Alshon Jeffery: Brandon Marshall and I are the NFL’s Top 2 receivers

Alshon Jeffery, Brandon Marshall AP

Bears receiver Alshon Jeffery says he and Brandon Marshall are the best pair of receivers in football.

“I’m not the type of person that brags a lot about anything, but I feel that last year, what we did, we were at the top of the list as the two best receivers,” Jeffery told Sporting News. “But that was last year. This year we have to set our goal and try our best to do the same thing we did last year, if not better.”

Jeffery may not want to brag, but he doesn’t hesitate to say that he and Marshall have set very high goals for themselves.

“We motivate each other,” Jeffery said. “We compete against each other and we’ve got the same goals. We both want to win the Super Bowl and we want greatness.”

With Marshall now signed for the next four years, locking up Jeffery may be the Bears’ biggest offseason priority next year. The Bears would love to have both Marshall and Jeffery in Chicago as a great pair of receivers playing together for years to come.

Roddy White & Julio Jones are too busy grieving right now to respond to that statement. Stop gun violence, but not Richard Martinez style.

  2. jhein23 says: Jun 1, 2014 1:51 PM

Top duo yes. No way are they the 2 best receivers in the NFL. Calvin Johnson is better than both, and I could list 10 guys who are better than Alshon Jeffrey for sure.

  3. emoney826 says: Jun 1, 2014 1:52 PM

Where were you two in the biggest and most important moment of the season? They’re both a good tandem but aren’t the best pair in the nfl. They weren’t the #1 passing offense so they can’t be called the best.

  4. rcali says: Jun 1, 2014 1:53 PM

I think what he meant to say was “Dream Team!”

  5. folkcrusader says: Jun 1, 2014 1:54 PM

Although both he and Marshall had excellent seasons, when your team goes 8-8 in a terribad division and misses the playoffs you do not get to claim the “best” title. Sorry young grasshopper.

A HEALTHY Julio Jones and Roddy White are the best tandem in NFL. Cannot argue that Marshal and Jeffrey arent a good duo, but not #1

  21. isphet71 says: Jun 1, 2014 2:07 PM

It’s a close race between Jeffrey/Marshall and White/Jones in Atlanta for best duo. If White was 2 years younger, I might go with White/Jones, but for now I have to agree with Jeffrey that he and Marshall are tops.

Not that there’s an award for “Best receiver duo” in the NFL at the end of the year. Maybe you should keep your eyes on the one prize that matters instead of comparing yourself to others…

  22. amazingguy101 says: Jun 1, 2014 2:11 PM

Best duo was back when Fitzgerald and Bolden were on same team or Marvin Harrison and Reggie Wayne duo

  23. metalhead65 says: Jun 1, 2014 2:13 PM

so it is their fault the bears finished 8-8? were they suppose to play defense to? hardly their fault that because of injuries the bears were signing guys off the street every week to play defense and could not stop anybody. should be a different story this year and if they continue their play they have a real shot at the playoffs and once in look out!

  32. jdubs82 says: Jun 1, 2014 2:19 PM

    @emoney826
Incorrect, they were in fact the number 1 WR pair in football… the #1 passing offense includes all facets of the passing game, TEs, RBs, slot WRs.. but on pure X and Y WRs, Jeffery and Marshall was statistically the best duo in football.

  33. dabubble says: Jun 1, 2014 2:19 PM

You need a quarterback that doesn’t look at the opposition as his teammates as well dummies…duh Bears.

  35. coopville says: Jun 1, 2014 2:20 PM

Easily the best WR tandem in the NFL.

To all the incredibly stupid geniuses on here, your record is indicative of the team not the tandem. Also, having the #1 passing offense has a lot to do with more than just the WRs. QB, O line and OC have a lot to do with that.

    Men lie, women lie…NUMBERS DON’T!

  36. shinedown37 says: Jun 1, 2014 2:20 PM

  37. jdubs82 says: Jun 1, 2014 2:21 PM

So Calvin Johnson and Larry Fitzgerald (and Dez Bryant) all suck.. since apparently “best WR” = “WR who has won the most superbowls” ?

  38. larryboodry says: Jun 1, 2014 2:23 PM

Here’s the deal…I would rate Marshall and Jeffery ahead of White and Jones only because Marshall is slightly better than White, and because Jeffery and Jones have each only had one stud season so far.

And if my WR tandem didn’t feel they’re the best, folks would question that, too.

And the only people bashing Jay anymore are haters/bitter Broncos fans who basically don’t like the Bears anyway, so whatever floats your boat.

Calvin Johnson alone isn’t a duo either. People need to stay on topic.

  46. bearshaterseverywhere says: Jun 1, 2014 2:36 PM

    Obviously.

