Tight end Colt Lyerla is on the field and practicing with the Packers, ending a period away from the field that began when he was kicked off the Oregon football team last year.

Lyerla’s departure from the team, subsequent arrest on drug charges and assorted other issues from his college days led to Lyerla going undrafted despite the kind of talent that is usually off the board in the first two days. The Packers decided to bring Lyerla on board in hopes that he’s able to find the right track and the tight end says he thinks that can happen.

“Once you’ve been to the bottom, you see what you need to do as a person and the changes you need to make,” Lyerla said, via the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. “I think that’s going to help me become a better person in the locker room. I feel like I have a new home. I was kind of lost for a little while, but being here and being accepted here is truly great.”

Lyerla said that football is his only focus right now and the Packers are working with him to be more trusting of those around him in the locker room after that was a problem for Lyerla at Oregon. Predicting whether things will wind up falling into place for Lyerla is impossible, but there would seem to be worse places for him to try than with the stable leadership and high-level quarterback play they have in place in Green Bay.
