Derek Carr up to No. 2 on Raiders depth chart

AP

Raiders coach Dennis Allen raved about quarterback Matt Schaub this week and his comments seemed to slow any immediate rise to the starting lineup for second-round pick Derek Carr.

They didn’t stop Carr from rising at all, however. Allen said that Carr will open training camp as the No. 2 quarterback ahead of Matt McGloin and that the team wants to speed up the NFL immersion of a player who has been better than the team expected this spring.

“We’re trying to expedite his progression,” Allen said, via CSNBayArea.com. “I like a lot of the things that I’ve seen out of Derek. He’s still got a long way to go, but I like the direction that he’s headed.”

If Carr handles the expedited progression (and defenses trying to hit him) well this summer and Schaub fails to impress, there may be a cause for the Raiders to rethink their decision about a starting quarterback for 2014. Even if it doesn’t, it seems the Raiders feel optimistic that they’ve landed a future starter at quarterback.

  1. Don’t much about Carr other than what I’ve learned since the draft. But I do know Schaub, since his days at Virginia.

From VA to ATL to HOU, Schaub seems to have played his best football. The guy OAK got is not the same guy drafted by ATL. I’m afraid his “use by date” has come and gone.

The year he had in HOU could break any man. He looked defeated and I just don’t see a comeback, especially in the “black hole”. If he thought HOU fans were mean, he’ll see Oakland fans as “pure evil” if he makes mistakes like he did last year.

I think Carr plays sooner than later.

  2. Ultimate test, standing in the pocket and find your receiver while defenders are whizzing by you wanting to rip your head off

  3. I didn’t want the Vikings to touch him with a 10 foot pole in the first round but I think he could be a 2nd round steal. Comfortable environment for a Bakersfield kid. He will be a perfect fit as the Raiders QB of the future.

  4. Carr is the best QB 2 come out N this year draft,. Hands-down. 2 get him N the 2nd round was outstanding !! This guy was view as a mid , 1st rounder. Hopefully he’ll make alot teams pay 4 over looking him bekuzz of his brother ..smh.

  5. Meanwhile in Minnesota tiny hands bridgewater is still 3rd string behind their other major reach Ponder. Yes still behind Ponder ladies and gentlemen.

  6. Raider fans already setting aside a place for him in the hall of fame as usual the delusional fans posted the same things about Matt Flynn and Pryor before.
The team needs a real GM not someone the Packers
were happy to get rid using Wolf as the conduit.

  7. I’m a huge Raider fan but I think it’s to early to gush about how good Carr is. Remember JaFarcus and how much he was suppose to be the new superstar? Give Carr time and a little experience without throwing him into the fire. Let him earn the #2 spot above McGoin. I think he’ll be a good QB if they don’t rush him. Raiders………….stick to the plan and he should be a good QB. Keep a good OL to protect him. Go Raiders!!!!!!!

Liar. Many Raider fans wanted to see Pryor start, and for a couple of games even fans of other teams were claiming the Raiders finally found their quarterback. I don’t recall Flynn getting much love at all.

  9. The raiders will stick with “the plan”. Schaub will start and will bring Carr in when he is ready, no sooner. Raiders will finally be entertaining to watch this year, it’s been a long time for us die hard raider fans.

  10. What would it hurt to take a look at Vince Young….. Don’t let this guy retire without bringing him in for a tryout…. (NFL Rookie of the Year, 2 Pro Bowls, Playoff experience and Mobility). Vince has a career winning record of 31-19… He can help this team…even if it’s only to upgrade the team’s quarterback pool…

  12. I am sure there a few here who had Matt McGloin going to Canton after 1 or 2 games last year (aka Terrell Pryor Haters) that are shocked to hear this, but was expecting that.

  13. @ nflfolly
That so called GM that the packers were in a rush to get rid of as you sat, turned the packers completely around and won Super Bowl. Flynn and Palmer wer just Veteran loaners till hey could find a QB in the Draft/ what I will say is that Shaub wast a complete waste of a trade he won’t last 3 games as a starter

  14. How come nobody’s talking about Eli Manning like they are about Schaub. They both had bad years on a TEAMS that fell apart. Yet The narrative seems to be Eli will be back but Schaub is finished. Let’s just pump the brakes chill out and see what happens.
