Urlacher is a viable option for the Cowboys

The Cowboys are interested in linebacker Brian Urlacher.  Unless they aren’t.

Unless they are.

Per a source with knowledge of the situation, Urlacher is a viable option for the Cowboys, who are trying to replace middle linebacker Sean Lee.  Whether Urlacher progresses from viable option to member of the team depends on whether the younger players pegged to replace Lee step up, including Anthony Hitchens and DeVonte Holloman.

Urlacher, who retired last year in lieu of taking only $2 million to stay with the Bears, has stayed in shape and has some interest in joining the Cowboys.  For now, many dominoes must fall before Urlacher is chasing around the likes of LeSean McCoy and RGIII.  But it’s not as much of a long shot as it’s being portrayed.

And that could be the best way for the Cowboys to get the youngsters to step up.  If they don’t, a potential Hall of Fame could be coming to town to show them how it’s done.

So to clear things up, the cowboys aren’t interested in 54 unless they are cut they aren’t saying they aren’t unless of course they are?

  14. v2787 says: Jun 2, 2014 2:03 PM

This would be a huge mistake. Urlacher was already slowing way down when he retired. He’s not going to be any faster or better now.

  18. keepongronking says: Jun 2, 2014 2:08 PM

Urlacher shouldnt tarnish his legacy by coming back to a horrible cowboys team and franchise

  19. obsession55 says: Jun 2, 2014 2:08 PM

might as well sign Ed Reed too! All Dallas cares about are “big names”, not production on the field

  27. politicallyincorrect says: Jun 2, 2014 2:31 PM

I realize a payday is a payday.. but having to resort to playing for the Cowgirls would be insulting and sad to see for such a great player

  28. jgedgar70 says: Jun 2, 2014 2:31 PM

So what will Dallas do after Urlacher suffers a season-ending injury during game 3? How ’bout them Cowboys!

  29. sowcrates says: Jun 2, 2014 2:32 PM

“Urlacher, who retired last year in lieu of taking only $2 million to stay with the Bears”

It may have only been $2 million, but it was 2 more than any other team in the NFL offered him, which should tell you something. Love him as a player, but that fact didn’t seem to cross his mind last year when he was acting like the Bears insulted him. They were willing to pay him way more than the market was willing to…which was nothing.

  30. bassplucker says: Jun 2, 2014 2:34 PM

What cracks me up how it is constantly spun that Urlacher was “low-balled” by the Bears at $2M, even after no other team came forward with an offer of even that much.

  31. corduroy88 says: Jun 2, 2014 2:36 PM

POTENTIAL hall of famer?????? Urlacher’s a lock if ever there was one. As a Packer fan, it doesn’t even hurt to say that.

  34. bricktop02 says: Jun 2, 2014 2:47 PM

So is the chair I’m sitting. Both move equally well at this point in their exisistences.

  36. schmokes says: Jun 2, 2014 2:52 PM

What better way to fill the hole left by your young injury prone player than to get an old injury prone player.

  37. racerx1225 says: Jun 2, 2014 2:53 PM

I can see Oakland trading Kevin Burnett to Dallas for a draft pick next year. He played really well last year.

  38. jfoley1074 says: Jun 2, 2014 3:00 PM

Funny that so many Dallas fans I’ve been talking to on Google are excited about this. I’d be worried.

  39. dbones641 says: Jun 2, 2014 3:13 PM

I don’t get all the negative feedback on this. We have a rookie 4th round pick set to be starting at one of the most difficult positions in the NFL.

What better way than to get him some confidence than to bring in one of the best Linebackers in NFL history to mentor him and fill the void with whatever he’s got left.

As a boys fan, I like this a lot and really hope this is a serious possibility and not just media hype.

  40. geniusesq says: Jun 2, 2014 3:15 PM

Sign Brett Favre, Ladanian Tomlinson & T.O. Might as well go all the way over……the hill.

