NASCAR track wants to host a Jaguars preseason game

NASCAR Daytona 500 Auto Racing AP

The Jaguars are already shopping out home games to London.

But the latest place to cast an eye their way speaks English with a slightly different accent.

According to Mark Long of the Associated Press, the president of Daytona International Speedway wants to bring a game to the infield of the fabled race car track.

“We’ve not had a formal discussion with the Jags here, but we’ve got some great relationships,” DIS president Joie Chitwood said, while wearing a Jaguars jersey and hanging out on the practice field. “There’s always an opportunity.”

The Jaguars have acknowledged the need to become a regional team, and have considered farming out preseason games to places like Orlando or Gainesville or Daytona Beach.

Meanwhile, there’s a race track with a bunch of seats and few events and a big patch of grass available, and Chitwood said he’s looking at college football games, music festivals, UFC fights and soccer matches (apparently just for the cultural irony) are also things they’re looking at.

“With the investment we’re making, we can really compete for those kind of sporting events where really we didn’t have the chance before,” Chitwood said. “The property’s just too good not to use for multiple events, whether it’s the camping, the parking, just the stadium effect. … We can do this. That ball field, which is what we call it, it really fits and makes sense.”

And if nothing else, they already have the Lynryd Skynyrd cued up, so the Jacksonville fans will feel right at home.

Just move the team to L.A. (or someplace else that might actually support them) already.

Makes sense. The same people that are entertained by watching a car drive in an oval for 3 hours are the same people that are entertained by watching a Jags game.

The lack of fact-based knowledge regarding the Jags is astounding.

What better to have an NFL football game in front of 150,000 empty seats. Great publicity, I’m sure Goddell would love it!

Who are the same people that are entertained by watching the Jets & Knicks.

There would have to be a car race at the same time as a Jags preseason game takes place on the infield in order to make it interesting.

Here come the 7 stupid Jaguar fan posts stating that the posts “to move the team already” are stupid. . . .

Makes sense considering how fans will be racing for the exits after the 1st quarter.

Are they going to tarp half of the stands or just use cardboard cut outs?

  14. swagjag says: Jun 11, 2014 11:25 AM

If I had to describe Daytona in one word, it would be: ghetto. No reason for this to ever happen.

Yeah, the city/khan just spent 63 million in upgrades to our soon to be pimp stadium, and they’re going to host a jags game in the infield of Daytona? Yeah right.

Jags, biggest turnaround in the league this year.

Here comes that guy who post about Jag fans who post about lames who post “to move the team already. Stupid people are so funny especially when they don’t realize it.

NASCAR lost me when they decided they wanted all the drivers to be a bunch of well behaved pretty boys. Now their stands are half empty. Listening, NFL?

As a Jags fan, I’ve been pushing this idea to other people for a while. Once we have completed our agreement with London (3 years), I think we should give a preseason game to Daytona. It’s a good way to expand the fan base and if the game is on a Saturday, I would drive down Friday night and make a mini-vacation for the weekend. It’s a great way to regionalize the team.

For those who mock us for having tarps, think of this. Numerous teams are doing the 85% tickets sold to avoid a blackout. We had approximately 15% of our seats covered, so it’s the same thing. With the renovations to the stadium, the majority of the tarps are coming off this year. With a winning season or two, they will all come off.

Contrary to popular belief, Jacksonville has a good fan base. We have gone 6-26 the last two years, haven’t made the playoffs since 2007, haven’t had a home playoff win since 2000. Despite all of this, we haven’t had a blackout in 5 years. Not all teams would be able to say this if they were in the same situation.

I can see the ’75 Winnebago’s and ’99 Ford Camper Specials parked outside the stadium while little 5 yr olds run around with their sticky faces and in their Sam’s Club diapers. Hot dogs on the grills, 11 yr old girls sunning themselves, and Skynard or Nugent play on their K-Mart stereos. Maybe they could get Jeff Foxworthy to do his “Redneck” routine. Better idea, just hand out the SS and welfare checks before the game….that’ll guarantee no black-outs.

Can you imagine the player being sent in to play and having to dodge the 200+ MPH cars? Wow!

Maybe Khan can sell some auto parts, too?

    Too funny.

“What a stupid idea” says Cowboy fan who is ok with training camp in Oxnard, CA 1500 miles away from Dallas.

How exactly does Daytona Int’l expressing interest in a preseason game speak bad of Jacksonville? I look at is as a compliment that they see value in hosting the team. North Florida/South Georgia are more and more embracing the Jags outside of Duval. This could be the equivalence of hockey games in baseball stadiums for football and the key word is preseason. Everyone’s stadiums are half full for those games anyways regardless of ticket sales. It would be close enough for season ticket holders to make the short drive if they wanted to see a game in a unique experience. The just move ‘em already crowd is so lazy I’m surprised they had enough energy to even type that response.

One other thing: the Jaguars’ game day entertainment staff dropped all Lynyrd Skynyrd music from the playlist last year. By request of the fans, I hear.