Cobb/Nelson are not even close to Alshon and Brandon. Keep dreaming Packers and enjoy Rodgers.

Megatron needs someone much better than Tate to be considered. Tate isn’t a top 25 receiver.

The Vikings have Cordell Patterson and he isn’t even as good as Tate.

Julio and Roddy are definitely the only true comparison.

The Broncos spread the ball to 5 different players evenly, they’re beyond the best tandem, they are the best offense and the Bears are the 2nd best…..facts!

I mean yes, Thomas and Decker very well could have been the best last year. Thomas was second in the league with 14 TD catches and Decker, tied for 8th, had 11. Compare that to Marshall’s 12 and Jeffery’s 7. Yes, Manning was behind center, but I never seen him come close to 55, even with Marvin Harrison and Reggie Wayne.

  50. jcbadger34 says: Jun 1, 2014 2:44 PM

Ahhhh, the off-season. The time when the Vikings, Bears, Lions, and all their fans get to pretend they’re great.

I love how when comparing top duos some of you can’t understand what a duo is. It’s not one receiver say Calvin or AJ green, it’s a pair. For as great as everyone says Calvin is the last 3 years he’s averaged one more catch and one more td then Marshall. Marshall is one of the most underrated wr out there, all he does is produce.

Just not as good as Cobb/Nelson or White/Jones or Johnson/Tate, maybe not even as good as Jonnson/Hopkins. It’s great how bad teams can imagine they’re good in the offseason, everybody deserves to dream I guess.

  74. beerbratscheese says: Jun 1, 2014 4:04 PM

As a Packers fan, I give props to these two. Good to see Marshall turn his life around and Jeffery certainly emerged as an elite WR too. Under other circumstances, I wouldn’t mind them on the Packers’ roster.

Fortunately, Nelson and Cobb are pretty darned good in their own right. Probably not on the level of Marshall and Jeffery, but I won’t kick them off the roster. Boykin is sure handed and the team drafted some potentially starting-caliber WRs. I’ll give the Bears nod for the best WR duo, but the Packers have the better overall offense.

  75. suckit619 says: Jun 1, 2014 4:06 PM

There’s no debating they’re the best duo. Maybe not the WR corps but definitely the best duo. Packer fans are delusional if they think Cobb and Nelson are better. They just have a better qb throwing to them. Roddy and Julio are the only tandem that have an argument but they can’t stay healthy.

Brandon Marshall is the most overrated player in the NFL. Has he played one playoff snap? I’m pretty sure not. Why? Because for all his catches, he is about as dangerous as a Cabbage Patch Kid. He’s all stats, no bite. And worse, he cries if he doesn’t get his touches, dragging his team down on the way to his own false acclaim.

There’s a reason he’s putting up another batch of false numbers for his third NFL team.

Clearly it’s warranted, if you had true football intelligence and look past the ignorant thinking of an 8-8 record, you would maybe slow down and not sound like such a clown.

The stats down lie. In 2013 Brandon and Alshon were the VERY best WR tandem. The Bears had the 2nd best scoring offense in the NFL and that includes Forte and Bennett, is the 2nd FACT. They also had an entire 2nd string defense except for Jennings, Peppers and McClellin. The safeties got all the blame. You and all the delusional Lions fans on this article are just scared and it shows with your ridiculous comments on here.

  100. scrotiemcb says: Jun 1, 2014 8:05 PM

I’m sorry the truth hurts, larry. But the guy doesn’t win. Never has. Never will.

As far as I can see, the average PFT commenter is as duped as you are when it comes to the NFL’s most overrated player.

He’s a possession receiver. The only way he takes the top off a defense is if there is a blown coverage. The only way he gains meaningful YAC is bad tackling. The only reason he remains relevant is because he’s back with his lazy QB, who’d rather force a ball into coverage than read a D. I wish they kept a stat for most targets intercepted, because Marshall would win that one running away.

    bearshaterseverywhere says: Jun 1, 2014 7:57 PM

This is an extremely bad omen for Da Bears. When players on an 8-8 team think they are the best in the NFL after an 8-8 season, such delusions of self-grandeur often ruin their team for the coming season and seasons to come.

    __________________________________

Cobb and Nelson? Is that the answer to who will have the most games missed, neither one of those guys can be counted on for a whole season. And to put Fitz in a top 5 means you haven’t watched the cardinals since Warner retired.

Funniest thing I’ve ever heard. Guys like Alshon are a dime a dozen.

Bears fan here. Now, I’m going to sound like a homer at first, but read the whole comment:

All of you saying “they went 8-8″ and “The Eagles beat them 54-11″ and “Where were you against the Packers” need to realize something: These guys don’t play defense. The Bears Defense lost AT LEAST 3 games for them last year. They were last in the league and gave up a franchise record amount of rushing yards. apposing RB’s averaged 5.3 YPC. 5.3 YPC!!!

