Redskins defensive tackle Barry Cofield isn’t taking part in the team’s organized team activities this week after having sports hernia surgery.

Coach Jay Gruden said “it wasn’t too long ago” that Cofield had the surgery, although Cofield himself opted not to reveal any details about his condition. Gruden said that the team is “hoping” to have Cofield at full speed by the start of camp, however, and Cofield said “for sure” when asked if he’d be back on the field this summer.

“I’m running pretty hard now,” Cofield said, via the Washington Post. “I feel good.”

Cofield has started every Redskins game over the last three seasons and has been a steady source of interior pass rush since coming to Washington. His work against the run hasn’t been nearly as impressive, but none of the other options at tackle for the Redskins offer the team nearly as much as Cofield. That makes it welcome news in Washington that he should be healthy and ready to go come late July.