  41. joemontanawasthegreatest says: Jun 2, 2014 3:16 PM

    This will not end well

  42. icup89 says: Jun 2, 2014 3:22 PM

    Oh Jerry

  43. jintsfan says: Jun 2, 2014 3:24 PM

Hitchens was projected as a 7th rnder-priority FA; a LB w/ no instincts and no coverage ability (albeit of high character) but still better option than Urlacher

  44. bassplucker says: Jun 2, 2014 3:25 PM

In many of his media appearances last year, Urlacher came off as a guy who was very bitter towards the Bears in particular, but also pretty much done with the NFL in general. Unless his baby mama(s) have already drained him dry, I would be extremely surprised if he signs another contract, whether with the Cowboys or anybody else.

  45. maddog111 says: Jun 2, 2014 3:32 PM

I actually think it makes more sense for the Cowboys than it does for Urlacher. Who knows, maybe he’s only in it for the check, but i’d think the only way he’d even consider coming back is if it’s for a definitely SB contender, not a team that will be lucky to go 500 this year.

  46. burgandy2260 says: Jun 2, 2014 3:45 PM

A lot of negatives and jokes as a response here but this defense is something he could walk right back into. Let alone help the younger guys behind him. The guy played great for us for all those years and I’d hate to see him in a pitiful cowboys uni but he’d be a helpful fit!

  47. muencht says: Jun 2, 2014 3:50 PM

Brian Urlacher comeback? I hope he has the sense not to do this. He has said over-and-over NO. The Bears organization knew his career was over but treated him badly. As someone said, he would have played for less $$. It wasn’t money, it was a lack of respect by the Bears.

I think Urlacher knows he is done. He has nothing to prove. He was one of the best LBs ever, up there with LT, Ray Lewis, Butkus, and my favorite Mike Singletary (as a player not a coach)!

  48. MostlyRight says: Jun 2, 2014 3:53 PM

Cardinals need a replacement for D. Washington and unlike the Cowboys actually have a shot at the Super Bowl. Go there.

  49. starfan79 says: Jun 2, 2014 4:24 PM

I think he would be a good fit for a or two downs a series, It would put a player on the field to make the defensive calls and he knows this defense inside and out.. A coach on the field.. do it. cheaply.

  50. dallascowboysdishingthereal says: Jun 2, 2014 4:33 PM

The Cowboys may be about another injury or two away from this looking like a good idea. But not now.

It’s early in this and Dallas holds hope in their young talented LBs to step up. Besides Urlacher probably has no interest in showing up now to grind through a preseason.

Later this option may grow on everyone involved.

  51. jimmysee says: Jun 2, 2014 4:37 PM

“If they don’t, a potential Hall of Fame (sic) could be coming to town to show them how it’s done.”

I would’t choose “potential” as a modifier for “Hall of Famer.”

    More like “first-ballot certain.”

And that’s coming from a life-time Packers fan.

  52. RussianBreadMaker says: Jun 2, 2014 4:42 PM

Think you meant to type “Hall of Famer”

  53. lakedog19352 says: Jun 2, 2014 4:55 PM

  56. wickerskin says: Jun 2, 2014 5:28 PM

    God forbid.

Albuquerque is considered Cowboys country by our local media for some reason. The only break we got from the cowboys nonsense here for the past decade or so was bears coverage, and that only because the local hero Urlacher was a Bear.

If Urlacher signs with the cowboys, the local media sports coverage will become damn-near unwatchable

  57. nflrule says: Jun 2, 2014 5:33 PM

Dallas lacks leadership.Any kind of leadership.Their head coach is a puppet who is a statue on the sidelines.A couple years back the Cowboys had a chance to sign Ray Lewis and passed.Make the move Jerrah.Maybe Urlacher has something left.Dont forget the Marinelli connection in Chicago.

Much respect to the Packer’s fans standing up for Urlacher and the HOF. Bears and Packers fans might hate playing each other and have the oldest and BEST rivalry in all of sports, but they also respect one another……

Unless they are capable of landing a name
at LB? Urlacher maybe the best viable
option for a year despite being 36 and
having taking a year off to rest up
