Adrian Peterson: Most say Peyton, I say I’m the NFL’s best player

Ask Vikings running back Adrian Peterson where he ranks among the NFL’s best players, and his answer is simple.

“One,” Peterson told the Pioneer Press. “I feel I’m the best.”

Every year NFL Network polls players to determine the Top 100 players in the league, and every year the reigning Associated Press Most Valuable Player has come in at No. 1. That was Peterson last year, but it’s Peyton Manning this year, and Peterson doesn’t expect to repeat as the top player.

“Peyton will be 1, of course,” he said. “The MVP will be 1.”

Philadelphia’s LeSean McCoy made some waves this offseason by proclaiming himself the best running back in the NFL, but Peterson laughed that off.

“He’s going to have to work extremely hard to surpass me,” Peterson said. “As a young guy, he’s making his name and he’s trying to stake his claim. But numbers don’t lie.”

And Peterson says the number that should go before his name in a ranking of the top players in the NFL is No. 1.

Lets be honest……..AP is not THAT good. He’s no Calvin Johnson, thats for certain.

  3. scoops1 says: Jun 20, 2014 8:26 AM

    that’s great AP

…keep on being the best player who will never win a SB wit that franchise….

  4. schmokes says: Jun 20, 2014 8:27 AM

Peterson will go down as one of the best players who never cared about winning.

  5. luccabrazzi says: Jun 20, 2014 8:28 AM

Hard to argue. By all accounts he’s a hard worker who puts extensive time into his training. The thing is QB is the most “important” position on the field so the experts will always pick a QB over a RB. But to Peterson credit he is the most explosive “running” back since Barry sanders and that would be hard for anyone to argue. Good luck to Peterson and Peyton this yr. Can’t wait for football. ..

  6. teal379 says: Jun 20, 2014 8:29 AM

Ask 100 coaches who they’d build a team around to win a SB in the next 3 years, let me know when they say AP – go ahead, I’ll wait.

I guarantee a running back wouldn’t even be mentioned and if limited to PM or AP – PM beats him 10 to 1.

AP is a good back but he’s not the best player in the league. And good RB’s don’t have teams built around them, well they do but those teams don’t win like a team built around a good QB.

He wasn’t even the best RB last year, 4 guys ahead of him in yards, guys who fumbled less, got more first downs etc.

  7. thestrategyexpert says: Jun 20, 2014 8:30 AM

The most valuable player last year was Russell Wilson.

Peyton was just the guy who was declared to officially have won an award called MVP. And I wouldn’t trade Russell Wilson for Peyton or Adrian, even though he might not be the best, because to me the best value is the best player. I don’t see as much value in the Peyton or Adrian contracts, especially in 2013 dollars for the 2013 performances. What was Adrian watching last year? Does he realize the Seahawks won the Super Bowl and blew out Denver?

McCoy: “I’m the best RB in the league”.
Comments: “If you have to say your the best player, you probably aren’t the best player.”
AP: “I’m the best player in the league”.
    Comments: crickets.

Who cares if you’re the best RB in the league when your team can’t win 8 games. The Vikings will once again finish last in their division. No playoffs and have the best RB in the league watching from his couch.

  15. mp42245 says: Jun 20, 2014 8:52 AM

My take on this. Which player has come in and made his team better consistently. We all know Mannings history. Did Peterson make the Vikings better consistently or just achieve good numbers. Brett Farve made them better the first year he was there. CJ2K had big numbers also one year. Did he make the Titans better?
All of these guys like to have their egos stoked a bit. I’ve never seen Manning, Brady, Bree’s, or Rodgers utter “I’m the Best”
Maybe is just called “having Class”.

  16. 700levelvet says: Jun 20, 2014 8:52 AM

  17. thefirstsmilergrogan says: Jun 20, 2014 8:52 AM

i liked him more before he started giving speeches. perhaps one year a few years ago he was the best player. now, he’s not even close to the best player….

  18. punkyqb says: Jun 20, 2014 8:53 AM

Does anybody now a days have the least bit of modesty? Every other day someones the best this or the best that just because they were fortunate enough to be born strong and fast. The best anything should be reserved for the people that do the best for mankind. Not some dude that can run a 4.3 4o yd dash. Enough of this already!

  19. noringsforvikings says: Jun 20, 2014 8:55 AM

Peterson and Manning are actually very similar in that they both choke in big games. It’s just that Peterson doesn’t play in very many big games due to the fact that his team is usually terrible.

