Knowshon Moreno off to an unimpressive start in Miami

knowshon AP

Two months after free agent running back Knowshon Moreno signed with the Dolphins, the talk in Miami is that Moreno hasn’t looked very good.

The Miami Herald reports that Dolphins coach Joe Philbin said Moreno’s conditioning could be better. Armando Salguero reported from the Dolphins’ Organized Team Activities that Moreno looks a little thick around the belly.

The Dolphins signed Moreno with the idea that he’d be their starting running back, but last year’s top runner in Miami, Lamar Miller, is still getting a lot of work with the first-string offense.

Moreno is coming off his best season, with 241 carries for 1,038 yards and 10 touchdowns last year in Denver. But it’s a lot easier to put up big numbers in Denver’s offense than it will be in Miami’s offense. The Dolphins need Moreno to be in tip-top shape, or else they may end up deciding that Miller remains their best option at running back.

It doesn’t matter what kind of shape he’s in. Nobody can run behind that O Line, it’s pathetic.

  2. joetoronto says: Jun 3, 2014 6:45 AM

The defense isn’t playing pass every play anymore, because of Peyton Manning.

    Surprise!

  3. thesmartest1 says: Jun 3, 2014 6:52 AM

You mean back to pre Manning level?

  4. SparkyGump says: Jun 3, 2014 7:00 AM

Maybe he hates those awful uniforms.

  5. mike83ri says: Jun 3, 2014 7:06 AM

I don’t understand why the Dolphins are trying so hard to avoid starting Miller. He’s clearly the best option they’ve had in a while.

  6. deadeye says: Jun 3, 2014 7:07 AM

Moreno is over-rated. He’s a smallish runner who lacks explosive playmaking ability. It’s hard to believe Denver used a first rounder on this guy in the same draft that they used a first rounder on Tebow.

  7. ravenswhat says: Jun 3, 2014 7:10 AM

He barely got 1,000 yards in an offense that featured the best regular season QB of all time. Anyone else not too impressed or surprised he would struggle in Miami?

  8. bradyisyourdaddy says: Jun 3, 2014 7:24 AM

Knew he was a flash in the pan, and a product of that offense… Same w Eric Decker, watch…

  9. nygmann says: Jun 3, 2014 7:31 AM

He better get in tip top shape soon because if he slacks off just the slightest bit, he will find himself gone. Out of all the sports out there, the NFL has the highest turnover rate of players.

Demaryius Thomas went the same year as Tebow. Knowshon was the same year as Robert Ayers. Either way, I don’t know how they only managed one good player out of 4 1st round picks across 2 years. Josh McDaniels was a complete failure as a head coach.

  11. themiamidolphins says: Jun 3, 2014 7:37 AM

Moreno never had a shot at starting in Miami… It is and it always has been Miller’s job to lose.

  12. eaglesw00t says: Jun 3, 2014 7:38 AM

Lesean McCoy was the steal of that draft at RB.

I sure am glad Moreno and Donald Brown were off the board.

I watched the Eagles vs Lions snow game off DVR on Sunday, and McCoy amazes me. Im glad he is an Eagle, and Andy didnt pick Moreno.

  13. ghent32 says: Jun 3, 2014 7:42 AM

    It’s OTA’s people…but I guess there’s not much else to talk about.

Moreno was one of the best of what was available, nothing more. I personally as a Dolphins fan would have gone after Blount or MJD.

But the Fins desperately needed a RB that could help block for Tannehill, and Moreno brings that. I ‘ll reserve judgment until the season actually begins.

    Fins up!

A running back can’t be judged well in non-contact drills. Fitness is a bit overrated as a likelihood of success. How many times have you heard “he lost 25 pounds in the off-season and is ready to really step it up this year” only to have said player actually perform worse.

Natural talent, knowing the playbook and desire to excel would in my estimation be a better gauge than whether a guy has six-pack abs.

If a head coach like Philbin says his “conditioning could be better” it means he is most likely getting gassed easily. For a RB, thats not a good thing. 16 games+ is a long season.

  17. woodslive says: Jun 3, 2014 8:12 AM

“Fitness is a bit overrated as a likelihood of success.”

Lol. Tell that to the Atlanta Falcons after they saw Michael Turner wobble his way to 3 yards a carry his last few years.

  18. scmems07 says: Jun 3, 2014 8:13 AM

Well according to all the football geniuses on here they should cut him now, I mean he only has 3 more months to shape up, nobody can do that in such a short amount of time.

  19. thetruq says: Jun 3, 2014 8:18 AM

As a Dolphins fan, I cringed when they signed this guy. I felt we should have drafted a good RB. And no, Miller is no more than a backup.

