Richard Sherman to grace Madden ’15 cover

Richard Sherman AP

In yet another sign of how quickly his star has risen after being a fifth-round pick a mere three years ago, Seahawks cornerback Richard Sherman has been tabbed to appear on the cover of the “Madden NFL 15″ video game, game maker EA Sports announced Friday.

Sherman was selected by a fan vote, besting Panthers quarterback Cam Newton in the finals.

Sherman is the first defensive player on the Madden cover since Steelers safety Troy Polamalu in Madden ’10, and he is the first Seahawks player to make the cover since Seahawks tailback Shaun Alexander in Madden ’07.

Hall of Fame tailback Barry Sanders appeared on the Madden ’14 box. The previous year, Lions wide receiver Calvin Johnson appeared on the cover in the very same season that he broke the single-season receiving yardage record. However, the struggles of some who have donned the cover are part of the game’s lore.

The 26-year-old Sherman has intercepted 20 passes in his first three NFL seasons, including eight in 2013, a season capped by Seattle winning its first Super Bowl.

Why would anyone vote to have the Madeden Jinx happen to a player on your own team?

Oh, America wanted this jinx to happen.

Avoid that curse Richard! I want you healthy for the Broncos rematch so DT can take you to school again. If Manning would have had a pocket to stand in you would have gotten completely torched by DT!

This jackazz, and Calvin Pryor remind me of an old saying my mom used to tell my brother and I. She would say, “Boys, never miss an opportunity to say nothing.” Bet these two are unfamiliar with that quote.

  33. bornahawker says: Jun 6, 2014 9:33 PM

Madden cover is an honor since it is a true fan vote. The curse is irrelevant. If you are a star you deserve the cover. Cam Newton is not worthy so at least the voters got it right.
    Go Hawks!

That’s what most nfl fans think. Not the vocal minority that throw up all over this comment board with their Seahawks hate. Trust me those guys are the exception not the rule. Go hawks!!!!

That famous/ infamous interview has actually boosted Sherman’s image immensely. I dont think he’ll be a victim of the cover curse in terms of poor play. (but you cant predict the injury front)
    He deserves it all.
As for Cam, this whole madden cover deal is a major obsession. Although i think he’ll promote the game better given that he plays it often and challenges people online. But you can just see him being a victim of the curse. lol
Anyway, congrats to Sherm and i hope he keeps making people passing on him in the draft

    Richard Sherman’s last 12 months:

Leads the NFL in interceptions despite being one of the least targeted corners in the game.
    Named to Pro Bowl.
    Named 1st team All Pro.
Makes biggest play in Conference Championship game since “The Catch.”
Explodes on national scene with post game interview.
    Wins Super Bowl.
Gets massive contract extension with $40 million in guarantees.
    Makes Madden Cover.

Who’s got it better than you? Richard Sherman.

    And he’s earned it.

  131. kobebetterthanjordan says: Jun 7, 2014 3:05 AM

Seahawks got lucky last year. Niner Gang is coming 2 reclaim their spot.

  132. boobsanders says: Jun 7, 2014 3:19 AM

This is also the only thing that really changes when they introduce a new Madden version. They tweak a couple of ratings, they change the picture on the cover to drum up interest and that’s about it. Inside it’s still the same game from 3-4 years ago…

  133. vancouversportsbro says: Jun 7, 2014 3:45 AM

    Cue the hate.

People will blab on and on about how they won’t buy this game but really it will be the highest selling Madden of all time with his presence on the cover alone.

    Controversy sells.

  134. andrejohnsonforpresident says: Jun 7, 2014 3:48 AM

The funny part about it is that the Seahawks are hitting everything just right. These yearly cap raises are going to make them very good for the foreseeable future. They can afford to sign everyone now. I personally think we might be looking at the next dynasty. I hate even typing that.

  135. aunkabeatmon says: Jun 7, 2014 4:21 AM

Finally something everyone can agree on!

