NFL ditches Roman numerals for Super Bowl 50 logo

For the first time since the fourth Super Bowl, no Roman numerals will be affixed to the 50th Super Bowl.

The NFL has released the logo for Super Bowl 50, which will take place in the San Francisco Bay Area in 2016, and the logo uses the Arabic numeral 50, rather than the Roman numeral L. Roman numerals have been used since Super Bowl V.

Representatives from the host committee had been lobbying the NFL to allow them to ditch the ‘L’ and it appears that they have succeeded. Perhaps some promotional materials for the game will use Super Bowl L, but most will use the official logo with its great big 50.

The NFL says Roman numerals are not disappearing for good, and the 2017 game will be Super Bowl LI.

Should have just used numbers from day one. After the roman numeral 5 its gets to tricky….

  2. dan1919 says: Jun 4, 2014 2:13 PM

About time: I’m tired of seeing Super Bowl XXVii. And not knowing which one it was.. This will be easier!

  3. returntoexcellence says: Jun 4, 2014 2:13 PM

I could make that logo with “powerpoint” in about 5 minutes… are they kidding with that?

  6. aceakking says: Jun 4, 2014 2:20 PM

The NFL should change the name of the Washington football team instead!

  7. hawkfan50 says: Jun 4, 2014 2:22 PM

Both the ’50’ & the ‘LI’ will look good with the Seahawks name & logo next to them : )

  8. southpaw2k says: Jun 4, 2014 2:24 PM

Well phooey, I had hoped the Roman numerals would be gone for good. I had wanted the NFL to dump them for years. Who in the league office is stuck on the idea of using Roman numerals all the time?

  9. cardsfann1 says: Jun 4, 2014 2:26 PM

This is the only recent change that the NFL has done that I agree with. I’m sure it’s the last for a long time…

  10. dawsonleery says: Jun 4, 2014 2:28 PM

Looks fine, who cares. People just like to be negative because they have nothing better to do.

  12. nealc53 says: Jun 4, 2014 2:31 PM

Who understands that roman numeral crap anyway ? I never know what SB they are talking about…………

Arabic numbers is what us AMERICANS learned in school- why do they use something else ? = stupid!!!!

    And- SEAHAWKS 50/51 that’s a JOKE=1 /Done..

  13. Go-Hawks! says: Jun 4, 2014 2:34 PM

From a graphic arts standpoint, I think the Superbowl L could have looked really great, but apparently Americans are too dumb to read roman numerals and the NFL is too cheap to find quality graphic artists. I agree, that “Superbowl 50” looks like a middle school kid with photoshop made it.

  14. southpaw2k says: Jun 4, 2014 2:38 PM

Did no one read the final sentence of the article?

“The NFL says Roman numerals are not disappearing for good, and the 2017 game will be Super Bowl LI.”

Roman numerals will be back. This is not a permanent change, hence my earlier comment.

    Damn Greedel.

  16. thestrategyexpert says: Jun 4, 2014 2:40 PM

Numbers are better than code that needs to be deciphered into numbers, unless you are trying to keep secrets.

  17. kd75 says: Jun 4, 2014 2:41 PM

If not for the NFL I wouldn’t know Roman Numerals

  18. scorpiox1960 says: Jun 4, 2014 2:43 PM

    I like the logo anyway.

  19. citizenstrange says: Jun 4, 2014 2:43 PM

The logo makes it look like the Super Bowl will be in Pittsburgh! Coolio!

  20. mathomp3 says: Jun 4, 2014 2:46 PM

Awarded the Superbowl… about the roman numerals.

Way to shed the fortywhiner stigma Santa Clara…

  21. bucrightoff says: Jun 4, 2014 2:47 PM

Utterly embarassing logo, but it was cheap (i.e more $$$ in the NFL’s coffers) so whatever.

  22. jlo7693 says: Jun 4, 2014 2:49 PM

Looks like they ripped it off of a Curtis Lofton Jersey!

  23. ronfai says: Jun 4, 2014 2:51 PM

I thought they could do some cool stuff with ‘L’ at Levi’s stadium , oh well, no one really cares.

  24. coutre says: Jun 4, 2014 2:52 PM

Then they should call it a ogo. Get it?

  25. eastcoastninerfan says: Jun 4, 2014 2:53 PM

I’m pretty sure there are plenty of professional designers that would have done a great job designing the Superbowl L logo as spec work.

How awesome would it have been if you or your company gets credit for designing an icon image like this.

  26. dkalev says: Jun 4, 2014 2:58 PM

Roman numeral makes sense, after all this modeled after gladiator games

  27. somethingsmellsrotten says: Jun 4, 2014 2:58 PM

Last time I checked football isn’t played in Rome.

  28. overratedsteelerhater says: Jun 4, 2014 2:59 PM

it will be on TV in pittsburgh thats about it…

  29. In Teddy We Trust says: Jun 4, 2014 3:02 PM

Move the trophy to the left of the 5 and the logo would have both the L and the 50.

