The Falcons opened a couple of roster spots on Thursday, but not by placing linebacker Sean Weatherspoon on injured reserve.

Instead, the Falcons waived two players: rookie punter Matt Yoklic and veteran tight end Andrew Szczerba. Yoklic is an undrafted free agent from Pittsburgh, while Szczerba has had stints on the Falcons’ practice squad and injured reserve list since 2012. A Penn State product, Szczerba entered the NFL two years ago with Dallas.

The transactions leave the Falcons with 88 players, two under the 90-player limit.

Given the increased roster size allowed in the offseason, the club doesn’t have to rush to place Weatherspoon (ruptured Achilles) on I.R. It remains to be seen if the Falcons will look outside the organization to add LB depth.

The Falcons conclude their OTAs on Friday and hold their mandatory minicamp next week.