  20. jimthebuilder27 says: Jun 20, 2014 8:56 AM

A little conceited, aren’t we AP?

  21. chalkruz1989 says: Jun 20, 2014 8:58 AM

Do you guys honestly think that someone of Adrian Peterson’s caliber wakes up everyday saying I’m the second best?

He’s driven to be the best and though most would say he is not, that doesn’t deter him from thinking he’s the most elite in the NFL.

Peterson has been loyal to the Minnesota Vikings and stood by as they botched pick after pick and free agent signings. We jump down the throat of athletes that leave for greener pastures “Lebron James,” but then turn around and say Peterson doesn’t care about winning which is why he’s stayed in Minnesota for so long.

Peyton Manning is the best in the league, no question. But, to expect Peterson to admit that Peyton is better is just complex in itself.

  22. logicalvoiceslogicalvoice says: Jun 20, 2014 8:58 AM

  23. greenandgoldgirl says: Jun 20, 2014 9:00 AM

Neither is the best. Peterson has seen his best days and Manning is not even the best QB in football.

  24. petecarrolmorelikecheatpayroll says: Jun 20, 2014 9:01 AM

As a Packer fan, Peterson is the only player on the Vikings that I respect. He is losing that every time he opens his mouth.

  25. reesesteel23 says: Jun 20, 2014 9:02 AM

LOL Stop liking a guy because he thinks he’s the best at what he does? Wahh All Day thinks he’s too good wahh..Nothing he said was false. MVP that season is always # 1. Lesean has some work to do before being mentioned with All Day. And lastly, numbers don’t lie. Go cry some more ya big baby.

Four running backs has more total and average yards in 2013. Even Demarco Murray averaged more yards. Thumbs down don’t change those facts.

  29. gotdressedinabooth says: Jun 20, 2014 9:08 AM

we are still talking about the same guy who rushed for 2000 yards coming off of a torn ACL in wayyy less time than probably anyone.. Ever… right?

For the haters who say he’ll never win a super bowl, well it is a team sport last i remember. And he does play with the Minnesota Vikings, last I remember. Simple math.

  30. deadcoach says: Jun 20, 2014 9:12 AM

If you are talking about the best football player, I think the standard should be if you cloned him a couple dozen times, would a team of Peyton Mannings beat a team of Adrian Petersons. Sure, they Peytons could pass better, but the Petersons would be better at running, blocking, tackling, and catching. And maybe kicking too. There’s more to football than just passing or running. The best total football player is probably a tight end or a linebacker. Or maybe JJ Watt.

  31. poiuyt7 says: Jun 20, 2014 9:12 AM

A few years ago, Adrian Peterson was an extremely humble player. What happened to that person? He is now the most arrogant, self-centered player in the league — and that’s saying a lot. We never hear him talking about helping the Vikings win, just how great he is. All he cares about are his personal accolades.

  38. summitmech says: Jun 20, 2014 9:26 AM

“I guarantee a running back wouldn’t even be mentioned and if limited to PM or AP – PM beats him 10 to 1.”

Then Terry Bradshaw, a multiple SB-winning Quarterback, must be that one. How ironic you say all that, considering Peyton is BETTER known for LOSING playoff games and superbowls.

  39. discountdoublecheck says: Jun 20, 2014 9:27 AM

  40. flrouse says: Jun 20, 2014 9:33 AM

    Notice I said almost.

  41. jaglazer says: Jun 20, 2014 9:33 AM

not even the 2nd best player in the NFC North. he sat in bigplaycj’s shadow on draft day, and hasn’t ever peeked out. Aaron Rodgers > AP too.

  42. rho1953 says: Jun 20, 2014 9:33 AM

“All day” refers to his boasting, not his talent, which is fading. “No Super Bowl for you”!

  43. fwippel says: Jun 20, 2014 9:38 AM

As a Viking fan, I’d really like to see Peterson concentrate more on ‘team’ and less on telling us how good he is.

No question Peterson is one of the best players in the NFL. We know that. Now, he needs to help his team figure out how to win a championship.

  44. jimmysee says: Jun 20, 2014 9:39 AM

He does have a big yap.

Time to stop saying, AP, and start doing.

  45. richndc says: Jun 20, 2014 9:43 AM

One thing is for sure. Peyton would never proclaim himself to be the best. I always thought AP was pure class, I think that less and less every time he opens his mouth and says something like this.

