Report: Saints reach a deal with Jonathan Goodwin

Jonathan Goodwin appears set to return to the Saints.

The 35-year-old center, who played for New Orleans from 2006 through 2010, has reached a deal with the Saints, Mike Triplett of ESPN.com reported Monday. The contract is expected to be finalized on Tuesday, per ESPN.

Goodwin (6-3, 318) figures to push second-year pro Tim Lelito for the starting job in the middle of the Saints’ line.

Goodwin had been the 49ers’ starting center for the last three seasons. He has made 86 consecutive regular season starts dating back to 2008.

    Good player. Great career.

Solid pickup. Wish the Niners would have resigned for depth.

This guy is washed up. If he starts ahead of Lelito the Saints are going to have serious problems.

Goodwin’s being signed to compete for the starting spot, but he won’t oust Lelito, he’ll be the back up.

The Saints are my surprise team set to take a step back in 2014. I don’t like how Brees threw the ball the end of last year, their off season pickups or their draft.

Wow! Your surprise pick! Now, nobody in NOLA will be able to seep. Gnashing of teeth has begun.

Thanks for bringing your leadership, vet savvy, experience and stability to the niners O-Line. Great player, quiet presence who helped contribute to the success since he joined the niners. A shame that we can’t afford to pay everyone with so many contracts coming up. Best of luck in going to another solid team down south.

As a Niners fan, I’m glad to see him go to a roster that can contend. He’s been a great player over the past few years, and while I understand our need to go young, I was sorry to see him go. Class act on the field, always quietly doing his job.