If the Bears defense had been half as good as Marshall and Jeffery’s offense, the Bears were playoff bound.

I’m not agreeing that Marshall an Jeffery are the best 2 receivers in football, and I don’t think that’s the way Alshon meant it. He meant they were the best duo. And for the 2013 season, the numbers back that up pretty well.

With that said, 2013 was only one season. They may in fact be the best duo, but they have to keep it up for more than one season to earn that title.

    Bear Down!!

    Tate better than Jeffery……… BWAHAHAHAHAHAHA

  114. imsmarterthanyou says: Jun 2, 2014 12:02 AM

I read through the first, say twenty or so comments. It’s clear that the majority of people commenting were fooled by the title of this post, which was worded to get more people to read it.

Last year, which is what Jeffery was talking about, they were the best DUO. No one is claiming, that either is the single best receiver in the league. He even made reference to it being last year.

Also, this constant reference to their 8-8 season…That was historically the worst D in Chicago Bears’ history. They were also the #2 scoring offense in the NFL behind Denver. They went 8-8 because of Jeffery and Marshall (amongst others like Forte and Bennett on offense).

Lastly…when arguing, use facts. Adds some legitimacy to what you’re saying rather than, just blurting out unintelligible blabber that sounds more like a third grader in a yeah huh/nah uh argument.

Numbers don’t lie. Look at theirs, compare to other duos in the league, and tell us all who was #1 last year.

    Have a great summer.

Arguing about a tandem is pretty silly. All it tells me is that you have a qb who cant get through all his progressions. If qb’s like Rodgers and Manning keyed on just 2 guys they could easily put up stats like that with their 2 best receivers. They however include at 4 different receivers which good qb’s do and explot a defense.

    —————————-
    2013-14 stats
    Brandon Marshall – 100 Rec
    Alshon Jeffery – 89 Rec
    Matt Forte – 74 Rec
    Martellus Bennett – 65 Rec
    Earl Bennet – 32 Rec

Can’t get through progressions you say? Again, back with facts…otherwise you end up looking like you do…

  117. 1cubfan1 says: Jun 2, 2014 12:04 PM

@imsmarterthanyou… That’s completely correct… numbers don’t lie! That’s 4 different offensive players with 65 or more receptions! And if I’m not mistaken, Forte had over 2000 yds combined, (1300+ yds rushing/700+ yds receiving) the only NFL back to do so last season! I believe that’s 5 offensive players with 360 receptions combined, or 328 receptions for their top 4. “A Q/B who can’t get through all his progressions”… show me 4 or 5 offensive players, (on the same team) that put up better numbers last seasons! Heck, show me 2 who had more than 189 receptions (Marshall=100/Jeffrey=89) last season combined!

  118. 1cubfan1 says: Jun 2, 2014 12:19 PM

@imsmarterthanyou… I hear ya… numbers don’t lie! It’s just a bunch of “smack talk”, that’s all! They can’t back up their claims with facts/numbers because there is no better facts/numbers out there! Face it Bear haters… Alshon & Brandon were the best receiving duo in the league last season!

  119. bearshaterseverywhere says: Jun 2, 2014 1:15 PM

Lions fans are just pissed cause Marshall and Jeffery together last year got more attention then Calvin. Calvin is the best single receiver in the league and Alshon and Marshall are stealing his thunder. Which in turn makes Lions fans intimidated and scared, so they troll like clowns!

  120. favrewho says: Jun 2, 2014 2:17 PM

As a Packer fan, I absolutely think that Marshall and Alshon are the best WR duo in the league. The numbers don’t lie. Plus, Jefferey is young. Put aside his impressive stats from last year and watch some highlights. A few of the catches he made last season could only be made by a handful of guys in the NFL. And he is young.

Now- Bears fans, before you misinterpret what I’m saying here, let’s take 1 major fact into consideration: The HIGHEST paid QB in base salary in 2014 will be Jay Cutler at $17.5M. That is a TON of money for a guy who has only thrown over 4,000 yards 1 time, averages 26TDs and 18INTs per year. That is a crippling number towards your cap that limits the ability to rebuild your garbage defense.

Yes, the Bears offense was good last year. Real good. But they put up better numbers with McCown than Cutler. They couldn’t win the division in a year where Rodgers missed HALF the season and GB had 4 different starting QBs. The Bears D didn’t get better in the offseason, but the truckloads of cash they threw at Cutler ensures mediocrity at the QB spot for the next few years.

