Dolphins’ offensive line now calls itself a close, good group of guys

There’s no better sign that the Richie Incognito-Jonathan Martin era in Miami is over than this: The Dolphins’ offensive linemen view themselves as a close bunch.

The only offensive lineman back from last year’s core group is Mike Pouncey, as Incognito and Martin are both gone and so are John Jerry, Bryant McKinnie and Tyson Clabo. Brought in were free agents Shelley Smith and Branden Albert and rookie draft picks Ja’Wuan James and Billy Turner. Guard Dallas Thomas, who didn’t start at all as a rookie last year, is expected to start this year.

So what do all the changes mean? Smith says it means they’ve got a group of guys who haven’t known each other long but are already getting along well.

“We’ve got some characters in the room and the guys are great. They’re hard working and funny. We spend a lot of time together. It makes it easier when you have a good group of guys like that. We all get along great,” Smith told the Sun-Sentinel.

The Dolphins’ offensive line has gone through a lot of change, but a lot of change was needed.

“Consistency is always good, but as you know with this business that’s not always the case. So you have to adapt to whatever situation comes up,” Smith said.

The good news for the Dolphins is that whatever situation comes up, it will not be as bad as the disaster that engulfed their offensive line last year.

  1. I cannot wait to see Buffalo defensive line completely destroy these bums. Mario, Kyle Williams, Jerry Hughes and Manny Lawson will have a field day with this line.

The Fins did get swept by Thad Lewis!

    Lmfao.

  2. Yeah… Tannehill was terrible in 2013 with his terrible, low character offensive line, injured free agent tight end (out for season Dustin Keller), no running back, and no #2 or #3 wide receivers.

    24 td – 17 int

    58 sacks (most in NFL)

  3. Offensive lines needs to be a strength of a team and so a young qb and backfield can live up to its pontential. Fins are still 1-2 lineman away from that mark. On a scale of 10 right now they are a 5-6.

  4. Good, now all they need to do is get Dolphin fans to buy in. I could never understand why they defended the indefensible especially since the previous group of lineman led by a maniac weren’t very good.

  5. The behavior scandal nonwithstanding, the lack of keeping Ryan Tannehill off the turf last year was appalling.

I am optimistic that if they manage to solve that problem, this year has a much better chance of going the way they, and fans, want it to go.

I’ll certainly take what sounds like good news in June than what sounds like bad news in June.

  6. @rob8375 they took tranny 8th overall and he was projected to go in 4th rd that’s back up QB round maybe even practice squad

  7. They were a close knit group last year too, until one money grubbing whimp took his trail lawyer moms advice and found a way to sue the team.

  8. If my Miami Dolphins OLine is even 2 secs better than last year’s unit… we will win the AFC East and make a strong run in the playoffs…Bet that…Indeed…

  9. I will believe it when I see it. As a Dolphins fan I have 0 faith in this team. Win, keep Tannehill up right (even though I don’t believe that was this issue for his horrid performance the last two years), create holes for the runners, and block. All will be forgiven. But this is just blowing smoke up peoples butts.

  10. Tannehill wasn’t terrible he just played a little too timid at times…afraid to make mistakes and held the ball too long… But we’re praying that with the OTA’s and camp his timing with the Oline and receivers are impeccable…Indeed…

Really?? Was that on your draft board? Do you dress up as Mel Kiper and have your mom interview you?

  12. Ithink we will see what the Fins have on Sept 7th when they open up @ home against the Pats. Final score Fins 27 Pats 17.

  13. No matter how much time the offensive line gives Ryan Tannehill, he will still miss Mike Wallace wide open streaking down the sideline. Matt Moore will be the starter by the 3rd game……

  14. A lot of things kept us out of the playoffs.
Poor, overly predictable OC play calls, a truly bad OL, a ton of injuries and BullyGate. The poor high draft pick production (Dion Jordan, Jamar Taylor, Will Davis), and high price FA pick ups like Wheeler didn’t help the defense either – yet we were still close.

Hopefully changes made will help improve all that.
I don’t expect miracles, but some upgrades and a couple more wins over losses are definite expectations.

  15. The’ knowalls’ on here have no clue about Tannehill. If he had an offensive line last year it might not have been so bad. Just wait until the season starts and then criticize, because I’ll bet your own team is not so perfect either. Some of you have a lot to say about something you know nothing about.

  16. Please people, this team was one win away from the playoffs last year. They lost 3 games they had no business losing and 2 or 3 that were by 3 or less. If even half of those are corrected this team will be playing for a home playoff game this year. Tannehill was not and is not the problem.

  17. Jet & Bill fans are ACTUALLY ripping Tannehill??? That’s hilarious. Geno Smith & EJ Manuel are two of the worst QB’s in the NFL. That’s a fact & while they’re both pretty good athletes–you can’t be a starting NFL QB when you’re not accurate & neither of them is close to accurate.

Say what you want about our terrible O-line, our awful running game, & our pathetic run Defense last year but give me a break on Tannehill. He was MUCH better as a rookie then both of those clowns & I expect he’ll take a significant step forward this year w/ a competent OC.

  18. That Sept 7th game could be be a sack fest. Only its Brady getting sacked. Jordon could get one, Vernon, Starks, Odrick, a blitzing d-back. And then comes Cam Wake. With all the big talkers from New England saying the Fins and their QB sucks I think they are going to have a much tougher day than they think.
