The Colts are hoping the third time will be the charm with defensive tackle Brandon McKinney.

McKinney originally signed with the team in 2011, but tore his ACL and missed the year. He tried to return last season, but wound up back on injured reserve with more knee trouble and the Colts released him in August.

The door swung the other way on Thursday, though, when the Colts announced that they have brought McKinney back to the roster.

McKinney has a long history with Colts coach Chuck Pagano, playing four seasons for the Ravens while Pagano was on the Baltimore defensive staff, and that familiarity likely helped him earn another shot in Indy. Moving beyond that to his first regular season game as a member of the Colts will take showing that he’s healthy and still capable of producing as part of the reserve defensive line corps that will be sorted out in camp.
