Bills confirm Kiko Alonso has torn ACL, likely out for season

The fears of the Bills have been confirmed: Kiko Alonso has a torn ACL.

Alonso, the linebacker who burst onto the scene as a rookie last season and was expected to be a huge part of the defense this year and for years to come, is expected to miss the entire season. Bills General Manager Doug Whaley confirmed in a statement released on Wednesday that Alonso isn’t likely to play again until 2015.

“Unfortunately, he suffered a torn ACL in his left knee and will most likely miss the 2014 season,” Whaley said. “He will be scheduled for surgery in the near future and begin a rehabilitation program at the appropriate time. We feel badly for Kiko because he has worked very hard this offseason in preparation for the upcoming season, but we look forward to his return with his style of play that made him one of the league’s outstanding rookies in 2013.”

Although it’s at least theoretically possible that Alonso could recover in time to be ready late in the regular season, it seems highly unlikely that he’ll take the field at all until 2015.

  1. What a bummer – I really enjoyed seeing his highlights and effort on-field.

    -Eagles fan

  2. The only comfort here (very small) is that he was scheduled to move to the Outside LB position, and, a great Middle LB has been signed. Now the Bills have to wait a year to see how that combo would have panned out.

  3. Good luck recovering Kiko! Really liked watching ya play. Must be hard being a Bills fan

  4. This is a huge blow and it sucks for the Bills. Speedy recovery to Kiko, and that’s it.

Bills and Bills fans have fed off excuses for over a decade now. No more excuses. Good teams lose good players to tough injuries all the time. How they overcome is what separates good teams from average ones.

If the Bills are truly a good team as many fans would have you believe, then this is the time they prove it by overcoming adversity. No more excuses.

  5. This is terrible news. Regardless of whether I’m a Dolphin fan I hate to see ANY player on ANY team suffer a serious injury. This kid was outstanding last year & it’s hard to believe he was picked two rounds after Dion Jordan (both played @ Oregon) who did nothing for us as a rookie.

With guys like Mario Williams, Kyle Williams, Jerry Hughes, plus a very good secondary I still think the Bills defense is going to be very good this year.

  6. That stinks. He was on the fast track to being a Top-5 player in the league at his position.

  7. This is one of the reasons the Patriots easily win the AFC East. Just when the other Teams have a rising Star and heading in the right direction. This happens. Dolphins (Pouncey), Bills (Kiko), Jets (well, a mental injury for not getting a QB who doesn’t turn the ball over on a consistent basis). Gosh, I really miss the good ol’ days of the Bills and Fins matchups for the Title. When the Jets were Fodder (and still are) and the Pats were Follies (NFL Films Blooper reel).

  8. Spikes wants to be traded. (before they do a drug test) Says he never cared that much for the Bills anyway.

  9. Preston Brown, the Bills 3rd round pick and Nigel Bradham, a promising 3rd year backup are now in the top spot to take over. As with Byrd leaving, this isnt a kill shot for the Bills season. We have built depth at that position. The question is just how much of a step down Brown or Bradham will be over Alonso (Bradham was seeing starting snaps last year and Brown was running with the 1s in OTAs and working the def. mic.

  10. Hate seeing any player getting hurt. Shame for such a young guy and a very talented one to go down like this.

The good news is that an ACL tear now is not as serious of an injury as it was about a decade ago.

I am a Ravens fan and our great CB Webb has blown out his ACL in both knees and in one knee twice. He has come back from that and about the mid way through last season he was looking like his old self again and playing outstanding football.

It is pretty amazing to see how far medicine has advanced. About 10 years ago this would have ended his career.

  11. I’m not a Bills fan, but as a football fan, this sucks. You always want to see the best play. Tough loss for everyone.

  12. tough luck, sorry kid. he was great last year for them. Any chance brady can copy his workout?

  13. Another undersized a duck hurt in NFL. Makes one wonder as to the scrutiny in Duck program to certain things. Hate to see kid with that much drive hurt.

  14. Honestly this hurts. It hurts bad. The loss of Byrd was something we could recover. The loss of kiko combined with the loss of Mike Pettine though is truly devastating. With that said the likely hood of bills being good is quickly dwindling and before I thought our run game and a great defense would be enough to get us in the playoffs but now we will sink or swim with EJ.

  15. Great fan base in Buffalo. Hopefully, Bon Jovi buys the franchise; I expect he would be an excellent owner. I do fear that he would poach his pal, Bill Belichick, by offering him an ownership stake that he doesn’t have to buy. I would hate to think the Bills would step into the Patriots shoes and the Patriots into the Jets shoes post Belichick.

  16. Now that top 10 pick given to Cleveland next year will be a top 5 pick! He blew out Hoyer’s knee last year on a shady hit, and now he’s paying for it. Thanks bud!
