Raiders trying Darren McFadden on kickoff returns

Darren McFadden AP

This is the time of year to experiment, or at least to see if an idea is disastrous enough to not waste training camp time on.

So the Raiders gave running back Darren McFadden a chance to return kickoffs today in OTAs, via Scott Bair of CSNBayArea.com.

McFadden’s role as a runner figured to be reduced at least somewhat this year by the addition of veteran Maurice Jones-Drew.

But McFadden’s role is annually reduced by McFadden, as the former first-rounder hasn’t played a 16-game season yet. He hasn’t returned a kick or a punt in an NFL game in his career.

He has the requisite speed to be a dynamic returner, but there’s nothing in his resume that speaks to such a move making him more durable.

If this means Latavius getting more action as a result im all for it.

This entire process with him didn’t seem well thought through, especially after Jones-Drew was signed.

    Oh well

I think in the past the idea was to keep him healthy and try to make him a “franchise back”. Now he’s just another guy on the team trying to be productive. And if it’s on kick returns, then so be it. I’d take it as a sign that his role is viewed much differently this go round.

Cordarelle Patterson is the best kick returner to ever play the game.

    Best idea ever!

If only we had some inclination of how this is going to turn out.

Run DMc is amazingly fast in space. I can’t wait to watch him take one to the house!

Theoretically you cant really get injured on a play that does not exist any more, right?

What is the problem if he is willing to do so? Just shows his willingness to contribute to the Raiders. Every other spin would be a “hater” spin.

Well, it’s the Raiders we’re talking about, so there will be plenty of opportunities for someone to return kickoffs. Punts? Not so much.

I hope he can stay on the field this year at either position. He’s fun to watch when he’s healthy.

BAD IDEA!!! If he cant stay healthy with defenses not even running half speed at him what do you think full speed is gonna do for him.. He cant stay healthy.. And im a dmc fan but the kid is glass.. And not front windshield glass.. He is the little side window glass

He has no moves to speak of. Yeah, he’s fast; which means the hits he takes at the ten yard line will be that much harder.

End of the road for McFad. Another classic Al Davis bust!

I mean he can’t average 3 ypc on kick offs could he?

With McFadden the glass is neither half full nor half empty but half broken. Raiders should just shelve him for their playoff ru……oh….

Just like Willie Brown said in the draft after announcing the selection of Derek Carr, “I know you love us” that’s how a lot of these websites feel for the Raiders.
