Matt Barkley bristles at criticism of his arm strength

Matt Barkley AP

Eagles quarterback Matt Barkley has heard the questions about whether his arm is strong enough to succeed in the NFL, and he doesn’t take kindly to them.

Barkley personally responded on a Reddit thread titled, “Barkley’s arm strength a concern” to say that his arm strength is no concern at all. Responding to Jimmy Kempski of Philly.com, who wrote that Barkley may “struggle to stay in the league” if he can’t improve the velocity on his throws, Barkley wrote on Reddit that it simply isn’t true.

“Easy there Jimmy, you don’t know a thing about that route, the defensive coverage, technique of the wide receiver, the route he was actually running, let alone my maximum velocity arm strength,” Barkley wrote. “We can play catch sometime if you want to figure out for yourself how hard I can throw it, just lemme know.”

Maybe Barkley is right, and he can put more heat on the ball in a game situation than he showed at minicamp. But the next time he plays in a game, he’ll have to be a lot better than he was in limited game action as a rookie, when he completed 30 of 49 passes for 300 yards, with no touchdowns, four interceptions and three fumbles. If that’s how Barkley plays in the preseason, he may be in danger of getting cut.

Never let them know that they can get under your skin, Mr Barkley. The media are vultures.

He went from one perennial failure of a team to another. The odds are awesome that he’ll fail. Its Philly. Thats all they’ve done since 1960.

  3. icdogg says: Jun 21, 2014 10:42 AM

I for one hope that they do have that game of catch Barkley proposes to settle the matter and document it on video for all to see. Kempski already posted a reply “My schedule is open”.

Matt is a kid who chose not to come out after his junior season when he very well may have gone #1 overall (no guarantees, but the odds were pretty good).

Fine, maybe he would not have gone #1…

The top 3 players in the 2013 NFL draft each got over $20 million guaranteed.

Now, we all know you’re only young once, college IS fun and can’t ever get it back. Yes, can go back and get or finish a degree, but not like living on campus as a kid while playing college ball.

BUT… while college IS fun, he CHOSE fun over a GUARANTEED amount of money.

To make it simple, let’s say he would have gotten $20 million over 4 yrs. Take out taxes, agent commission and let’s just say, to make it easy, he ended up with $10 million dollars.

Uh, GUARANTEED folks, like even if he got in a terrible car accident and could no longer play.

What happens if you get hurt outside of work and no longer may perform the duties of your job? Do they still pay you millions for a certain amount of time per a contract you signed with them?

Just how far can $10 million dollars go?

(I know, cost of living would rise etc… again I’m using easy numbers just for the gist of what I’m getting at).

A college grad gets out and earns $100K a year for 10 straight yrs. That’s $1 million dollars.

    Oh, it’s NOT guaranteed either.

ONLY 90 more years until that college grad earns $10 million while making $100K a year.

So, one would have to make $100K a year for 100 yrs to get to $10 million and none of it is guaranteed during those 100 yrs you have to bring yourself to work and do a good job.

    Yes, cost of living, inflation…

No, he did NOT think he would drop like he did in the draft.

Now, let’s say he DOES wash OUT of the league this year.

Time to work and I bet he doesn’t make $100K a year for the next 30 to 40 yrs and even if he did, it wouldn’t be guaranteed and he’d have to be going into work each work day to earn it vs. doing what he wanted like playing golf while his $10 million was hopefully working for him.

Folks, you TAKE the GUARANTEED money when it is available because NONE of us knows what life has in store. Yes, the odds were in his favor that the money would still be there the next yr after his senior season… but it didn’t work out that way.

Life has a way of doing that to people. When you have a chance at a GUARANTEED $10 million plus in life, you TAKE it.

Matt, sadly, is a young man who did not and who did not have anyone around him like his parents, an advisor who could explain to him that gravy trains like this do NOT always come around a 2nd time, even when the odds appear to be in your favor.

Matt, I’m rooting for you. Good luck kid.

He will be cut in the preseason. Eagles got their starter in Foles and all butt fumble jokes aside Sanchez has a lot of starts under his belt and playoff wins which make him a solid backup. As a Skins fan nothing would make me happier to see Barkley on the Eagles roster.

  20. 6ball says: Jun 21, 2014 11:59 AM

Chip Kelly has a reputation for being a good judge of offensive talent. If he has Barkley on the roster, it must be for a reason.

One of the key rules to success in the NFL: don’t draft a quarterback from southern California.

  22. zinn22 says: Jun 21, 2014 12:07 PM

His arm strength certainly has to better than Sanchez who has one of the weakest arms in the league.

The test for Barkey is not his arm strength but can he beat out Sanchez for the number 2. If he can’t beat out Sanchez his future is not very bright and he just better focus on getting 3 full years in the league so he can qualify for a pension.

Matt, you don’t need a good arm to run that mickey mouse offense in Philly. Or be able to read a def for that matter. It is all pre determined before the snap by the coach where the ball is going. If the first read is gone take the sack and live to fight another day. That’s what foles does with his pea shooter of an arm and low football iq. You fit right in . No need to bristle.

Eagles fans are by far my favorite to harass. They no nothing about the game and yet take it so seriously. This team will regress this yr. All of last year was just first exposure to this gimmick. Now they know what to expect. 27-2 might be the most overrated stat going. 7 tds were against a brutal raiders team that didn’t know what to expect. The reason why he only has two ints is because he takes no chances because of his lack of arm strength. Kelly tells him to dink and dunk basically because he has no faith in his arm. It might get you to the playoffs but you ll never be elite with foles. You know I’m right.

