Report: Owner of Pabst Brewing may bid on Bills

Getty Images

It’s fitting, we suppose, that at a time the Bills reportedly are trying to extend the window for selling beer at Ralph Wilson Stadium, the latest potential buyer of the franchise owns a brewery.

According to Tim Graham of the Buffalo News, Pabst Brewing Company owner C. Dean Metropoulos could make a run at buying the team.

“The Metropoulos family has a continued interest in acquiring an NFL franchise and expects to review any such opportunity,” a spokesman said.

Metropoulos tried to buy the Jaguars in 2008.  Three years later, Wayne Weaver sold the team to Shad Khan.  Last year, Metropoulos revived the Twinkie, purchasing the snack cake division of Hostess through the bankruptcy process.

Several potential buyers of the Bills have been identified via reports, and through their own public comments.  The process could move quickly, with the overriding concern of the fan base being that the new owner won’t move the team.

If Metropoulos doesn’t buy the team, I heard Joe Gotham City is planning a bid.

Wouldn’t you have thought that the owner of PBR would have already been a Packer owner?

  4. Hard On For Harden says: Jun 12, 2014 12:08 AM

Great, we’ll end up the official hipster team of the NFL. Get ready for EJ Manuel’s ironic oversized mustache, a bunch of Arcade Fire references in his press conferences, biking to the stadium, and thick fake glasses.

  5. hakunamangata says: Jun 12, 2014 12:08 AM

    This will end well

  6. kwickett85 says: Jun 12, 2014 12:11 AM

He moved Pabst’s headquarters to Los Angeles. Not sure I can get behind this guy.

I think your smoking Pall Mall’s with that Twinkie…

  8. decaturstaley75 says: Jun 12, 2014 12:12 AM

I’m guessing the Bills would be planning to keep Blue as one of their primary uniform colors.

  9. Great Caesar's Ghost says: Jun 12, 2014 12:18 AM

    Move ’em to Milwaukee!

  10. mustbechris says: Jun 12, 2014 12:18 AM

Does this mean hipsters are gonna have to learn about sports now? Or were they already fans of the Bills before it was cool?

  11. thestrategyexpert says: Jun 12, 2014 12:23 AM

I see the plan. He’s going to pay everybody in Twinkies, but when they start to complain he’ll point out that actually their money will last longer in Twinkie form than cash in their hands.

“For some of you on this team, in 20 years these Twinkies will represent a future 1,000% higher estate value, and you’ll thank me later for preserving your wealth in traditional American style!”

  12. mp4philly says: Jun 12, 2014 12:25 AM

    C. Dean Metropoulos? Really? That sounds like a made up name. One day I’ll be rich and use my first initial, full middle and last name.

  13. Joe Schmoe says: Jun 12, 2014 12:32 AM

I gave up on beer after college…but even surrounded by poor students, I didn’t know anyone who drank Pabst Blue Ribbon.

  14. daltonsdumptruck says: Jun 12, 2014 12:34 AM

Pegula just sold some land for $1.75 Billion. He’s a more likely owner.

  15. yate3097 says: Jun 12, 2014 12:38 AM

Kick it off with a 10 cent beer night like the Cleveland Indians tried way back when. That turned out well.

  16. buffalodiehard says: Jun 12, 2014 12:43 AM

But does he want to MOVE the team to another metropolis??

  17. gofor2with3pointlead says: Jun 12, 2014 12:50 AM

Now we witness some foreign entity purchasing a once proud German/American brand and I ‘ll bet most low information, right wingers have no problem with that. Color me stunned.

  18. captainwisdom8888 says: Jun 12, 2014 12:51 AM

If I were a fan of the Bills and lived in/near Buffalo, I wouldn’t want my favorite team moved either. It would certainly hurt the City of Buffalo economically if the team were relocated, but for the overall success of the franchise it could only help. Since the year 2000, Buffalo has had a winning record JUST ONCE…and that year they barely achieved 9-7. Even despite earning top-10 draft selections seemingly each and every year, the Buffalo Bills continue to fail to put together an NFL caliber roster.

*A lot of the best football players in the nation come from down south and other various “warmer” climates, so geographically Buffalo doesn’t sound like the most ideal place to play football during the harsh winters in upstate NY. Add the fact that there is very limited talent there and who in their right mind would EVER choose to join this team via free agency? Basically if the Bills don’t starting hitting paydirt on some of their high draft picks than they are truly doomed to fail year-in and year-out.

  19. electricboogalo says: Jun 12, 2014 12:55 AM

    “You can trust Pabst Brewing.”

    -Milwaukee workers.

  20. tyler4richardson says: Jun 12, 2014 1:02 AM

Hahahahahaha, Perfect match. Both have loyal fans but a mediocre product.

  21. pnut87 says: Jun 12, 2014 1:04 AM

You rescue the Twinkie, you deserve to own a football team.

  22. oiramxiv says: Jun 12, 2014 1:17 AM

    Buffalo Blue Ribbons

  23. cavington says: Jun 12, 2014 1:32 AM

Oh god, Pabst Blue Ribbon is awful. Being a Bills fan it would be a perfect fit to have such an awful beer match what the Bills fans have been going through for the last decade plus.

