With teams able to field rosters of 90, and bring many more guys in for tryouts, there’s some inevitable roster-shuffling.
The Chiefs are keeping it fresh, signing tryout tackle Ryan McKee from this weekend’s rookie minicamp, according to Randy Covitz of the Kansas City Star. To make room for him on the roster, they released tackle Chandler Burden.
The transaction isn’t that interesting in and of itself, as teams are churning the bottoms of the rosters all over the league.
Although combined with other such moves, it’s almost like twist on the old Michael Irvin reality show “4th and Long,” in which the winner got a camp invite from the Cowboys.
That was Jesse Holley’s ticket to the NFL, and he at least had a few memorable moments. Whether McKee ever gets that much in the league remains to be seen.
If nothing else, the golden ticket element of the tryouts keeps the competition level up during an otherwise unspectacular minicamp, and if that keeps the players expected to win roster spots paying closer attention, maybe it’s worth it.
But when this becomes a staple of somebody’s summer football programming, I still expect a cut.