The 15-1 Packers from a few years ago put up more points and yards than all but a handful of NFL teams in history. And they were OUTGAINED by their opponents and tanked in the playoffs. You’re not going anywhere in the NFL if your defense SUCKS. The Bears defense sucks, and (even though I think GB overpaid for him) is weakened without Peppers.

Marshall and Jeffery are good. But the Bears aren’t going anywhere if their defense can’t get their stuff together.

  121. bearshaterseverywhere says: Jun 2, 2014 4:57 PM

Dumped M. Wright and consistently declining Julius Peppers.

Added: Lamar Houston, Willy Young, Izzy idonje and Jared Allen.

Kyle Fuller, Ryan Mundy, Brock Vereen in the secondary

But the Bears didn’t improve on Defense…….L0L!

  122. najb29najb29 says: Jun 2, 2014 7:34 PM

Funny how anyone trys to compare any reciever to Megatron. Marshall may have close stats yet CJ is always doubled and often tripled. Tate and Ebron should off set this dramatically this year. No and I mean no one is doubled /Tripled like CJ, check the tapes !!!

  123. schafler says: Jun 2, 2014 8:17 PM

The best receiving tandem in the NFL is Demaryius Thomas and Julius Thomas…..if you want to allow a TE to be included in this conversation. If Marshall and Jeffrey had Manning as their QB then who knows what kind of numbers they could put up. There are a lot of good WR tandems but I have to agree that Marshall and Jeffrey are the two best WR’s but not necessarily the best receiving tandems.

  124. schafler says: Jun 2, 2014 8:31 PM

Hey 1cubfan1 get your figures right before you start telling people that Forte was the only RB to go for over 2,000 total yards last season. He didn’t make it, he finished with 1,339 & 594 and that equals 1,934 total yards. Only L. McCoy had over 2.000 total yards.

I like the Bears but Bear fans have to learn how to add first. Their offense was exciting last year but their Defense sucked…..let’s see if they’re going to be any better this year. Just because they picked up a few players it doesn’t mean they’re going to play better….you should know that. The Packers are still going to be the team to beat going into the regular season. Good luck though because whoever wins your division is still going to have to go through the NFC West.

  125. parhley says: Jun 2, 2014 11:23 PM

I don’t see how people are commenting stupidly and arguing over whose the best WR duo. It is Jeffrey and Marshall period. No discussion. With a bum QB and a backup QB, they still caught every damn thing. The numbers don’t lie. At all. No one expected my boy to be this good, this soon. Yes we at South Carolina knew he’d be this good, wasn’t a question, we seen the greatness for three years. This aint surpassing. Nobody wanna give Jeffrey credit, but what has Julio Jones done compared to Jeffrey, he is quicker and that’s it. But as far as catching everything in sight? No question Jeffrey is better. To me, Johnson, Johnson, Marshall, Gordon, and AJ Green are only better than Jeffrey, oh and Fitzgerald. But Julio, nah brush. Dez? nah brush, if Jeffrey played in Dallas they’d cut Dez, and the Green Bay fans talking about Cobb/ Nelson? really? I mean for real? isn is so laughable, Jeffrey is a behemoth and so is Marshall. Hate it but we love it…I’ma panthers fan but I’mma ride for my SC players. What?!!!!!!!

  126. 1cubfan1 says: Jun 3, 2014 12:28 PM

@schafler… I agree, the Denver duo (W/R Demaryius Thomas & Julius Thomas T/E) was definitely one of the BETTER receiving tandems in the league last season, however, they were definitely not the BEST. Once again, facts & numbers don’t lie…

    Demaryius Thomas = 92rec / 1430yds / 14tds
    Julius Thomas = 65rec / 788yds / 12tds
    (Combined Totals = 157rec / 2218yds / 26tds)

    Brandon Marshall = 100rec / 1295yds / 12tds
    Alshon Jeffrey = 89rec / 1421yds / 7tds
    (Combined Totals = 189rec/ 2716yds / 19tds)

As you can see… the Bears duo had more receptions (32) and more yards (498). Yes, the Denver duo did have more touchdowns (7), I give you that. However, I don’t believe 7 touchdowns outweigh 32 receptions and 498 yards! You said it yourself… “If Marshall and Jeffrey had Manning as their QB who knows what kind of numbers they could put up.” I agree with you 100%, who knows what kind of numbers could’ve been put up had Manning been their QB… I bet Manning would’ve thrown more than 55 touchdowns, that’s for sure!

I’ll say it again… facts & numbers don’t lie! The Chicago Bears had the BEST receiving tandem in all the NFL last season… no doubt about it! Brandon Marshall & Alshon Jeffrey = the BEST! GO BEARS!

  127. packfanaj12 says: Jun 4, 2014 10:01 AM

They might be, but they are stuck on the Bears… so as good as they are… they will have issues getting a ring with Cutler.