  30. medialovesthecowboys says: Jun 4, 2014 3:05 PM

The NFL has its favourites…the Niners being one of them. They lobbied for the change and Goodell complied. Can’t say there is anything shocking here.

  31. dtlb58 says: Jun 4, 2014 3:07 PM

I think they are forgetting SB four was IV. I never remember seeing anywhere SB 4.

Good decision. The big 50 is cool.
    Go Hawks!

  37. laxer37 says: Jun 4, 2014 3:25 PM

Good thing they caved and changed this. It was clear nobody was going to watch the game if they didn’t.

  38. kneelbeforesod says: Jun 4, 2014 3:29 PM

    That’s one L of a letdown.

  39. balfe13 says: Jun 4, 2014 3:31 PM

All the people saying that Roman Numerals are too hard to understand really make me worry for the future of this world.

  43. rje49 says: Jun 4, 2014 3:42 PM

“50” is fine. Just please no “iL”. I’m sick of seeing that “i” crap on all those electronics. People don’t even know what it means.

  44. maiphatdong says: Jun 4, 2014 4:01 PM

i remember seeing this in Tecmo Bowl

  45. angrybored says: Jun 4, 2014 4:05 PM

That is too bad. Tradition is one of the things I enjoy about sports. It is also sad that people think it is too hard to learn or too confusing.

  46. jimmysee says: Jun 4, 2014 4:16 PM

That’s because everyone would figure SuperbowlL was a misprint.

  47. kylexitron says: Jun 4, 2014 4:16 PM

no wonder 49ers and their fans always whine – they usually get their way.

and for everyone who thinks that the logo in this article is the official logo, you’re not very intelligent.

  48. realmenwearstripes says: Jun 4, 2014 4:32 PM

Our football teams consist of gladiators fighting for glory on the floor of coliseums. Every fan is an emperor giving a thumbs up/down for each contest. We must have Roman Numerals.

Did the marketing department wake up today and say, “Hey, what can we give the fans that a super majority of them are against?”

  49. Nofoolnodrool says: Jun 4, 2014 4:36 PM

They did it so Raven fans would understand better. They understand ten to twenty reduce to time served much better.

  50. b3nz0z says: Jun 4, 2014 4:44 PM

goodell thinks all the fans want this

  51. felonius1 says: Jun 4, 2014 4:45 PM

Not to sound like a plebian, but I can’t think of another reason I bother to remember them other than the Superbowl.

  52. Deb says: Jun 4, 2014 4:45 PM

Changing from Roman numerals for just one year makes absolutely no sense. So I’m not at all surprised.

  53. dumplingsrbrown says: Jun 4, 2014 4:55 PM

Maybe they are saving the L for the Pro Bowl. It would be more accurately named the Loser Bowl.

  54. greatest15412 says: Jun 4, 2014 4:57 PM

just my opinion, but maybe they should let the fans pick the logo for SB50 and the winner receive 4 tickets and all expenses to the game!?!?!?

  55. greatest15412 says: Jun 4, 2014 5:00 PM

    *create the logo*

  56. saint970 says: Jun 4, 2014 5:02 PM

Wouldn’t LI be used in 2016?

  57. saint970 says: Jun 4, 2014 5:03 PM

“The NFL says Roman numerals are not disappearing for good, and the 2017 game will be Super Bowl LI.”

  59. bobleblah says: Jun 4, 2014 5:15 PM

    Whats wrong with 5 Xs?

I would want a trophy with 5 Xs.

  60. eckiles says: Jun 4, 2014 5:41 PM

This is the worst SB logo i have seen ever. Hopefully this is not the final design.

What´s wrong with sticking to tradition and keeping the roman numerals?

I´m a graphic designer. And i´m not saying this is overall bad. But it looks very generic. And just like somebody had to do this very 3D-stylish just to please the customer who wanted it this way…

  61. macdaddyspeed says: Jun 4, 2014 6:28 PM

Good, no one will confuse the “L” on Harbugs hat for the Super Bowl now.

  62. kev86 says: Jun 4, 2014 6:47 PM

    Terrible logo and dumb idea.

  63. jollyjoker2 says: Jun 4, 2014 8:20 PM

  64. hammertoe11 says: Jun 4, 2014 9:19 PM

A lot of people don’t realize what’s really going on. They view life as a bunch of unconnected incidents and things. They don’t realize that there’s this, like, lattice of consequence that lays on top of everything.

Give you an example, show you what I mean: Suppose you’re thinkin’ about a bowl of soup. Suddenly someone’ll say, like, “bowl,” or “soup,” or “super bowl” out of the blue, no explanation. No point in lookin’ for one, either. It’s all part of getting knocked unconscious. The more you get hit in the head, the less intelligent you are.

  68. davepalma says: Jan 20, 2015 5:54 PM