  136. pizzasaurus says: Jun 7, 2014 4:24 AM

How did every team in the league miss on this guy for 4 rounds before Seattle finally decided to take a flyer on him? There are no teams which can’t use a shutdown corner because Deion Sanders and Mike Haynes are already suiting up every Sunday.

Especially bizarre is the fact that the 49ers missed on him. Never mind the fact that he played his college ball a few miles away from 49ers HQ, Harbaugh and his staff developed Sherman – starting by moving him to cornerback from his original position of wide receiver. How do they whiff so badly on their own player?

  143. gpete1962 says: Jun 7, 2014 6:38 AM

I’m not saying saying he’s a bad kid and that he doesn’t deserve it. It only asks the question if he never had that outburst after the 49er game, does he ever make the cover?

This just proves to me that the the squeaky wheel always gets the oil.

The fact is that he’s been a good player, teammate, citizen and spends time with kids and charities as a role model should have been enough to get him on the cover, Unfortunately we’ll never know!!

    Vince Freegin’ Young…..hahaha

  147. housethatwalshbuilt says: Jun 7, 2014 8:15 AM

So is it picture of him holding, avoiding a tackle or a WR blowing past him?

  148. denverdude7 says: Jun 7, 2014 8:39 AM

    Congratulations Richard !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Let the Madden curse begin !!!!!!!

  149. n0hopeleft says: Jun 7, 2014 8:52 AM

    Aaaaaand he’s hurt.

  150. Goodell's Green Glasses says: Jun 7, 2014 8:56 AM

Nice to see defense for a change.

  151. newjerseygiants says: Jun 7, 2014 8:58 AM

I wonder what he gets paid for this?

  152. beauregard says: Jun 7, 2014 9:13 AM

Not just Vince Young, but Peyton Hillis too!
Sherman’s career is sure to nosedive now.

  153. somatg3 says: Jun 7, 2014 9:18 AM

Good, the jinx couldn’t happen to a better candidate

  154. scoochpooch says: Jun 7, 2014 9:19 AM

    Ruh-roh. Career could be done.

  155. nflfan22 says: Jun 7, 2014 9:29 AM

    The Madden curse always wins?
    Calvin Johnson disagrees…

  156. briank1ne says: Jun 7, 2014 9:39 AM

Calvin Johnson is the only man to get a pass on the curse.

  157. jdrewsy says: Jun 7, 2014 10:02 AM

This just shows you: dedication, perseverance, hard work and a good old side line rant at the reporter pays off!!! Congrats Richard!

  158. reesesteel23 says: Jun 7, 2014 10:04 AM

I’ll make believe its actually Sidney Rice on the cover when I buy it.

  159. smillr58 says: Jun 7, 2014 10:20 AM

    The Madden Cover Curse…

  160. omniscientmoi says: Jun 7, 2014 10:28 AM

However, you won’t be able to see Sherman’s likeness because his bloated ego occupies the entire cover.

  161. logicalvoicescowboybrother says: Jun 7, 2014 10:55 AM

As a Cowboy fan I couldn’t care less either way. BUT we complain when the players are dull and grey ~ yet complain even more when they have some swag ! So what he has a mouth ~ from when I see it he backs up his trash talk.

  162. kamthechancellor says: Jun 7, 2014 11:16 AM

Was Navarro Bowman on the cover last year?

  163. kamthechancellor says: Jun 7, 2014 11:23 AM

Was the entire Vikings team on the cover last year?

  164. kferguson2002 says: Jun 7, 2014 11:54 AM

Come back here to Indy so T.Y. Hilton can show you how much he loves this cover. Again.

  165. dan7800 says: Jun 7, 2014 12:18 PM

This is the best Madden cover in the game! Don’t you talk about it Crabtree!

  166. politicallyincorrect says: Jun 7, 2014 12:19 PM

    what a disgrace

pathetic that he and Cam Newton (who is not a very good QB) were contenders

    very poor image for NFL

wont buy this one for kid

  167. palatypus says: Jun 7, 2014 12:21 PM

That curse is mediocre at best!

