Dez Bryant calls Brandon Weeden “outstanding” and “great”

Dez Bryant and Brandon Weeden have known each other since they both started playing at Oklahoma State in 2007, and Bryant has always looked up to Weeden. Even now, with Weeden as a backup in Dallas after two disappointing seasons in Cleveland, Bryant says Weeden is a whole lot better than most people think.

He’s been doing an outstanding job since he got here,” Bryant told the Dallas Morning News. “In my honest opinion, I feel like he was doing some great things out in Cleveland.”

Weeden has had plenty of work with the first-string offense during Organized Team Activities, as Cowboys starting quarterback Tony Romo is taking it slowly in recovery from back surgery and second-string quarterback Kyle Orton is staying home. If Weeden is playing as well on the Cowboys’ practice field as Bryant says, that’s good for the Cowboys. But it would be tough to find many Browns fans who would agree with Bryant’s assessment that Weeden “did some great things out in Cleveland.”

Bryant has thought highly of Weeden since they were freshmen. Bryant, who was 18 at the time, first noticed the 24-year-old Weeden because of the kind of car he could afford as a former second-round draft pick in Major League Baseball.

“I was like, ‘Man, he’s driving a BMW.’ Driving a black BMW, a black 745,” Bryant said. “Remember seeing him get out of the car in the parking lot, and I was like, ‘Damn, how did he get that?’ Somebody had told me that he had played baseball. I’m left-handed, too. I should’ve been working on my pitch game.”

That was seven years ago, and Bryant still likes what he sees from Weeden.
