A horse reportedly named for Giants wide receiver Victor Cruz has captured his second straight stakes race in New York.
Kid Cruz overhauled entrymate Captain Serious (named for Chicago Blackhawks player Jonathan Toews) to win the Grade III $200,000 Dwyer Stakes by three-quarters of a length at New York’s Belmont Park on Saturday.
The winner’s share was $115,000, increasing Kid Cruz’s bankroll to $363,375. The three-year-old bay colt has won 5-of-8 races, including three stakes. Kid Cruz has bounced back from an eighth-place finish in the Preakness Stakes to win the Easy Goer Stakes at Belmont on June 7 and today’s Dwyer, which was contested at a mile-and-a-sixteenth.
According to Jerry Bossert of the New York Daily News, Kid Cruz’s next start is slated to be in the $600,000 Jim Dandy Stakes at Saratoga Race Course on July 26. The Jim Dandy will air on NBCSN.