  168. forty9asty says: Jun 7, 2014 12:27 PM

Have the Seahawks been on every Madden cover before this year?

  169. dycenyne says: Jun 7, 2014 12:31 PM

They should have used RGIII after the great season he had. He would have looked great gracing the cover of Madden this year. They also could’ve used Reggie Bush because of his speed and how he made Detroit an instant playoff contender since they couldn’t do it with Megatron.

  170. thebirdofprey2 says: Jun 7, 2014 12:41 PM

Richard Sherman may be a genius. He is the best CB in football but does anybody remember Revis/Champ or Nnamdi getting the madden cover or major endorsement deals when they held that title over the years?

Any announcement made, or post from Sherman it generates activity whether its hate or not its all good marketing. Seahawk threads on this site alone now rank nearly at the top each time they come out. Seattle fans love Sherman and is on the two years running best secondary in football coming off a Super Bowl win. As for this “curse” it didn’t seem to hit Calvin Johnson, Brees or Fitzgerald but hey lets keep a good myth going. Go Hawks!

  171. rosstuckershair says: Jun 7, 2014 12:42 PM

This is a win win for everyone. Non fans get the curse, Sherman feeds his ego, and the gracious winner Seahawk fans have a the game cover picture to tape to their ceiling…

  172. fearmycheese says: Jun 7, 2014 12:43 PM

Richard Sherman haters are far worst then Lebron haters. Please people give it a break. That guy hit the lottery by going on that rant.

  173. ariani1985 says: Jun 7, 2014 1:16 PM

    Acl rip please!

  174. dinkydonkey says: Jun 7, 2014 1:23 PM

Shouldn’t it actually say Richard Sherman is a
    “Dis”grace on the Madden cover.

  175. securb2013 says: Jun 7, 2014 2:43 PM

Richard Sherman does open his mouth a lot. The thing is the guy is incredibly intelligent and usually right. And no I am not a Seahawks fan.

  176. lanman11 says: Jun 7, 2014 2:54 PM

How many people voted for Michael Sam? Not that there’s anything wrong with it…

  177. staffordsyear says: Jun 7, 2014 3:34 PM

Lol madden curse..i remember when Calvin got it and everybody was like “uh oh here comes the madden curse” or “He’ll get injured and be out for the year”…Yea then he goes out on the field and sets records that year.

  178. 49erstim says: Jun 7, 2014 5:37 PM

I do not like Richard Sherman. Having said that I must point out that if you’re a loud mouth and talented in the NFL then you get a lot of opportunities off of the field and that increases your exposure and ability to earn more coin. The quiet, nice guys (looking at you Donald Driver) are better role models to be sure, but Sherman is pushing his product (himself) and trying to turn that into future revenue. Can’t fault him for that. Still don’t like him, but I completely understand what he is doing.

  179. hess97 says: Jun 7, 2014 7:15 PM

This is fitting. Rumor is niners are going to sign Leroy hill, and j.r. Sleazy to return the favor …a counter-bounty if you will. Sherm is on the list. They’re even going to go after their punter.

  180. grog79 says: Jun 8, 2014 12:37 AM

A zone CB who cannot play man shouldn’t even be considered. Dick Sherman is only the best in his own mind. I don’t remember ever seeing him shutdown a receiver.

  181. 5to46hawkfan says: Jun 8, 2014 1:28 AM

Funny how y’all be hatin and yet this is the longest thread I’ve seen in months!!!! Lol GO HAWKS!!!

  182. geniusesq says: Jun 8, 2014 4:04 AM

Guess that makes him a cover corner.

  183. originalsteelcurtain says: Jun 8, 2014 10:37 AM

Richard Sherman and “grace” do not belong in the same sentence.

Classless dude hardly makes for a role model…but class has never been a criteria for Madden cover.