  24. bannedfromchoirpractice says: Jun 12, 2014 1:43 AM

The hipsters would have an ironic stake in the Bills, if PBR buys the franchise.

  25. gpclaw says: Jun 12, 2014 2:06 AM

PBR Stadium. Home of the Blue Ribbon Bills. At least the colors are work.

  27. mrplow3 says: Jun 12, 2014 2:17 AM

  28. natelan says: Jun 12, 2014 2:35 AM

Free publicity for Pabst. Clever move by him to feign interest and have the blue ribbon plastered over every sporting news site for a couple days for free.

  29. thegreatgabbert says: Jun 12, 2014 2:47 AM

They’ll be the Pabst “Thank You For Participating” Ribbon Bills.

  30. bobzilla1001 says: Jun 12, 2014 2:56 AM

I haven’t had a Pabst Blue Ribbon in years … and for good reason: Skankiest beer ever brewed. Might be time for Genesee to put in a counter offer…

  31. gadzod says: Jun 12, 2014 3:30 AM

They better go in partnership with Golisano and possibly Pegula. Pegula just sold land for $1.7B the other day. Speculation in Buffalo is he did that to own both Sabres and Bills. He was worth $3.3B prior to this sale and has another $1.4B in land he could sell. This family better have deep deep pockets.

  32. vicnocal says: Jun 12, 2014 3:34 AM

    The Buffalo Hipsters.

  33. nosleeptilsb says: Jun 12, 2014 4:07 AM

I dont always drink a cheap beer, but when I do, I drink a PBR. Trick is, get sauced on the good stuff 1st, then put down a couple of these hammers in a can. Avoid the draft at all cost though.

  34. richdaddy1231 says: Jun 12, 2014 4:14 AM

    Crappy team,crappy beer it’s a good combo

  35. jerrysglassescleaner says: Jun 12, 2014 4:14 AM

If the NFL wants to go international, the Bills is the opening key for it. Move them to Toronto. Won’t be too far from Buffalo.

Great beer logo not so great a beer. Used to drink in college in the 70’s. Might be why I stopped drinking. Good luck Buffalo fans. Hope you get owner that keeps team in great city and builds a winner.

  44. gbfanforever says: Jun 12, 2014 6:12 AM

That’s interesting since he’s currently trying to sell pabst.

  45. sewalters79 says: Jun 12, 2014 6:37 AM

  47. chieftaindawg says: Jun 12, 2014 6:56 AM

Ralph Wilson was a great owner. Now, the stooge of the moment has their fifteen seconds of fame with their obligatory soundbite about what is best for this team. Somehow, someway, they’ll find a way to move this team, and its unfortunate. And BTW, God Bless Jim Kelly.

  48. filthymcfunny1 says: Jun 12, 2014 6:57 AM

They Should buy the packers , then they would have a real owner and would have to follow the same rules as the other NFL teams!

  49. whatjusthapped says: Jun 12, 2014 7:00 AM

Back in the college days, we used to drink that swill because it was always on sale. It was hard to look at those Minnesota coeds without downing about a half dozen of them first.

  50. billswillnevermove says: Jun 12, 2014 7:02 AM

I don’t care if Peter Pan buys the team as long as they stay in Buffalo.

  51. bal204 says: Jun 12, 2014 7:13 AM

    A perfect combination!!

  52. shaundolphinsfan23 says: Jun 12, 2014 7:21 AM

Looks like pbr wants to own not one, but two crappy products.

  53. gobs56 says: Jun 12, 2014 7:29 AM

Nice PBR only at bills home games..

  54. jgedgar70 says: Jun 12, 2014 7:33 AM

Now this would be interesting. You would have to watch Bills games in HD, so you could see all the bitter beer faces as the fans choke down PBR.

  55. hailskins75 says: Jun 12, 2014 7:34 AM

Fitting. The Bills are the PBR of NFL franchises.

  56. cardsfann1 says: Jun 12, 2014 7:40 AM

As long as they keep them in Buffalo where they belong, sounds great to me….

  57. exboomer says: Jun 12, 2014 7:43 AM

It should be a legal requirement that all bidders sign a legally binding document that they won’t move the team before they submit their bid but that probably isn’t legal.

  58. dchetz says: Jun 12, 2014 7:48 AM

Methinks he’s just saying this to get free advertisement for his crappy beer.

  59. ttommytom says: Jun 12, 2014 7:54 AM

  63. denverdude7 says: Jun 12, 2014 8:19 AM

    PBR me ASAP !!!!!!!

Please don’t let what happened to Cleveland happen to Buffalo. Just look at the mess that created.

The chances of Buffalo getting another team should the Bills move away are slim to none.

  64. corkspop says: Jun 12, 2014 8:24 AM

Football, PBR and Twinkies. Kind of like Baseball, Apple Pie and Chevrolet……

  65. iloveagoodnap says: Jun 12, 2014 8:40 AM

Guy only has a $1.2 billion net worth. He better have partners if he wants to run the team. That’s enough to buy it, and then sit on his thumbs unable to make purchases for a couple years.