  38. granadafan says: Jun 21, 2014 3:43 PM

Those claiming Barkley would have been #1 coming out of his junior year have quickly forgotten the evaluation and combines. His faults would have been exposed during pro days and workouts. Remember all those who claimed Manziel and Bridgewater would be top draft picks? The real experts are those making football decisions, not fans who read a few mock drafts by talking heads with fancy hair.

I am a Viking fan and can respect the leadership and talent of chip and Foles. Barkley should have come out after Junior year, but he is far from cooked!!!
The clown GB trolls that like to take shots at the Vikings in an Eagles post , seriously? Your team has hit it’s ceiling! We all have seen Your O-line, and the shots Erin Rodgers has taken. He is lucky to finish the season with 8 starts!!!! Your team has maxed out and their is a new sherif in the North, Mike Zimmer, and the BridgeH20 era has begun!!!

  51. sndflyers says: Jun 22, 2014 5:10 AM

However, that criticism is no longer valid.
According to Pro Football Focus No quarterback in the NFL posted completions of 20 yards or longer than Foles, who finished the season with 17.4 percent of his passes traveling that distance
Furthermore: Additionally, Foles’ accuracy on deep passes ranks seventh in the league at 45.5 percent, which is ahead of the likes of Philip Rivers, Tony Romo, Drew Brees, Tom Brady and Andrew Luck. He even completed 14 of his 29 touchdowns this season on passes of 20 or more, which ranks behind only Brees and Andy Dalton who are tied with 15.

These numbers come on the heels of Foles becoming the only rookie in NFL history to average 260 yards per game while completing over 63 percent of his passes during the 2012 season.

I’m sorry what we’re you saying about “dinking and dunking” down the field?

It wouldnt matter if barkley started 4 the eagles cause the cowboys would still only win. 8 games 8-8 three yrs in a row trade romo he will never win a super bowl ring hes just like dan marino puts up a ton of stats and misses playoffs thats why jerry jones is so much in favor of expanding the playoffs cause he knows the cowboys are a mediocre team that would never have a chance otherwise im thinking this year cowboys record 6-10 no sean lee no demarcus ware cowboys have went to crap ever since parcells left they’d prolly have another super bowl by now if jerry jones would act like an owner and sign checks and keep his butt up in the sky boxes

  54. Youknowimright says: Jun 22, 2014 9:52 AM

I love to make you guys do meaningless research. The majority of foles deep passes were underthrown due to his lack of arm strength. Receivers either had to make difficult catches and get no yac or they had to come back for the ball when they were wide open and get minimal yac. they were wide open due to the newness of chip’s system which people will be used to this yr. And foles might actually have to put one into a small window. He will have more picks this yr based on that. It is nice to go to a website and regurgitate numbers. I can teach a monkey to do that. Now Why don’t you actually watch a game and disect what really happens. Foles downfield passes are all up for grabs he throws balls that come down with ice on them. He will take a step back this year. Sometimes numbers do lie and you know I’m always right.

  55. sylvester000001 says: Jun 22, 2014 9:34 PM

Unfortunately this is one of those topics where you have to invoke..”If you’ever never actually played this game in organized fashion on some level, you don’t know what you’re talking about”.

Barkley’s arm strength is no issue. But you will have to have played to be able to see that and I know people hate when you say that. Arm strength is about how few seconds, and partial seconds the ball is in the open air in it’s travel. It’s not about the bomb and not just about sticking that 15 yard out pattern. His poor stats don’t show the fact that he can gun the ball. He just wasn’t successful as a green (no pun intended) brand new NFL player.

His non-success had nothing to do with arm strength. If you know what you’re talking about, he has arm strength and you can see it in his passes. It’s actually obvious. But, you have to know what you’re talking about to understand that.

  56. pftisfulloftrolls says: Jun 22, 2014 10:07 PM

There’s more important things than arm strength. Guys like Jaworski and Kiper beg to differ but there’s bigger things than arm strength. Joe Montana and Tom Brady didn’t have the strongest arms but they’re NFL legends, while Ryan Leaf and Brandon Weeden had cannon arms and ended up as busts. Now do I think that Barkleys’ problems go further than arm strength? Yes. Doubly so if he can’t beat out Sanchez. Do I believe Foles will regress? Yeah, 27/2 is unsustainable even in the lowest of low risk passing offenses. However I don’t believe he’ll struggle and turn into some pick-slinging buffoon either, especially given all that offensive talent around him.

  57. Youknowimright says: Jun 22, 2014 10:09 PM

I played it and currently coach it so I’m assuming you are not talking to me, but barkely does struggle with his velocity. He had a pretty significant shoulder injury. I cannot imagine he is long for this league. On a lighter note I just wanted to thank all of you eagle fans for entertaining me during my vacation dumps this week. I will see you down the road. Dont take it so seriously. Nothing that magical happens when your team wins a sb.

when you’re standing behind an NFL caliber OL,
throwing to NFL caliber WR’s and handing it off to NFL caliber RB’s, then you’re bound to look pretty good.
Those stats you get are certainly padded,
& you have very few instances that show how you handle adversity.

There hasn’t been a decent USC -to- NFL QB since Palmer.
