The Dolphins rank 31st in PFT’s preseason power rankings

Joe Philbin AP

Dolphins head coach Joe Philbin needs a good season to hold onto his job, but PFT doesn’t think he’s going to get it.

We’re rolling out our preseason power rankings and the Dolphins are almost at the bottom of the ocean. A vote of the PFT staff saw the Dolphins come in at No. 31, just one spot above the Raiders.

The Dolphins came close to a playoff spot last season, but saw everything fall apart in the final two weeks as they scored seven points in a pair of losses. It was the end of a trying season that saw players lost to key injuries and an already struggling offensive line implode when tackle Jonathan Martin left the team amid accusations of harassment from his teammates.

The offseason was spent rebuilding the line, but that effort hit a major snag with center Mike Pouncey’s hip surgery knocking him out for at least the next few months. There are other questions about the offense, including ones about Ryan Tannehill’s ability to be the franchise quarterback in Miami. Our panel thought the answers would find the Dolphins seriously lacking, but we want to know if you agree. Check out the preview and let us know in the poll below.

They’re not as bad as this. The Dolphins have a top ten defense and an improved offense. If the offensive line is better, which I think it will be, then this is a 8-10 win team. Last year was a nightmare and in retrospect the collapse was inevitable. This year will be different and they’ll play tougher.

Somehow the Browns and Bills manage to be worse.

  3. justinstuckrule says: Jul 7, 2014 3:13 PM

My Giants threw in the towel on 2014 several weeks ago when they ended practice early after Beason’s big injury doomed the defense. I’m surprised they weren’t ranked #31 or #32.

  4. patsbrat says: Jul 7, 2014 3:13 PM

The Dolphins are absolutely better than this.

…and Jags fans celebrate their team climbing the rankings…

  5. crussell75 says: Jul 7, 2014 3:14 PM

You can tell by the small number of comments here that very few people outside of Miami care about the Dolphins. 31st is fine for them until they prove to be even close to relevant.

  6. captainwisdom8888 says: Jul 7, 2014 3:16 PM

There’s quite a few teams that will be battling the Dolphins and Raiders for the title of league’s worst…the Bills, Buccaneers, Jaguars, Rams, Vikings. The list goes on and on.

  7. posmoo says: Jul 7, 2014 3:18 PM

they won 8 games falling down at the end of last season, with one of the worst offensive lines in the past decade.

  8. cwakes13 says: Jul 7, 2014 3:20 PM

WOW. Worst case scenario, the dolphins finish 6-10. They were 8-8 last year. Perhaps the rankers are just remembering the final two games – which in that case, yes, they looked like one of the worst teams in the league. However, the offense this year should put up more points with a new and improved line and system. The dolphins finished top 10 in scoring defense last year and it remains mostly the same for this year, with a couple of new additions. Time for the Fins to prove these guys wrong.

  9. billsysabres says: Jul 7, 2014 3:21 PM

Didn’t the bills sweep the dolphins last year

  10. thephinatic says: Jul 7, 2014 3:21 PM

Some teams worse than the dolphins, jags, browns, bills, texans, bucs, just to name a few…

  11. themeccalambeaufield says: Jul 7, 2014 3:23 PM

Biased in here Vikings deserved this honor by perennially finishing in last.

  12. jeffreyshulenburg says: Jul 7, 2014 3:26 PM

Coming from a Bills fan, the Fins are nowhere near 31st. Mid 20s is a bit more their range. There are a lot of teams that belong behind Miami, Buffalo coincidentally is not one of them :D

    Squish the Fish(-like mammal)!

  13. miamisam1966 says: Jul 7, 2014 3:28 PM

In a league where Oakland, Jacksonville and Cleveland play there is no way Miami is 31st. They were 8-8 last year and improved over the off season. Miami is middle of the pack at worst and will contend for a playoff spot this year. This ranking must of come from a delusional Jets fan.

  15. doctorrustbelt says: Jul 7, 2014 3:33 PM

Amazingly… the 2014 Miami Dolphins will probably win the AFC East.

