Falcons sign Dezmen Southward to wrap up draft class

At this rate, the entire NFL Draft class might be signed by Bastille Day. If not sooner.

The Falcons announced they had signed third-rounder Dezmen Southward today, wrapping up their draft class.

The safety from Wisconsin never missed a game in his college career, and will have an opportunity to make a quick impact for a Falcons secondary in flux.

The Falcons signed veteran safety Dwight Lowery this offseason after letting Thomas DeCoud go, but they could use someone in the back who could make a play, especially with the upheaval at the second level of their defense.

  1. If the 2 second year corners develop nicely and Southward can make an impact, it’ll mean good things for the Falcon’s getting back on track in the long term. I’m pretty optimistic about what they’ve done with the secondary, to say the least.

  2. Southward has all the athletic ability you could want in a safety. He hasn’t been playing football very long and that actually helped propel him into the third round. Based on his performance at UW he would have been a late rounder or UFA. Really got taken to town by #23 from South Carolina in the bowl game. The assumption is that there is plenty of room to improve. He’ll have to be coached up, but if it clicks for him, Falcon fans will be happy with this guy.