  46. truthfactory says: Jun 20, 2014 9:44 AM

Sorry Adrian, you may be the best at your position, but Peyton Manning can make anything that he’s on a legitimate Super Bowl contender.

  47. deaconjfm says: Jun 20, 2014 9:47 AM

no doubt you are real good but Peyton is out there for every snap

  48. irishgary says: Jun 20, 2014 9:47 AM

He once was the best RB in football, on the downslide now

  49. atthemurph says: Jun 20, 2014 9:47 AM

Adrian, how can the best player n the league not know who to block on passing downs? Shouldn’t he be smart enough to read a defense and be able to pick up a blitz rather than being relegated to the sidelines because he’s a QB killer?

You’re a hell of a runner but the best needs to be able to do all the things a position requires. He’s the best runner of the ball but I’d take several other RBs for my team before I’d take AP. I want a RB who can block, catch, run and hang onto the ball.

As for Manning being the best player? Give me a break. He’s a noodle-armed QB who wears out as the season goes on. He might be the best player in the league in September but not in January.

  58. ilovefoolsball says: Jun 20, 2014 10:01 AM

Say what you will about Peyton, he brought two different teams to Superbowl games.

AP hasn’t even been to one Superbowl game, but he’ll get his chance when Minneapolis hosts the game. FINALLY!

  59. leatherface2012 says: Jun 20, 2014 10:04 AM

to all of the AP haters that say he hasnt done anything in this league. how many of you have rushed for over 10k yards in the nfl? none of you. how many of you could bring him down in the open field? none of you, 3 more years of 1333 yards a year….very doable. he jumps from 27th all time to number 4 behind barry sanders. if he can get 2 years beyond that, he is a physical freak. he should end up #2 behind emmitt smith. not bad for a rb that hasnt done anything in the nfl huh?

Peterson has always been pulled on passing downs because he can’t/won’t block and he can’t catch the ball.

I would think one would have to be an every down back first before self proclaimed greatness.

The vikings created this monster. Without a QB, when the vikings were behind during garbage time in a game, they would keep handing off to Peterson. Defenses weren’t concerned because the vikings were killing the clock by running.

Getting the majority of his rushing yards in the 2nd half is bad for a losing team.

He carried this team on his back for years when the supporting cast was second string talent, when the coaching was second rate and when the defense couldn’t get a stop on 3rd and 50. Say whatever you want, think whatever you want, just keep running, breaking tackles and giving 120% until we have enough talent around you to really let you shine. Viking nation is behind you.

Peterson may have been the best 15, 20 years ago, but in today’s NFL, a running back simply can’t be the best player because they have no where close to the impact that a QB has. When he has his 2000 yard season and was far and away the best RB in the league, he dragged his team into the playoffs but exited the first round.

  90. kulserd says: Jun 20, 2014 12:12 PM

Seriously people? Wouldn’t you want your team’s best player to think he is the best and then go try to prove it on the field?

Listen to the interview… the whole thing. Not just snippets that are taken out of context.

He thinks he should be ranked number 1, and that’s the attitude, as a fan, I want him to have. The difference between him and Chris Johnson is that AP will work his ass off to prove it and hold himself accountable, not just rest on the laurels of one good season.

Sure, you’d take Peyton 10 times out of 10 to build a team right now because he is still the best QB in the league… but as for an overall athlete who you can depend on game after game, AP is my guy. Take QB out of the equation, because everyone will inevitably rank QB’s higher in the “best player” polls. Best player in the NFL non QB? In my mind it’s AP… Calvin Johnson is probably a close second… but LeSean McCoy isn’t even close. You are talking a sure fire Hall of Fame RB in AP v. a Good Running Back in LeSean, who won’t make the Hall… ever.

Best player is AP or Megatron.

32 out of 32 teams would take Megatron to be their WR1.

I’d say 30 out of 32 would take AP as their back.

8-10 teams would rather have their own QB than Manning. Reasons ranging from his weak arm strength to his inability to win in the playoffs to his inability to scramble. He’s one of the best QBs of all time, but he’s not the best player in the league. Clearly the best future coach though.

  94. scw1993 says: Jun 20, 2014 12:18 PM

“He wasn’t even the best RB last year, 4 guys ahead of him in yards, guys who fumbled less, got more first downs etc.”

Fumbled less? Hmmmm…lets see….Peterson has played 7 seasons…..lets compare these better guys against him in their first 7 seasons:

    AP 10,115 5.0 31
    ESmith 8,674 4.3 36
    Sanders 10,172 4.9 31
    Payton 8,386 4.3 56
    Dickerson 11,226 4.6 71
    Tomlinson 10,650 4.5 24

Here are some other candidates and their fumbles their first seven years:

It seems to me Peterson is on the low end of the all time greats in terms of fumbles.