  16. nysportsrule says: Jul 7, 2014 3:38 PM

No way they should be this low. I remember saying this same thing last year and they played much better.

  17. tformation says: Jul 7, 2014 3:39 PM

Yeah, this seems low… just having a capable QB like Tannehill puts the fish above the Jags & Browns… possibly the Bills and Jets too.

  18. tedmurph says: Jul 7, 2014 3:43 PM

I know these things are just foolin around, but this is a head scratcher. The win total in Vegas is 8, with about 10 teams under them. It’s still a bad div, although all 4 teams should improve a little over last yr.

  19. cpitch12 says: Jul 7, 2014 3:45 PM

Yea but this is the year they take the division from New England…….smerk…..

  20. wydok says: Jul 7, 2014 3:49 PM

Uh, How are the Dolphins under the Bills, Browns, Jaguars? Probably a few others I can’t think of.

  21. thegreatgabbert says: Jul 7, 2014 3:49 PM

When you’re number 31 you try harder.

  22. cuda1234 says: Jul 7, 2014 3:50 PM

The team didn’t implode when Martin quit, it imploded when the media forced Miami’s Pro Bowl LG off the team for saying bad things. #Disgraceful

  23. thegreatgabbert says: Jul 7, 2014 3:51 PM

Philbin The Phin could scarcely restrain his joy, “We’re not last guys, we’re not last!”.

  24. ampats says: Jul 7, 2014 3:56 PM

Based on Josh Alper’s rankings, the Dolphins are in the drivers seat for the Marcus Mariota pick as the Raiders drafted Carr this year.

  25. thebandit27 says: Jul 7, 2014 4:05 PM

Apparently there’s a few folks on here with incredibly short memories–the Bills swept Miami last year with Thad Lewis at QB…maybe 31 isn’t so far off

  26. smackingfools says: Jul 7, 2014 4:07 PM

31st is a total joke. Before the last 2 games of the season the media was talking Philbin as coach of the year. They controlled their own destiny until the last week of the season. Yes, they flopped at the end. But 31st? Come on.

Worse than who? You just named a bunch of teams but failed to say worse than what teams..not team.

  28. shanydawg says: Jul 7, 2014 4:10 PM

Ya’ have to laugh at the Fins’ apologists here. I was a season ticket holder for almost 30 years before I moved out of Florida so I hold out home more than anyone – but geez, do you have to be clubbed in the head with their record for the last decade and a half to see the writing on the wall. The franchise is broken an no draft party or pre-season prediction is going to amount any any kind of hill of beans.

  29. scmems07 says: Jul 7, 2014 4:16 PM

This site is always good for a few laughs. dolphins are just shy of being a top 15 team. Can’t understand why someone would rank a team who got better at every position that held them back last year including bringing in a young up and coming offensive coordinator and getting better at quite possibly the worst o line in history as a bottom tier team. They beat 4 playoff teams from the afc including ending the Colts home winning streak, but yea, they are only the 31st best team, keep up the great work pft. Unbelievable.

Pretty sure this ranking has everything to do with the Martin issue from last year, pft have been the most vocal of their displeasure and have gone out of their way to keep burying the dolphins because of it as if it was the worst thing to ever happen even though it was a blessing in disguise for the fact they brought in better talent across the o line because of it.

  30. southpaw79 says: Jul 7, 2014 4:26 PM

I have a problem with this ranking, but I can see a bit where PFT is coming from. Looking at all the teams this year, many of them seem middle of the road 6-10 to 8-8 style teams. I know there will be some bad teams, but it is hard to separate the teams from 32-20. That being said I think the Dolphins haven shown enough to be ranked higher than the Browns, Jaguars, Texans, and Titans.

  31. calmincali says: Jul 7, 2014 5:08 PM

A winning record after Martin left is an implosion? That’s probably a bit of a stretch.

  32. politicallyincorrect says: Jul 7, 2014 5:16 PM

entire AFC East is a joke…..

  33. raze12004 says: Jul 7, 2014 5:18 PM

You know this is a bogus ranking system, all you have to do is go to Vegas and see if they let you bet that the Dolphins are the 31 ranked team. Pretty sure they have them a little higher.