  20. codiablo says: Jun 3, 2014 8:20 AM

Seasoned veterans should get some time to relax & not have to be in tip top shape for otas – pres-season different story. I remember watching better football before any of this ota crap & fridge perry showed up to training camp – well, looking like a walk in freezer.

  21. scrotiemcb says: Jun 3, 2014 8:29 AM

Probably demoralized. He worked his butt off to earn that second deal in Denver and instead got banished to Miami on a crappy contract.

He probably started off nicely, tried to get up to speed on that Miami offense by watching film, and found himself occasionally checking his pulse to make sure he hadn’t quietly died.

Guys get permadrunk over lesser realities than downgrade Moreno is living.

  22. getitrightflorio says: Jun 3, 2014 8:30 AM

And this is a suprise come on man it’s the dolphins.

  23. rukkus1 says: Jun 3, 2014 8:31 AM

No way Moreno is better than Lamar Miller in the first place.

  24. pantherfan40 says: Jun 3, 2014 8:36 AM

moreno did great because of Peyton and Denver’s solid oline

  25. jgedgar70 says: Jun 3, 2014 8:50 AM

I think it is a bit of a concern. Late spring/early sumer in Florida? He could walk the length of the field at a slow pace and sweat off 10 pounds. It is still early though. If he makes it through a training camp in August and is still pudgy, then it’s a major concern.

  26. Please Ban TheStrategyExpert From Posting says: Jun 3, 2014 8:53 AM

Add him to the list of other players who disappeared when they didn’t have Peyton Manning anymore (Austin Collie, Joseph Addai, Dominic Rhodes, etc). Eric Decker will soon join that list.

    But, yeah, Peyton is terrible.

  27. brdiffee says: Jun 3, 2014 8:57 AM

As a Bronco fan, I would advise Dolphins fans not to worry too much about Moreno not being in shape. Even though he is not one of the most talented runners in the NFL, he is one of the hardest workers and he will always give you %100 effort on every play. I wish Denver could have brought him back in a relief role for Montee Ball.
He is also a top-tier blocker and catches the ball out of the backfield as good as anyone.
This was a good pick up for Miami, no matter what his conditioning is in June.

  28. uglydingo says: Jun 3, 2014 9:00 AM

This is just OTAs. Moreno will be the starter when the season commences but Miller is fast and will get his share of snaps.

  29. mfclock says: Jun 3, 2014 9:04 AM

    Bust.

  30. thraiderskin says: Jun 3, 2014 9:05 AM

I don’t believe injuries can make you a bust, but that wasn’t Moreno problem in Denver… he is a bust.

  31. clebrowns216 says: Jun 3, 2014 9:07 AM

It seems as though Miami’s offseason tradition is to overspend on mediocre players. First Mike Wallace, who I said was mediocre last offseason but everyone said “Oh well he can run fast in a straight line!”

Now Moreno, whose production was clearly due to Peyton’s offense. In fact, every player on that Denver offense has inflated numbers. Any team expecting to grab a player and get the same production is stupid.

  32. r8rsfan says: Jun 3, 2014 9:11 AM

Not a donk fan, but I think that this guy’s work ethic was in question more than once in Denver. And he would totally disappear in some games.

  33. jacobslatter says: Jun 3, 2014 9:17 AM

Thick around the belly just means there’s more of him to love.

“Knowshon Moreno sucks.” – LeSean McCoy

It’s still funny because it’s true.

  35. 23rdusernameused says: Jun 3, 2014 9:25 AM

but he’s better than shady mccoy!! that’s what he said!
    hahahahhaahhahah
    get a clue!~

  36. EJ says: Jun 3, 2014 9:52 AM

The only thing Moreno doesn’t lack is tears…
Did Miami actually think they were getting a star running back? Any runner that has ever played along side Manning has flourished being on the field with him and looked terrible the second he was gone… Reason: Defenses play the pass at all times against Manning, which gives the runner massive opportunity.

  37. panseco69 says: Jun 3, 2014 9:54 AM

Joe needs to worry about himself and the O line first, he hasn’t necessarily proved to be a top tier coach, particularly when it comes to half time adjustments…

  38. jdbaker01 says: Jun 3, 2014 9:54 AM

we shouldve drafted that RB from Auburn. Who signs FA RBs anymore? I am a dolphins fan but think this was stupid.

  39. bullcharger says: Jun 3, 2014 9:58 AM

He had a great year, but that was much to do with Manning and the offense they were running. He still got those yards though. Can’t take them away. If he showed up to camp for his new team out of shape it’s probably because he made the Super Bowl and lost. It’s going to happen to more Broncos too.

  40. archersofmtdoom says: Jun 3, 2014 10:13 AM

If I’m remembering correctly, he was a first round selection based on….what? His one highlight play where he leaped a defender while at UGA?