  184. kevjones75 says: Jun 8, 2014 2:42 PM

Worthy specimen for the cover. However, I do sense a ‘nagging’ injury this year. Probably not enough to slow him down though. I’d kind of like to see Lyerla blow him up in Week 1

  185. ydousuk says: Jun 8, 2014 2:53 PM

    grog79 says: Jun 8, 2014 12:37 AM

    —————————————————————
Sherman was thrown at the least amount of times, and had the most interceptions so……

  186. politicallyincorrect says: Jun 8, 2014 9:01 PM

very poor move for NFL to allow guys like Newton or Sherman to be promoted…. both very overrated as players and neither a “good guy”

    disgrace

no way will I allow my kid to buy this Madden

  187. caffeene says: Jun 8, 2014 10:48 PM

Didn’t Calvin Johnson break the receiving record the year he was on the cover?

  188. politicallyincorrect says: Jun 9, 2014 8:53 AM

what is going on w/ NFL

Goodell leadership is going to be a disaster (for all but him personally)

    this is shameful by Madden

  189. justafacts2014 says: Jun 9, 2014 9:47 AM

The lesser know story here is Sherman is also featured on the cover of the NFL rules committee handbook with both his hands holding an opponent’s jersey coming off the line…lol

  190. coldwater32301 says: Jun 9, 2014 10:15 AM

How do you wish bad on someone who is successful, again these are not robots, these are man who work hard for what they have achieved… Mr. Sherman earned that and what makes it better is he said it and backed it up, you cant beat that… I would of understood if he didn’t backed it up, but he consistently and effectively did game after game… and that you can not hate on…Indeed…Go get you about 30 copies of Madden 15…

  191. politicallyincorrect says: Jun 9, 2014 12:00 PM

even worse is seeing aQB that may not even be a long-term player (mostly a game manager) come in 2nd

  192. nflpropickemking says: Jun 9, 2014 3:56 PM

This man belongs on the cover-he is the only true shutdown corner in the game, and QBs around the league know this because if they do go on his side it just might be a pick six.

  193. djstangcougar says: Jun 9, 2014 4:11 PM

Don’t test him with a sorry curse like Madden.

  194. juliusanonymous says: Jun 10, 2014 12:21 AM

So many Santa Clara fans hoping Optimus Prime will be injured. Such a classy bunch of losers. They show up at our Superbowl party, skulking and crying about what could have been. Crying to the league about our crowd noise, crying because Richard Sherman humiliated their sorry mediocre team, crying because they know Kaepernick will never be 1% of Russell Wilson.

    Superbowl count –

    Russell Wilson: 1
Kaepernick, Luck, RGIII, Cam Newton, and the rest of the nobodies: 0

The rest of you are free to to join us in the Emerald City, where RussellMania is just getting this party started. Leave those other young QBs behind and come experience what it’s like to be young, loaded and headed for a REPEAT.

To our friends in Santa Clara, may your team stay good and healthy all year so you don’t have any excuses when we humiliate you the 4th time in a row on Dec 14th. We all know your pouting coach and Dolphins-loving QB will come up with something creative. After all, it’s the only time the Santa Clara Whiners get to talk smack – AFTER A LOSS.

We don’t just have it better than you, Whiners. We ARE better. Now kiss this ring and get out of my office.

Dick Sherman meet Michael Sam…. you two should hang together

  196. salutethis says: Jun 11, 2014 4:13 PM

I voted for Sherman cause the curse works, even Calvin Johnson had no injuries, broke records and MISSED the playoffs… That’s a curse to me! And for a very annoying fanbase that rarely has a fan that remembers the last Seattle cover boy and how the curse hit him, I wonder how you will handle whatever the curse brings!

  197. scotrugby says: Jun 11, 2014 6:02 PM

Phew. I just glad they didn’t chose that sorry receiver Michael Crabtree!

  198. joenash72 says: Jun 12, 2014 5:07 PM

Russell Wilson will be on the cover next season.

    As a 2-time Superbowl Champ :-)

  199. politicallyincorrect says: Jun 12, 2014 8:49 PM

very sad to see Madden name cheapened like this

I guess game is done.. and they are just grasping at this point

  200. rg3andthensome says: Jun 13, 2014 7:47 AM

Sherman and Grace? I don’t think so.