  66. hehateme2 says: Jun 12, 2014 8:41 AM

Sounds like a good fit. Bad beer and bad franchise.

  67. doctormantistoboggan says: Jun 12, 2014 8:47 AM

somehow that’s perfect…crappy beer, even worse football team. together at last.

  68. deinoslogos says: Jun 12, 2014 8:49 AM

    Hipsters, your new favorite team!

  69. jeffreyshulenburg says: Jun 12, 2014 8:49 AM

He has nowhere near the assets on his own at only 1.3 billion. Even the local Buffalo billionaires have more net worth than this family. If bidding reaches 1 billion he will be selling family homes to keep up. In the mean time, Buffalo Sabres owner Terry Pegula just sold $1.75 billion in fracking lands last week.

  70. clesportsfan says: Jun 12, 2014 8:56 AM

    “Stay thirsty, my friends.”

  73. tomtravis76 says: Jun 12, 2014 9:06 AM

Pabst brewing is much like the other giant beer companies, tries to keep the small independent brewers in court paying legal fees so they can’t use their money on their dream of making beer that people enjoy. Pabst brewing sucks!!!

  74. chaseutley says: Jun 12, 2014 9:11 AM

    The Buffalo Blue Ribbons…. awesome!

…. Either change the name of the team to that, or use that name for a sandwich. A sandwich would be good.

  75. radioactivechimp says: Jun 12, 2014 9:14 AM

If he does end up buying the team, I’m celebrating by drinking cheap beer and twinkies.

  76. kozmo50 says: Jun 12, 2014 9:17 AM

    PBR baby!

  77. bornandraisedwny says: Jun 12, 2014 9:22 AM

Pabst beer, Twinkies and Duff’s wings at the game! It doesn’t get much more ‘Buffalo’ than that 🙂

  78. wtfchiefs says: Jun 12, 2014 9:27 AM

The Buffalo Bills are now the team for hipsters everywhere that will surely tell you they already liked the Bills before everyone else.

  79. footballfan14 says: Jun 12, 2014 9:42 AM

Would really like to hear the status on the Rosenhaus/Jackson situation. Has Rosenhaus broken rules and going to get suspended? If so, that is big news.

  80. heritageridgefarm says: Jun 12, 2014 10:12 AM

All these PBR haters citing it as the worst beer in the world are clueless, man. Sure, it an economic brew. But it’s much better than plenty of the other swill out there. Lost Lake. Oylimpia. Black Lable. Natural Lite. Do I need to continue? Spot on about the hipsters though.

  81. tonyc920 says: Jun 12, 2014 10:20 AM

    KEGGER NIGHT !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
That’ll draw em in the gates.

  82. zingo1978 says: Jun 12, 2014 10:37 AM

I may be completely incorrect here, but I thought that the family basically bought Pabst for their “Tommy Boy-esque” son who runs it. He’s a huge (literally) mess but always has some little models around him.

  83. pftfan says: Jun 12, 2014 10:38 AM

Great moments in irony: the majority of hipsters in Brooklyn who enjoy Pabst Blue Ribbon still won’t care about the Bills since they’re 400 miles away.

  84. mrtzl20 says: Jun 12, 2014 10:49 AM

    Buffalo Beers

  85. purpleguy says: Jun 12, 2014 10:54 AM

Wait, wait, wait, just wait. . . . . . . the only NFL team that the owner of PBR should ever own would be in WI where PBR was founded.

  86. numbr4stuna says: Jun 12, 2014 11:16 AM

I can see it now…The bills will be changing their name to the Buffalo Hipsters.

  87. competitivecompetitioncompeter says: Jun 12, 2014 11:30 AM

Pabst Blue Ribbon won that blue ribbon 121 years ago… and you thought the Steelers were living in the past.

  88. atthemurph says: Jun 12, 2014 11:33 AM

It didn’t win a Blue Ribbon for nothing.

  89. rob471773 says: Jun 12, 2014 12:34 PM

PBR tastes like a rusty nail marinated in cat urine with the smoothness of hot gravel.

  90. granadafan says: Jun 12, 2014 12:52 PM

Pour a PBR into a glass and serve it to someone, and most will tell you it’s not very good. Leave it in the can, and those same people are toasting each other. It’s a beer drunk by poor college students, rednecks, and especially douchy hipsters.

  91. atthemurph says: Jun 12, 2014 1:04 PM

Pour a glass of PBR, pour a glass of Miller, Bud, and any other American lager/Pilsner beer and do a taste test.

    Almost everyone will choose Pabst.

We’ve actually done the taste testing.

  92. bryce57 says: Jun 12, 2014 1:15 PM

  95. cheeseisfattening says: Jun 12, 2014 2:18 PM

If this sale goes through does it mean all the board members of PBR would have to sell all of their Packer stock certificates (sic) because this would create a conflict of interest in their minds for being actual owners of one team and made up, play owners of another team?

  96. irishinyourface says: Jun 12, 2014 2:19 PM
