Rex Ryan on Pettine’s playbook charge: I don’t understand what he’s trying to gain

Mike Pettine

Browns coach Mike Pettine suggested that the Patriots had copies of the Jets’ defensive playbooks during an interview with Greg Bedard of TheMMQB.com, in part because Jets coach Rex Ryan “would give them out like candy.”

Ryan didn’t know whether or not New England had a copy of any Jets materials, saying that reporters should ask Pettine because the former Jets assistant “seems like he’s got the information.” Ryan also said he didn’t understand what Pettine is “trying to gain” from sharing a tidbit of information that Ryan doesn’t think would have mattered in his team’s games against New England if it were true.

“One thing I know for a fact, it’s disrespectful to New England to say, ‘oh, they did this…’” Ryan said, via CBS New York. “Every single game, your playbook changes. Your game plan changes every single week. Your playbook, if you study your opponent, is based on your preparation. This thing has probably been blown out of proportion a little bit. To me, this is a lot to do about nothing.”

Ryan said he didn’t feel the need to speak to Pettine about anything, although he did suggest that Pettine keep quiet about such matters in the future.

Belichick was also asked about the possibility that his team had inside information and said, via the Boston Herald, interested parties should ask Pettine because Belichick didn’t know the answer to the question. If Belichick did get his hands on a playbook, it didn’t come from Alabama coach Nick Saban. Pettine mentioned that Ryan gave Saban, a friend of Belichick’s, a Jets playbook but an Alabama spokesman said, via the New York Daily News, that he never gave a copy to Belichick and would never pass along such materials.

Pettine is an idiot. Browns should not have hired him.

  5. scrp2 says: Jun 19, 2014 3:38 PM

Belichick reading the Jets playbook is like Shakespeare reading Dr. Seuss. It really doesn’t help at all.

  6. blindmansaidwhat says: Jun 19, 2014 3:39 PM

Mike Pettine clearly trying to make a name for himself in the NFL is going about it all wrong. Who did he consult with…Eric Mangini?

  7. green41563 says: Jun 19, 2014 3:40 PM

Pettine is a snake. Always has been. He’s the same guy who leaked so much negative information to Manish Mehta.

  8. jimmyt says: Jun 19, 2014 3:42 PM

A playbook is just that. To really cheat you have to have a sneaky videographer stealing the defensive play calls. Everyone knows that, especially BB.

  9. theallegedone says: Jun 19, 2014 3:46 PM

Just don’t call it “Playbookgate”. So tired of anything shady always getting “Gate” at the end.

  10. logast says: Jun 19, 2014 3:50 PM

Goodness. I am actually agreeing with Rex on something.

  12. metitometin says: Jun 19, 2014 3:52 PM

Everyone loves to dump on the Pats because they’re the NFL’s last great dynasty. People are always trying to knock off #1 especially your bitter rival. It’s so lazy to bring up Spygate because every other team was doing the same thing as the Patriots.

  13. nomoreliesfortoday says: Jun 19, 2014 3:52 PM

He doesn’t look so healthy in that picture.

  14. whiteknightblackheart says: Jun 19, 2014 3:57 PM

Looks like the circus left town with Mike Pettine. I only wish he took Mehta with him.

  15. brownsmakemecrazy says: Jun 19, 2014 4:02 PM

For a team that is awful every year, the Browns have been generating way too much media attention for themselves this off – season

For a team so bad they are like the Soap opera of the NFL. Not sure why this rock head (Pettine) would even bring this up. What his reasons were are a mystery to everyone

  16. scw1993 says: Jun 19, 2014 4:04 PM

Pettine is actually disrespecting Rex in this case. What an idiot.

  17. mcfleezy12 says: Jun 19, 2014 4:06 PM

funny how NFL coaches rely on guidance from Saban, like he was a HOFer coach. Maybe college but not pros

  18. td40 says: Jun 19, 2014 4:10 PM

So… what I gather here is that Rex is indiscriminate about his playbooks and they’re likely to find their way out of the building and into the wrong hands. I don’t see how Pettine is in the wrong or a bad guy for merely mentioning such a thing.

  19. misteranderson41 says: Jun 19, 2014 4:12 PM

i think these 2 are just busting each others’ balls in the off season, trolling around in interviews hoping if they make stuff up like this, everyone will go for the low hanging fruit and not focus on other topics, like the circus that is the NYJ and Browns….and who cares about having a playbook, every team has film on every play of every game going back since jesus wore short pants…its about execution on the field….knowing the answers to a test doesn’t mean you get an automatic 100

  20. xsorethumbx says: Jun 19, 2014 4:14 PM

same playbook they had to color code so Sanchez could try and understand it better?

  21. napalmfingers says: Jun 19, 2014 4:21 PM

How are the Patriots the NFL’s “last great dynasty” when they haven’t won a Super Bowl in a decade? And, for the love of god, please don’t bring up getting deep into the playoffs every year as a reason for labeling them as such; people acted like it was no big deal when Kelly’s Bills, Manning’s Colts and Tomlinson’s Chargers were doing it annually.

Almost doesn’t automatically count now just because it’s Belichick and the Pats.

  22. oldcracker says: Jun 19, 2014 4:40 PM

In the military, we were often told, “Discretion is the better part of valor.” Maybe Pettine should heed those words.

  23. jacobk621 says: Jun 19, 2014 4:45 PM

    “Tomlinson’s Chargers” ,,, say what ?? Are you serious ?? Bwahwahwahwah !!!!!!