  98. bhlobos says: Jun 20, 2014 12:26 PM

To me, this is the real problem… the media asking these guys who they think is number 1. McCoy, AP, Sherman, Cromartie… you ask them, they’ll answer. It’s not like they go running around looking for someone so that they can say they’re the best.

  99. ktm300xcwe says: Jun 20, 2014 12:31 PM

Gee, he couldn’t have had less yards due to a freak injury, could he?

He was second in rushing yds per game to McCoy ahead of all others.

AP did have 5 fumbles last year, Charles had 4, McCoy had 1, Forte had 2, and Morris had 5, same as AP.

“He wasn’t even the best RB last year, 4 guys ahead of him in yards, guys who fumbled less, got more first downs etc.”

Not even the best RB in the NFC north anymore.

  103. tved12 says: Jun 20, 2014 1:36 PM

It’s always the same old thing from fans.

A guy answers a question with a cookie cutter response and he’s boring.

A guy answers a question as he believes, he’s got a big mouth.

Then those same fans that say he’s “classless” go on to tell us that it’s “fact” that somebody on their team is the best in the NFL.

Peterson has always said he thinks he’s the best. Every time he’s been asked, why is it such a shock now?

I’m sure Manning thinks he’s the best, even though he won’t say it.

  104. jcbadger34 says: Jun 20, 2014 1:52 PM

I sincerely hope none of the people talking about Peyton being a “choker” are Vikings fans.

In his time in the league, Peterson has exactly ONE playoff win, and that only happened because of Brett Favre’s revenge tour. Even Jay Cutler has one playoff win.

In his one chance to reach the Super Bowl, Peterson fumbled about eleventy billion times in the NFC Championship.

    Who is the choker again?

  105. tjacks7 says: Jun 20, 2014 1:58 PM

Did you really expect AP to answer the question “where would you rank yourself amongst current players?” with “well, I’m probably the 2nd or 3rd best player in the league.” I’m sure and top 25 player will tell you they’re the best player in the league.

  107. o0omorriso0o says: Jun 20, 2014 3:00 PM

LeSean McCoy is a better back than Peterson. How can Peterson be the best back in the league or even the best player in the league when he has to come out of the game on 3rd and longs because he cannot catch or block?

All I ask is that people (and the media) use their heads with this debate. Which player does more for his team… McCoy or Peterson? McCoy is the better fact and that is a FACT!!!

  108. jayblack073 says: Jun 20, 2014 3:02 PM

He is the best pure football player in the NFL. He is football personified.

  109. dinkydonkey says: Jun 20, 2014 3:05 PM

Richard Sherman and Drew Brees would both like to disagree with that statement.

  110. ktm300xcwe says: Jun 20, 2014 3:05 PM

He can catch and he can block, the reason he came out early in his career is because the Vikings had Chester Taylor for that role. He came the last three years because Musgrave is a complete failure as a Offensive Coordinator.

  111. opneon says: Jun 20, 2014 3:11 PM

No class – especially after showing very little emotion for his fatally ill child. Maybe he should shut his mouth after that incident.

Did Peyton finish in last place for 3 of the last 4 seasons?

  113. nrns77 says: Jun 20, 2014 3:24 PM

He’s not even the best RB anymore, let alone the best player in the NFL. He is several years past his prime. Look for him to fade out in about 2 years. RBs that run that hard don’t make it much past 30, statistically.

  114. tokyofilthblaster says: Jun 20, 2014 3:26 PM

Maybe he’s more of a nice guy than a great player. Because nice guys always finish last.

  115. sandersmarcus10 says: Jun 20, 2014 3:36 PM

Manning good team around him and sucks in playoffs and SB. AP has nothing around him to take the pressure off with 8, 9 man lines, McCoys funs stops this year because everyone has seen the Oregon O now.

  126. garrettmagnuson91 says: Jun 20, 2014 4:50 PM

If the running back was the most important position on the team then yes Adrian Peterson would be the no. 1 player in the NFL but the quarterback is the most important position so that is why Peyton is the no. 1 player. You can’t win a Super Bowl with Adrian Peterson and a terrible QB.

