49ers hire QB guru George Whitfield as an intern

WHIT AP

George Whitfield has made a name for himself working with individual quarterbacks, tutoring some of the game’s biggest stars.

Now, he’s working with a team, and a coach who has his own reputation for working with passers.

Via Matt Maiocco of CSNBayArea.com, Whitfield will work with the 49ers as an intern through training camp.

“I thought it’d be beneficial for us to have him here,” coach Jim Harbaugh said. “There’s no carte blanche, but we agree on a lot of things. Haven’t found anything we disagree on. So it’s not like we’ve turned our quarterbacks over to George, but he’s going to augment and assist and I think it’ll be beneficial for us, beneficial for him and should be a win-win. Always looking for that.”

Whitfield has worked with quarterbacks from Cam Newton to Andrew Luck and most recently Johnny Manziel, polishing their skills for draft preparation. Now he’s going to be another voice for Colin Kaepernick, whom the 49ers are still trying to develop after his big contract.

Curious as to a salary range for a QB gure “intern”; Six figures, at the least?

Didn’t know he was so young. Wow. He is my age (37). He has a lot of experience with QBs, so I look forward to him coaching in the NFL in the future.

Harbaugh sounds like it hurt his feelings that his bosses think he needs help coaching qbs. It is confusing to think about though; The worst passing team in the nfl every year gives their qb 20 mil/year and hires a guru to make him a better passer.

Kaep is 19-7 as a starter in the NFL including a 4-2 post season record 3 of which are road wins. Not ones to stand pat and shine the light on themselves, he and Harbaugh are pulling out all the stops to make him the most prolific QB in the NFL’s modern era.

Niner fans are blessed to have winners like Kaep and Harbaugh. The Bay Area football scene was a dreary desert of futility until these two standouts joined together to re-establish the luster to one of the leauge’s greatest franchises!

There is no salary cap for coaches. Maximize that opportunity

One of the 3 listed isn’t bad, with one yet to take the field….

Well, the 9ers will have the most pro day workout ready quarterback corps in the league.

I don’t get all the hate poured on this kid. He’s by all accounts liked by teammates, is a leader even though he’s only going into his 3rd year as a starter, 1st guy to show up every day, is intelligent & studies, is a athletic freak, runs like a deer, has a cannon arm and now has a solid corp of WRs for the 1st time. The Niers O will be a force this year. What’s not to like? Tatoos, Hats, shoes…etc? Common really.