  24. timmons94 says: Jun 19, 2014 4:46 PM

Fat, drunk, bald and stupid is no way to go thru life son…
What is his end game here ??? What a moron. Will fit in well in Cleveland

  25. alan226 says: Jun 19, 2014 4:55 PM

This is what you get when basically hire a high school coach.

Don’t forget, Pettine got fired from the Jets.

  26. osidebrownsfan says: Jun 19, 2014 5:02 PM

It’s not that Petine is trying to gain anything. Least we all remember the images of Mike Lombardi at the Scouting Combine sitting with Belicheck and he has documents in his possession with the Cleveland Browns Logo on them. BB is going to gain every little advantage he can from his rivals as he absolutely can.

  27. alan226 says: Jun 19, 2014 5:08 PM

Tomlinson’s Chargers? The Chargers had 10 or more wins FOUR times in the last 13 years. FOUR!!!

5-5 in the playoffs, 0-2 in the conference finals.

    A real dynasty….

  28. RE LEE says: Jun 19, 2014 5:13 PM

Pettine is just trying to out-Rex Rex. Looong ways to go. Rex is the Rex of inanities.

  29. mzim2756 says: Jun 19, 2014 5:26 PM

Petrine did not get fired from the Jets, he was offered Bills DC and took it, still an idiot though

  30. brownsmakemecrazy says: Jun 19, 2014 5:30 PM

Pat Shurmer gave Marvin Lewis the Browns playbook when it blew out of his hands across the field in a game a few yrs ago, not that Marvin Lewis needed it with Shurmers anemic offense

  31. qdog112 says: Jun 19, 2014 5:31 PM

I didn’t know Pettine prior to Manziel, but I have to say now, he seems to be talking out of school.

How strange is it for a HC to talking about other organizations like that. It’s almost like the “Johnny factor” is getting to him.

Ryan is correct. Media should ask Pettine the questions, since he made the statement as if it is fact.

    This is weird stuff.

  32. stealthjunk says: Jun 19, 2014 5:39 PM

Ahhh yes, now it makes sense how the Patriots scored a whopping 13 points against the Jets in the first matchup last season and then lost to the Jets in the second. Clearly they cheated!

This is the same thing for Spygate. Mangini was fool then. Pettine is fool now.

I had been hoping for Cleveland to improve.

    That’s over.

  37. tonybot3 says: Jun 19, 2014 8:14 PM

If you read the original quote, Pettine’s only point was that playbook secrets are not all that guarded…. He never made direct implications.

  38. clownsfan says: Jun 19, 2014 8:35 PM

Keep piling on Pettine, Johnny & the Browns while you can. Their time is coming.

  39. patriotsdefense says: Jun 19, 2014 9:50 PM

Pettines needs to learn to act like a headcoach and not a gossip at a bar telling tall tales about glory days.

  40. 34defense2014 says: Jun 19, 2014 9:50 PM

If it wasn’t for Rex! Would anyone know who Mike is/was?? Mike should be on he’s knees thanking Rex for the opportunity Rex as given him to be put in the position he has now!! As far as the Pat’s being a Dynasty? What Cool aid are you drinking??? Or smoking? Give me some!! The Pat’s looked like a Varsity team against Denver!! Then Denver looked like a JR Varsity team against the Hawks!! Bottom line is the Jets have a better Defense then the Pat’s?!! The Jets should have won both games last year against the Pat’s If they didn’t have a QB that turned the ball over at an Elia Manning rate! They would have won the first game!! Geno sucks and they still beat the almighty, King Of Coaches and his clown of a Knight in shinning armor QB!!! So let’s wait and see what this great ” Dynasty” is going to do this year?! I say, 10 and 6 at best!!! Or better yet loose the Championship game!! Or even better then that!! Loses another Super Bowl!! How many Bowl games losses would that be? Ah, I can’t remember!! To many losses, I stopped keeping count lol

  41. patriotsdefense says: Jun 19, 2014 10:24 PM

Hold on — Does this mean the Jets have a play called “Butt Fumble” in their playbook?

  42. dawgpound2009 says: Jun 19, 2014 10:37 PM

Jimmy Haslam will send him packing after Pettine serves up 4 or 5 wins. Ray Farmer gave him no wide receivers and a QB who is too busy talking on his money phone to care.

  43. pastabelly says: Jun 19, 2014 10:58 PM

The Cleveland Show faces another cancellation.

  44. j0esixpack says: Jun 20, 2014 12:17 AM

The way I see it, Pettine is doing Wrecks and the Jets a favor by providing the fans with an excuse as to why the team hasn’t been to a Super Bowl since before Man first walked on the Moon

Heck, they can’t even break their tie with the Houston Oilers for AFC east titles

Blame Belichick for allowing Wrecks to giftwrap the Jets playbook for him. BRILLIANT!

  45. nobreak1269 says: Jun 20, 2014 2:16 AM

Ummm…why has no one asked the obvious question? WHY ARE YOU PASSING OUT PLAYBOOKS LIKE CANDY REX??? EVEN IF THEY ARE DIFFERENT GAME TO GAME-WHY IN THE NAME OF GOD WOULD YOU DO IT?? DONT THE pats HAVE ENOUGH OF AN ADVANTAGE ALREADY WITH THIER SECRET RECORDINGS? ARE YOU REALLY THAT EGOTISTICAL?????