  34. joserodriguez1411 says: Jul 7, 2014 5:25 PM

    GO, GOGO….ALL THE WAY TO 31 SPOT….
I HAVE BEEN A LIFE LONG FIN FAN BUT WITH NOTHING TO CHEER FOR IN 13 YEAR WHO CARE 31 OR 32 SOUNDS GOOD TO ME..PLEASE COME BACK LeBron IT’S ALL THAT MATTERS IN MIAMI

  35. jaykubs says: Jul 7, 2014 5:29 PM

8-8 last year to 31st in your power rankings. great analysis, fellas.

  36. slick50ks says: Jul 7, 2014 5:32 PM

The best thing the Dolphins have going for them is that the faiders are still in the league.

The o-line is worse than last years terrible line. The QB is a continuing project, and last years #1 pick is suspended, and is a possible bust. The running game is questionable, and the WR corp is reliant on an overpaid headcase. And while the defense is decent at times, they still get beat up by teams like the Bills.

I don’t see anything but a last place finish in the East.

  37. TheWizard says: Jul 7, 2014 5:40 PM

The Texans, Cowboys, Redskins, Giants, Jaguars should be below Miami until they prove otherwise.

  38. mortwannabe says: Jul 7, 2014 5:56 PM

  40. mksnpcola says: Jul 7, 2014 6:40 PM

  41. stickershocker says: Jul 7, 2014 6:47 PM

They’re ranked 31st because according to the poll 60% of PFTs readers are Dolphins fans and the rest have common sense, so it makes awesome click bait.

  42. alshonbrandontandem says: Jul 7, 2014 6:56 PM

    #30: The Dallas Cowboys

  43. chrisallen3285 says: Jul 7, 2014 6:57 PM

Y’all can keep hating on the Dolphins. The fact of the matter is that there are teams worse than the Dolphins. These preseason power rankings are meaningless. When September comes and the season starts the Dolphins will prove all of the doubters wrong.

  44. sonofad says: Jul 7, 2014 7:11 PM

Will they bother ranking the Vikings this year?

  45. monstersmasher says: Jul 7, 2014 7:31 PM

How everyone forgets Miami beat New England, Pittsburgh, Indianapolis, Cincinnati, Atlanta, San Diego. but will never forget Miami lost the last two games of the year. With a chance to clinch a playoff birth in the last two weeks of the season is far better than many teams. Plus no one dealt with the distraction of the Johnathan Martin Debacle. No team faced a bigger distraction than Miami and still with two weeks left in the season they were sitting better than most teams. Oh my, but they lost the last two games, they must be terrible almost the worst. HOGWASH!

  46. jcampol says: Jul 7, 2014 10:05 PM

Didn’t you morons have the same ranking for this team last year? I mean seriously you can feel how ever you would like about the dolphins but just to look at them analytically as a football team to say they are the 2nd to worst team in the nfl makes you look like an idiot. I admit to being a dolphin homer but my god they aren’t close to being that bad. Get over yourselves and do a touch of actual game footage research it might help your public perception

  47. fmc651 says: Jul 7, 2014 11:06 PM

the coach with the empty inverted sack can’t help the ranking. The guy is a loser, why the dolphins hired this guy is not understood. He is up there with Schwartz the Lions fired.

  48. finz4eva says: Jul 8, 2014 12:01 AM

As long as Philbin is still walking around picking up gum wrappers we should be no higher than 30th.

  49. monstersmasher says: Jul 8, 2014 10:06 AM

don’t let these guys get to you, they really don’t have a clue about football. How is it that a team that comes one victory away from being in the playoffs is the second worst team in the league? Go figure that one out.

  50. iman62 says: Jul 8, 2014 10:19 AM

Wrong last year, sure they will be wrong again this year. They improved the line, how could you not put this team mid 20s at least?

