The Ravens brought in a new offensive coordinator this offseason and quarterback Joe Flacco says that Gary Kubiak’s scheme uses “completely different” terminology than the one Jim Caldwell ran in 2013.
That change has left Flacco and the rest of the offensive players with some studying to do, but the quarterback was quick to say during an interview on WNST that learning the offense wasn’t exactly figuring out the theory of relativity.
“Football is football. I mean, come on guys, we’re talking about a bunch of football players,” Flacco said, via the team’s website. “It’s not tough to learn an offense. At the end of the day, you have a formation, you have protection, you have a direction to run the ball and you have a route to run as a receiver. It’s not that tough. If you can’t learn an NFL offense, then obviously you shouldn’t be there. ... I’m saying, we’re not the brightest people, so therefore how hard can an NFL offense be?”
Flacco said one of the biggest differences from last year is that the team is playing faster on offense because players have fewer things to think about when they get to the line of scrimmage and can concentrate on “doing what we’re good at.” The Ravens weren’t good at much on offense last season, so perhaps a more streamlined approach will bear fruit for them come September.
