Tyrann Mathieu: Josh Gordon has to figure it out for himself

Arizona Cardinals safety Tyrann Mathieu is all too familiar with working through drug-related issues.

Mathieu was kicked off the football team at LSU prior to the 2012 season due to “a violation of team rules” that stemmed from repeated drug test failures. Mathieu entered a drug rehabilitation program and ultimately declared himself eligible for the 2013 NFL Draft, where he was selected in the third round by the Cardinals.

Cleveland Browns receiver Josh Gordon is reportedly facing a one-year suspension for repeated violations of the NFL’s substance-abuse policy. While he is appealing that decision, Gordon was also arrested in North Carolina over the weekend for a DUI.

Mathieu appeared on NFL Network’s “Total Access” show on Tuesday and said ultimately Gordon is going to have to figure things out for himself.

“Well, me having been through it, and having a little bit of experience with that, I don’t think anybody in the world can possibly tell him anything,” Mathieu said. “No one could tell me anything when I was going through it. I had to figure that out for myself.

“Hopefully, he will get the point. Hopefully, he will get the message. But, most of the time it takes people to hit rock bottom for them to start believing in themselves, and start seeking help. A lot of people could reach out to you, but that doesn’t mean you always take that help, take that advice. He just has to want it for himself.”

While he admits it’s still a process, Mathieu has managed to get his life turned in the right direction. It remains to be seen when, and if, Gordon is able to get his own life figured out.

It’s called growing up! I myself got kicked out of college and sent to rehab at 19 years old for abusing hard drugs. I’m not trying to say that recovering from the addiction isn’t an important step. But the biggest part of your recovery (at that age) is learning self-control and how to grow up. You have to be a man and take responsibility for your actions without making excuses or blaming everything on the substances.

Mathieu is right. Gordon has to decide his future. Justin Blackmon and Mike Goodson are most likely done as NFL players. Gordon must get his life in order first, if he never plays a down in the NFL again so be it.

Tyrann Mathieu…your opinion matters in what human possible way in this matter?

“Mathieu has managed to get his life turned in the right direction.”

Well with multiple failed tests in the NCAA, and not even a season in the NFL, maybe you should worry about yourself and your team as opposed to commenting on others more proven than yourself.

The Browns should do the right thing by Josh Gordon and cut him immediately.

Mathieu is correct in saying that a person sometimes needs to hit rock bottom before seeking help for themselves.

Going by what has been reported since the draft there appears to be a strong possibility they will have a similiar decision to make in the near future regarding Johhny Manziel.

The clock is ticking on DUI #1 already.

Amazing such a mature statement from Mathieu. It is really impressive how he has turned his life around. I’m very happy for him. Not a Cardinals fan, just a football fan. Glad to see he has gotten his priorities in order. I hope Manziel and Gordon can as well.

I hope Mathieu can keep it clean. He was a lot of fun to watch last year and may have been the defensive steal of the draft.

has to be THE DUMBEST statement of the day.
    shows,
1-gordon isn’t a proven anything with only one season under his belt. but he played. mathieu injured
2- the man didnt even play a full season. he was suspended two games.
3- mathieu got picked up in the NFL draft. Gordon. the supplemental draft.. hmmm, Matheiu injured is the only reason he didnt play a full season. Gordon……drugs.
4-Mathieu on the verge of playing this year. Gordon-on the verge of being suspended.

    Soooo,
Gordon supp. draft / mathieu 3rd rd (avg Mathieu)
Gordon failed NFL drug test / Mathieu no test failed in the NFL yet (avg Mathieu)
Gordon suspended 2 games / mathieu IR (avg Gordon)
Gordon on the verge of NOT playing the 2015 season / Mathieu on the verge of playing (avg Mathieu)
Gordon off field issue dealing with a DWI / Mathieu…nothing (avg Mathieu)
