PFT Live: Vikings talk with Chris Tomasson, PFT Planet calls and tweets

Teddy Bridgewater, Matt Cassel AP

When the Vikings start training camp, they will have a big question to answer at quarterback.

Many observers feel that Matt Cassel will be the starter when the regular season gets underway, but coach Mike Zimmer says it will be a while before he names anyone as the No. 1 in Minnesota. Chris Tomasson of the Pioneer Press will join Mike Florio on Tuesday’s PFT Live to discuss the quarterback competition, how close Teddy Bridgewater is to being ready and what Adrian Peterson’s role will look like in Norv Turner’s offense.

After we ask Tomasson questions, PFT Planet can ask us a few. Florio will answer your questions during the show, so send them in on Twitter — @ProFootballTalk — or by giving a call to 888-237-5269 during the program.

It all gets started at noon ET and you can watch it all live by clicking right here.

As a Viking 4life since 1968-Cassel will start and have an outstanding year. Bridgewater (an excellent pick by the way) will get his chance soon enough-there is no hurry-period!!!

This team is stacked with 3rd-string QBs. The only question is which one do they throw to the wolves first?

How is this guy and his baby sized Michael Jackson gloved hands actually believe he can beat me out of the starting job when he is T-Jack 2.0?

  5. vikinganswer says: Jun 24, 2014 12:10 PM

Not an excellent pick. A wasted high pick for a clipboard holder. If they can make a QB out of TB, then Ponder definitely has a chance to be considered as an option. Not sure i want that because his idiot decisions drive me nuts. Better than being driven to drinking watching TB fail as expected.

  7. Norseman says: Jun 24, 2014 12:13 PM

I think Norv is comfortable with Cassel as a starter, but in the end Teddy’s arm, the zip on his passes, and his play-making ability will win the day- Bridgewater will start.

I really don’t think by the end of training camp that Cassel will have much above the neck advantage to off-set his disadvantages elsewhere.

  8. golforepar says: Jun 24, 2014 12:27 PM

The picture makes “Baby hands” Bridgewater look like he is 5′ 2″ so maybe his hands are comparable to the rest of his little body.

  9. Aaron Rodgers Has Tiny Hands says: Jun 24, 2014 12:34 PM

Seriously, it doesn’t make sense to throw Bridgewater to the wolves in Game 1 when you have a competent veteran available. That game would be the first time Teddy has encountered the true speed of the NFL game and the kinds of defenses teams are going to throw at him. Let him sit and watch for a while and see if we can get off to a good start.

  10. whatthehellisgoingonoutthere says: Jun 24, 2014 12:50 PM

Bridgewater better hope and pray that the NFL doesn’t change it’s policy for QB’s wearing gloves. His fledgling mediocre career would be over before is started. Which would be a shame since he would never really get the opportunity to follow in Tavaris Jackson’s footsteps.

It is truly amazing to see how uninformed Vikings fans are. They don’t even realize that while ripping on the Packers defense, they are ripping on their own defense that finished 31st and 32nd in yards/points allowed.

The Packers were 25th in both and had the #3 offense while missing the best QB in the NFL for half the season.

  13. Aaron Rodgers Has Tiny Hands says: Jun 24, 2014 2:27 PM

It is truly amazing to see how uninformed Packer fans are. Viking fans are well aware that the Viking defense was terrible last year. The Packer defense was also terrible, but not as bad as the Vikings. HOWEVER, the Vikings actually took major steps to improve their defense in the offseason, while the Packers’ big move was to sign an over-the-hill has-been defensive end and move him to linebacker. The Vikings’ defense will be much improved this year while the Packers will probably stay about the same.

You know, last year’s stats don’t always tell the story of this year.

  14. themeccalambeaufield says: Jun 24, 2014 2:55 PM

Is that ball balancing on his hand in that picture? Looks like he is pushing the ball because his hand isn’t big enough to grip it.

Yeah tiny hands the Vikings once again have the stellar offseason according to you for the 5th straight year and were the only team to improve on defense? They only had their best defensive player leave because he did not have any confidence and get replaced with a 4th year player who averages 24 tackles and 4 sacks. Also sign a average runt db while Williams also is gone and replaced with a 1st rd pick who couldn’t get on the field. Rhodes last years #1 couldn’t muster an int. and yet they have improved. I guess when you are last you can only go up right?

  15. whatthehellisgoingonoutthere says: Jun 24, 2014 2:58 PM

The Packers defense will be healthy this year. That in itself will have a significant impact. Matthews back and DROY Heyward along with Peppers in a complimentary role. Not to mention Perry and Jones not having nagging injuries and getting the best safety in the draft.

Meanwhile………the Vikings got rid of their 2 best players on defense, signed a horrible DE who couldn’t even start for the Bears and a midget CB who is always referred to as mediocre. Great moves indeed!

  16. mortwannabe says: Jun 24, 2014 3:16 PM

Just like their beloved Jim Marshall the Viking organization going the wrong way.

  17. ariani1985 says: Jun 24, 2014 3:34 PM

but they signed little Samantha Sheilds to a large contract!!!! Packers defense has always been pathetic and always will be!!!!!

    In turd you trust?

  18. ariani1985 says: Jun 24, 2014 3:35 PM

Trust me, “Soft” and “Peppers” will not last the season….once soft always soft….go pack go!!!

  19. bobnelsonjr says: Jun 24, 2014 3:50 PM

Ponder beat out Cassel last season to become the starter and there is no reason to believe he will not do it again.