  127. thefirstsmilergrogan says: Jun 20, 2014 4:56 PM

–That would be a total loser’s mentality…so, yeah. I do believe that’s what most of the negative posters here would probably expect and do themselves. I personally wouldn’t want anybody on my team if they didn’t think they were or could be the best at what they do.

The Vikings would be thrilled to even get out of last place with Peterson and a terrible QB. I suspect that isn’t going to happen in 2014 making it 4 times in the last 5 years that the Vikings will finish last.

All these doubting comments directed at All Day is fine. He’s busted you’re sh!tty opinions before.
The nfl changed rules on lowering the rb’s head; & yet, he’s beaten those odds as well.
    Point is, he’s the best.

  135. sportsfan18 says: Jun 20, 2014 9:45 PM

Active players should NOT talk abut this stuff.

It’s for fans and sports writers.

I mean, whether AP is the 1st or 2nd best player in the NFL does not get him any extra yards on ANY of his runs this season.

If Peyton is number 1 or 2 it does not get him anymore touchdown passes, completions, wins etc…

Or another player for those not thinking these guys are 1 & 2 in some order.

If they are #1, #4, #7 or #10, that, their rank does NOTHING for their performance.

Now, when a guy has been retired a bit, maybe he can talk about it, where HE ranks.

The only ranking active players should discuss is OTHER players… NOT themselves.

AP, you’re fantastic, an all time great sir. But I don’t want to hear YOU talk about where YOU rank in the game today or all time.

Wait until you retire and let others talk about where you rank right now in the game…

This is coming from a Vikings fan….why cant these guys just shut up, play ball & let the numbers do the talking.
Yeah AP in my eyes you are awesome! But I also think Peyton Manning is awesome, as is Arron Rogers, Drew Breez, Calvin Johnson, Tom Brady just to name a few.
I have a lot more respect for the humble guy who goes out & plays his heart out, than I do those who are bagadoscious.

  138. txnative65 says: Jun 21, 2014 3:34 AM

  139. mortwannabe says: Jun 21, 2014 9:53 AM

  140. sandman58769 says: Jun 21, 2014 10:14 AM

Peterson is a top 3 player at his position but running to daylight is a little different from calling a play and the protection packages and the audibles that go with it and putting the team in the best position to win on every play! What I mean is that playing running back isn’t exactly a cerebral position!

  141. tokyofilthblaster says: Jun 21, 2014 11:33 AM

When it’s all said and done, I think Peterson will historically be remembered for coming up 9 yards short of Eric Dickerson. And that’s it.

  142. jaygruntboston says: Jun 21, 2014 7:12 PM

    2 playoff losers

  143. jayfish6402 says: Jun 21, 2014 11:21 PM

I have the same amount of Super Bowl wins as Adrian Peterson. I always will.

  144. jayfish6402 says: Jun 21, 2014 11:27 PM

It’s hard to decide a best player in the entire NFL when they do completely different things. I take Peterson in his prime, undoubtedly, over McCoy in his prime. I also take Tom Brady over Peyton Manning in their primes. If Manning could operate in the cold like he does in the warm, he beats Brady. But he doesn’t cuz Manning can’t throw in the cold.

  145. joe1willie2namath says: Jun 22, 2014 5:09 AM

SORRY, But BARRY SANDERS was the greatest to play the game. The only reason Barry quit playing was because Barry’s dad was a big Jim Brown fan and his dad told Barry that he would never beat Jim browns records, so when he got close to beating Jim Browns records he retired, so his dads idol Jim Brown would still be the best in his dads eyes. Now believe it or not, that’s the truth. BARRY SANDERS IS THE BEST TO PLAY THE GAME. ENOUGH SAID.

  146. snowlock2013 says: Jun 22, 2014 3:01 PM

Much love AD, but Peyton even blocks better than you.

  147. jacksprat57 says: Jun 25, 2014 12:37 AM

“The most valuable player last year was Russell Wilson. Peyton was just the guy who was declared to officially have won an award called MVP. And I wouldn’t trade Russell Wilson for Peyton or Adrian, even though he might not be the best, because to me the best value is the best player. I don’t see as much value in the Peyton or Adrian contracts, especially in 2013 dollars for the 2013 performances.”

By that logic, then, there should be no debate. Tim Duncan, comparing salaries to league averages, is the second best player in the history of the NBA. Better than the “greedy” LeBron James, Magic Johnson, Oscar Robertson, and Larry Bird. Better than Wilt Chamberlain, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, and Shaq. Better than Kobe, too.

    Naw. That logic is stupid.