  41. bornahawker says: Jun 3, 2014 10:22 AM

This guy is not the one. Period. Dolphins are idiots paying this bum.

  42. gashmr says: Jun 3, 2014 10:35 AM

Teh Dolphins thought they were getting “MARINO”….LOL

  43. schmitty2 says: Jun 3, 2014 10:38 AM

I saw video and Moreno did look a little chubby. Might be the first time Armando Salguero has ever reported anything accurate.

  44. miamatt says: Jun 3, 2014 10:52 AM

Love all the desperate trolling based on OTA reports.

“Nobody can run behind that O Line, it’s pathetic.”

You mean the O-line with four new starters that we haven’t see play yet? Good point.

“The defense isn’t playing pass every play anymore, because of Peyton Manning.”

Yup, that sure is relevant during OTAs.

Apparently Moreno isn’t in the best shape. Last I checked the season doesn’t start until after Labor Day Weekend.

  45. realfootballfan says: Jun 3, 2014 10:54 AM

I didn’t even know he signed with the Dolphins, lol. When did this happen?

  46. cguy7 says: Jun 3, 2014 11:03 AM

McCoy looked good in a snowstorm, but was pedestrian when it counted against the Saints. I mean with the supposed best line in football? (according to Eagles fan…) Chips college offense will be slowed down this year. East and West plays don’t work in this league for long.

  47. billsfan1 says: Jun 3, 2014 11:08 AM

Josh McDaniels was a complete failure as a head coach.

But he is tied to Brady and Belichik so someone will come calling again…

  48. broncostevenp says: Jun 3, 2014 11:40 AM

Miami Dolphins fans….just an FYI, Moreno’s license plate read “Sauced” while he lived in Denver. Wonder why he got pulled over for a DUI at 2 in the morning?

    Good luck with that.

  49. cunninghampeetemcnabbvick says: Jun 3, 2014 12:10 PM

Dolphins fans seem very confused. One week they’re excited Bill Lazor will be running an offense similar to the Eagles but this week it won’t work in the NFL. FYI the Eagles go-to play is Inside Zone, McCoy is just good enough to bounce it outside if the defense over pursues. Watch some football once in a while.

  50. bizzmoneyb says: Jun 3, 2014 12:20 PM

he just isnt a good running back. he had mediocre stats every year until Peyton came to town and forced the safties 30 yds away.

this is why i dont understand why they did nothing to get a decemt back in free agency or the draft. Toby Gerhart was my pick. he signed a very small deal with Jax, has very low mileage and avg almost 5 yds a carry in the NFL. then they sit there on draft day and pass right by Jeremy Hill, Tre Mason, Seastrunk, etc.

it is a passing league now but you still need a quality RB, which i dont think we have.

  51. spfripp says: Jun 3, 2014 12:23 PM

The reason they brought Moreno in was for his pass blocking skill which all of Miami’s RB desperately lacked last year. I don’t expect Moreno to break a 1000 yards being that Miami does not have the passing offense that Denver has but I am hoping he could help improve the blocking of the RB.

  52. medialovesthecowboys says: Jun 3, 2014 12:26 PM

Manning has made a lot of people (including Coaches) look a lot better than they actually are.

  53. tegan3 says: Jun 3, 2014 12:33 PM

Moreno is a beast when healthy. Best blocking running back in pass protection in the entire league. Top 5 pass catching back too. No, he’s not the best power back to run through the middle but he should be amazing for helping Tannehill develop.

  54. liltifer says: Jun 3, 2014 12:48 PM

  55. lscratchingthesurface says: Jun 3, 2014 12:54 PM

I would think he’d be in shape after his signing. To me this sounds like an omen. And you would think he’d be going all out to impress his new bosses. It must have been solely for the money. Very disappointing.

  56. tictoccpthook says: Jun 3, 2014 12:56 PM

Does anybody in the Dolphins organization have a plan? They keep grabbing individuals who had good years with other teams (that knew what they were doing) , toss the players on the field, and somehow expect everything to work itself out.

  57. ruggerlad says: Jun 3, 2014 2:06 PM

With 1 returning starter on the oline how can anyone Say it is pathetic? That one player is a probowler.

  58. VenerableAxiom says: Jun 3, 2014 3:54 PM

Mareno was brought in as a third down back on the cheap considering his performance last year. Summer in Miami is a whole lot different than Denver, so he will lose weight quickly in training camp. Even so, you would like to see a pro staying in shape over the off-season, but it likely won’t be an issue come September.

As for those bashing the fins o-line, your still living in last year. They’ve made some big changes if you haven’t been paying attention, including adding another pro bowler. Please, get some insight before making embarrassing comments.
