up doing the little things right and we’ll be OK.”

They could be better than OK.  They could be playing in January, when the maximum audience will hear Stafford impersonating Peyton.

After he uses it, he will then procede to throw the ball to the other team as usual

I like the idea of a “new” system, so at least the team has identified that they have to do things differently. I could care less what Stafford wants to say if it can help him take his game to the next level. Something needs to be done to get this team on track where it needs to be. Any “new” ideas are at least a shot to accomplish that.

“Omaha” moves around a lot. But no one ever moves to Omaha.

Omaha gets around….. Like a record.

    Two things stand out:

    (1) Omaha Steaks. Mmmmm.

    (2) Jim Bob Cooter. Wasn’t he on Dukes of Hazzard?

Omaha Steaks are one of the biggest scams ever. They dish out overpriced, frozen meat, and hound you like a starving debt collector.

Omaha steaks are good though :)

Jim Bob Cooter, has to be one of the best names in pro sports. Never seen the guy, but guessing, he was born in WV, KY, or Tenn.

I’m not sure I’ve had that companies steaks. I drool over the thought of a good steak and figured folks in Nebraska would know a good steer when they saw one :)

Seattle will kick it’s ass there too. And in other somewhat related news, the New York Mets have hired Billy Bob Scrotum to be their next 3rd base coach.

Jim Bob Cooter was, I believe; a backup walk-on QB in the SEC….LSU?

What stafford will really being saying: OMAHGOD…then panic and throw it to the other team

  13. scw1993 says: May 26, 2014 12:10 AM

I wouldn’t want Stafford to copy manning in any way, especially in a superbowl. Choke is the word, not omaha-ha-ha.

  14. johnelwayishorsefaced says: May 26, 2014 12:15 AM

You just wanted to say Jim Bob Cooter. There was also speculation that we were going to get Bill Lazor and then we would have had the most hardcore assistant coaching staff ever

I had a 6 month consulting gig in Omaha years ago. Nearly died of boredom

    C’mon, its in a Billy Joel song…

If “Omaha” meant Nebraska’s tradition of national championships infiltrating Detroit’s front office, I’d be all for it. Unfortunately, the bumbling Lions will probably misinterpret it and insist that Matthew Stafford imitate the throwing style of Jamaal Lord.

  19. steves11 says: May 26, 2014 2:11 AM

Omaha is one of those places that you move “from”, not “to”.

  20. johnnycash19 says: May 26, 2014 2:23 AM

If Omaha means Matthew can improve his accuracy and lower his INT’s, I’m all for it

  21. bobusch1 says: May 26, 2014 2:41 AM

I don’t care if Jim Bob was born in another Planet, just fix Stafford and make him the elite qb that he can be, he has all the tools, just fine tune him and he could be one of the best, he doesn’t need alot because he has all the tools, just fine tune him Jim Bob

Detroit has had a powerful offense for several years now. Making it slightly more powerful is not going to get them into the playoffs, they need defense to make it to the playoffs.

We do, and our frozen steaks are better than anything you’ll get fresh in California.

Stafford may not play like Manning YET?

That implies it could or is even likely to happen with time.

  31. deafcone says: May 26, 2014 10:50 AM

    Lions version will be “INCOMING”

  32. Straight Cash Homie says: May 26, 2014 10:54 AM

I’m surprised some company hasn’t tried to pay Peyton some serious dollars to use their name instead of Omaha or in this case Stafford using Michigan. Instead of Omaha they could use Nike, Burger King, Chevy, Gatorade, etc. and reap the sponsorship dollars. I think agents phones are ringing already.

  33. easyeddie says: May 26, 2014 11:15 AM

Stafford will put up some massive numbers this season – bank on it.

  34. whatjusthapped says: May 26, 2014 11:47 AM

Stafford is the most overrated offensive player (real talent, less than adequate results) in the NFL but it does balance out since the Lions have the most overrated defensive player in Suh.

  35. ivanpavlov0000 says: May 27, 2014 4:47 PM

Reggie Bush is right. The Lions have what it takes to be an explosive offense, and also had it last year. Unfortunately, he put the ball on the ground so often that it didn’t matter.

Reggie is a spark plug for sure, but if he doesn’t learn how to hang onto the ball he should get cut.