  51. monstersmasher says: Jul 8, 2014 10:29 AM

WOW ! I say WOW!!! Who are these incredible idiots that voted!!! The dolphins had the most distractions of any team in the NFL last year with that whole Johnathan Martin fiasco, the scrutiny and interruptions thru the year for players to be interviewed and losing two O-Linemen not just one and still managing to beat four, yes four play off teams, Indianapolis, New England, Cincinnati, and San diego. With two games left and only having to win one and they are in the playoffs. How do you morons rank a team that has improved significantly in the off season with the acquisitions of Courtland Finnegan, Louis Delmas to an already tough defense and then adding Brendan Albert (all pro) lineman and Knowshon Moreno with Juwan James to the offense, to a team that barely missed the playoffs. Wow I amazed at your ignorance of football. Don’t quit your day jobs and please where did you steal your journalism degrees?

  52. Bouncer Criss says: Jul 8, 2014 10:41 AM

this must be a bunch of Dolphins fans commenting because the Dolphins where atrocious last year, and did very little to improve over the off season. 6-10 team at best this year.

My best friend is a die hard Phins fan and I hear the same crap every year “we are making the playoffs”. Stop thinking with your heart, because they stink again this year.

  53. oraclepz1 says: Jul 8, 2014 10:46 AM

IF the writers at PFT think this then i would love to have them put their money where their mouth is. Ill put 100$ against any and every writer willing to take this bet that the Fins dont finish below 31st in the league. Im almost sure that none of the these so called “writers” are willing to take this bet. If you dont gamble then im willing to make concessions. Like maybe writing a positive article about the dolphins for once or writing an article how admitting how everyone who ranked the team this low is a complete buffoon. Only way this ranking becomes a reality is if the entire dolphins team gets lost in the bermuda triangle and even then we will still be better than that bottom 3 teams.. SMH

so which is it? are you guys at PFT willing to wager????

  54. shanydawg says: Jul 8, 2014 11:01 AM

Sandwiched between “Fins Eye Super Bowl” headlines is “Fins Pre-Season #31″… hilarious! zzzzz… wake me up when someone puts some pads on.

  55. monstersmasher says: Jul 8, 2014 11:21 AM

The vote by PFT is the most amazing display of football ignorance I have ever witnessed, and the most embarrassing effort of journalism displayed to mankind. Are these voters expected to have any knowledge of football? The Dolphins have improved significantly since last year. The defensive signings of Courtland Finnegan, Louis Delmas and Earl Mitchell to an already stout defense. The signing of pro bowl tackle Branden Albert, along with Shelley Smith, Daryn Colledge, Knowshon Moreno, Jarvis Landry and Juwan James make them much improved. The dolphins beat four play off teams last year, Indianapolis, New England, Cincinnati, and San Diego. Even while undergoing the scrutiny of the NFL during most of the regular season plus losing two O-linemen as well as player interruptions for interviews by the NFL over the whole Johnathan Martin fiasco, they still manage to be in the playoff hunt to the end of the very last game of the season. Explain to me you idiots, how do you go from almost being in the playoffs to the second worst team in the NFL ?

Thank you for this rating PFT! I want us to be the underdog in every game, especially the first game. Please report how we will be trounced by N.E. Belichick will not have seen the full offense yet, we beat them last year in Miami, and with Wake and Vernon rested and ready to punish Brady, I can’t wait for this game!
Pick against us all year please.

  59. roboot8 says: Jul 10, 2014 9:42 AM

Lmao fins fans are pathetic. Stop referencing last season’s “almost AFC playoff berth” as if it gives you some credibility to say anything… You couldn’t even beat the damn JETS at home to get into the playoffs and you finished 3rd in a weak division. I will admit this ranking is a little surprising… However don’t be surprised at the end of the season if the team finishes with 5-6 wins at the bottom of the AFC East. Philbin is a terrible coach, plain and simple.

  60. 1uniquename says: Jul 11, 2014 9:08 AM

This ranking shows how little these so called “experts” know about the NFL. They rank the Dolphins in the bottom every pre season and every year the Dolphins are in the middle of the pack, which i’m not saying is a good thing but it’s better than 31 thats for sure. To be honest though if the Dolphins dont make the playoffs and win a game or two at least in the playoffs i’d rather see them rank 31 than 18.