Hidden Hands cannot be ready in his rookie year.

Quarterback by committee hasn’t been tried before so it could be the thing to try and sell tickets this season.
They can call it the Triangle of Leadership.

  21. Aaron Rodgers Has Tiny Hands says: Jun 24, 2014 4:11 PM

While Jared Allen and Kevin Williams were dominating the NFL, all Packer fans could say was that they were too old and their team was great because they were the youngest in the NFL. Now that they’re paying $10 million to a guy who is older and worse than Allen and Williams while the Vikings are getting younger, having defensive linemen in their mid-30′s is the key to success.

  22. thepftpoetisacrossdresser says: Jun 24, 2014 4:21 PM

    You guys are pathetic.

MN will go thru all 3 back-up QB’s this year at one point or another.

MN will likely lose your baby maker RB again for a bit because he’s being worked to death like a farm pony and he’s getting old.

MN will undoubtedly be last place by a long shot in the NFC North….6-10 may be a stretch. The Lions regressing to .500 under Caldwell may take some eyes off of your suckitude for a short time.

MN will continue to talk smack like they always do. You all seem like you live in Napoleon Dynamite world. You will be terrible on Offense, at best average on defense but will gas out on too many 3 and outs.

MN will have one of the top 6 picks again in next year’s draft because you simply suck too much for your own good.

Make fun of that Packer defense again and again…they’ve finished above your own team’s defense 2 years running with big injuries and you’re dumb enough to still think you’re better. You’re not by a LONG shot and will get murdered this year.

  23. whatthehellisgoingonoutthere says: Jun 24, 2014 4:38 PM

Nobody said that Allen and Williams were old when they were still producing. But the fact is Peppers and his athleticism is being used as a compliment to Matthews, not Pass Rusher #1. That in itself is a big difference. And how can you really judge his season last year when he was the only player on the entire D-line that anyone focused on. The guy opposite him was so bad they moved him from DE to LB and the team didn’t even switch to a 3-4 defense.

  24. whatthehellisgoingonoutthere says: Jun 24, 2014 4:41 PM

The Packers “horrible” defense referred to by Vikings fans has allowed fewer points/game than the Vikings in each of the last 5 seasons. #SKOLOLOLOL

A team finished 8-7-1 and still wins the division with the best QB in the game missing half the season and their best defensive player missing half the season as well as one of their top WR’s.

But things will only get worse with their return. SKOLOLOL

  27. vikings84 says: Jun 24, 2014 5:12 PM

Guys half of you don’t even know what you are talking about. Yeah, the Vikings defense wasn’t great last year, but let’s take a look at that. Harrison Smith was out for over 3/4 of the year. Xavier Rhodes was out for a while and they had just lost Winfield. This is just a few examples. The Packers had all of their guys that they wanted and they still stunk. There is no way that Teddy B will not excel with this team. Every team will be stacking the box waiting for Adrian Peterson to get the ball, so that will open up so many options for Teddy and the Vikes. If you haven’t been paying attention to the NFL Lately Teddy Bridgewater has been “flawless”.

The Bears are the Vikings rivals? LOL I live in MN and can tell you first hand that is not even close to being accurate. Vikings fans obsess about their storied neighbor to the east that has all of the championships, history and tradition.

I’ve never heard one Vikings fans refer to the Bears as their biggest rival in 20+ years of living in MN. The Packers have had a much more competitive team than the Bears over their history, especially recent. Which would explain why the Packers have more championships than any team in the NFL.

So, you live in the Great State of Minnesota, and yet you still talk bad about the hand that feeds you. But I guess I wouldnt want to live in a place like “wisconsin” either… what a poor excuse for a state.. “wisconsin’s” one profitable company is all that folks over there seem to live for… What else is there? Top notch health care? nope, above average economy? nope, top notch overall Quality of living? nope.. but luckily for you all The Great State of Minnesota is still allowing your type to work here, and even live here. as always the Great State of Minnesota, has, is, and always will be superior…. and its not even close……… MN> wi

  39. whatthehellisgoingonoutthere says: Jun 24, 2014 7:48 PM

The Packers had a bad stretch over 2 decades AFTER winning 5 championships in 7 years. People had plenty to keep them going after that kind of crazy success.

The Vikings haven’t had to worry about the falloff after the end of a dynasty that won championships….or even A championship.

  40. bobnelsonjr says: Jun 24, 2014 8:17 PM

Minnesota was Packers territory long before the vikings.

40% of NFL fans in Minnesota are Packers fans. The vikings “flagship” radio station KFAN runs Packers programming. Packer fan gear is sold in the Mall of America and in the MSP airport.

The viking obsession with the Packers is that every viking customer has a neighbor, coworker, relative, or friend that is a Packers fan. They cannot get away from it.

  41. whatthehellisgoingonoutthere says: Jun 24, 2014 9:41 PM

  43. whatjusthapped says: Jun 25, 2014 8:35 AM

The Bridgewater decision should be epic, he is destined to be a bust so the question becomes, do you play him in 2014 and arrive at that logical conclusion early on or do you start one of the incompetent two glorified clip board holders you have on your roster?

Like so many other Viking personnel decisions of the past, its a lose-lose situation. Losing is what the franchise has seemed to master best with last place finishes in 3 out of the last 4 seasons.

  44. purplengolduntilimdeadandcold says: Jun 26, 2014 10:27 AM

Packer fans will always be ignorant. Simple and plain.
