Jim Leonhard has had conversations with the Packers about 2014 season

The Packers drafted Ha Ha Clinton-Dix in the first round this year, but they may not be done adding at safety.

Former Bills, Ravens, Jets and Broncos safety Jim Leonhard wants to continue playing this season and the Wisconsin native told WQOW that he has spoken to his home state’s team about donning their uniform.

“It would mean a lot, but we’ve had a lot of conversations with teams, Green Bay being one of them,” Leonhard said, via CheeseheadTV.com. “They’re a great organization, I’d love to play for them but it hasn’t worked out up to now. You never know what can happen in the future, but we’ll see. They’re a great organization and it’s always fun to see the fans and have a lot of family that follows them closely.”

Leonhard played all 16 games for the Bills last season, starting seven times and picking off four passes. The Packers have Morgan Burnett back from last year to go with Clinton-Dix and Micah Hyde, who has made the move from cornerback, so there’s not a particularly pressing need for another safety. That explains why nothing has worked out up to now and why Leonhard, who is also an experienced punt returner, may have to look elsewhere if he’s going to play in 2014.

Zero chance Leonhard signs with Green Bay.

Ted Thompson doesn’t sign 30+ safeties.

  2. jafo1265 says: Jul 13, 2014 1:24 PM

He would be more valuable as a punt returner.

  3. thevikesarebest says: Jul 13, 2014 1:31 PM

I expect anything to be an upgrade on that tasteless defense.the three stooges would be better than what the packers have at safety or corner.just another reason Turdbay will be looking up at the vikings next season and beyond.SKOL

I was excited to see Leonhard back with the Bills last year … BUT it is obviously time to see Duke Williams and Meeks more at Safety …

In my opinion he would definitely fit in with the Packers as a Veteran presence as well as a hard working Special Teams guy. The guy leads by example.

  5. sterlingrodgers says: Jul 13, 2014 1:40 PM

    Can he still dunk?

  6. ccc23454 says: Jul 13, 2014 1:43 PM

good ball player just not a “star”, great fill in and sure tackler. good team guy with a great heart and football mind just not as gifted athletically as many players, makes up for it other ways. he will play this year for some team, coaches love him.

  7. realwischeese says: Jul 13, 2014 1:58 PM

Leonhard would only be considered if….there is an injury to one of the safeties. Having him as a back up punt returner as well as a safety is valuable. And to the troll Vikings fan…The Packers have the best 3 corners in the game-Shields, Williams and Hayward. With Dix and Burnett as starting safeties, I wouldn’t trade those 5 for any other 5 in the NFL Who are the Vikings DB’s????

Ah yes coming from what a fan of the best NFL team with a defense worse than the Packers
I guess when you star embraces the Suck and goes to a team that stands a chance in the NFC north it hurts
Just think if history repats itself your team could be in the League for 700 more years and then the Vikings would equal the # of Championships the Packers now have
Your 1 in 54 years ain’t to special
So as all other fans do we have a hearty SKOLOL at your expense

Not only a Wisconsin native, but a UW player as well. Agreed that he is a bit long in the tooth for TT, but it would be cool for Wisconsin fans to have another Wisconsin native in the green and gold. The season is about to get under way, so why don’t you viking trolls just back off and let teams do the talking for you. Oh, that’s right, that is when your season comes crashing down. So nothing to talk about once the season starts. GO PACKERS!!!

  11. ariani1985 says: Jul 13, 2014 2:53 PM

Look at the bright side, at least he is not a Ted Thompson typical Draft bust!

  12. cheeseisfattening says: Jul 13, 2014 3:00 PM

Why in the world would anyone want to join a soft defense that even their own QB now admits has been soft all along? If this happens it is because Leonhard has no other options and this would be the only way to play another year.

  13. bobnelsonjr says: Jul 13, 2014 3:17 PM

I love the way he returns kicks.
He runs straight up field and doesn’t dance around.
Ted likes the bottom 10 roster spots to be for developmental guys.

Leonhard has been fighting racial discrimination his entire career, he deserves a roster spot somewhere.

  14. robert831 says: Jul 13, 2014 3:34 PM

@realwischeese -“The Packers have the best 3 corners in the game-Shields, Williams and Hayward” -What the heck are you talking about?? Seriously not a single one of these guys is on anyones top 5 list or even top 10 list.

  15. gargamelsmentor says: Jul 13, 2014 3:48 PM

4 teams in 7 years….not something you put on a resume.

  16. rho1953 says: Jul 13, 2014 4:08 PM

thevikesarebest, whassup? Are you polishing the glass in that monstrous, empty trophy case? How many NFC north crowns is it for the Packers now? Three in a row, right? How did your Vikequeens do last year? You may have spent too much time in your ice shack last year with inadequate ventilation. That would be the only explanation for how you think a team with ZERO titles could be the best.

  17. stellarperformance says: Jul 13, 2014 4:21 PM

Are the Packer-hating Viking trolls really that stupid? Really? Every insult and putdown of the Packers acknowledges the Vikings being WORSE at nearly every position, with the exception of running back (barely.) Honestly, they should all be thankful that stupidity isn’t painful, or they would be hurting big time. Wow.

  18. jimmysee says: Jul 13, 2014 4:24 PM

He’s always outperformed expectations — going back to his days as a Badger.

Packers could use an experienced return man.

  19. greej1938l says: Jul 13, 2014 4:34 PM

    Yeah…Viking fans should talk….never……win first

  20. joker65 says: Jul 13, 2014 4:51 PM

8-7-1….barely above .500. Horrid defense. 5 of the top 6 defenses in the NFL are in the NFC. (Seattle, Carolina, SF, Arizona, NO) GB may win the North because its putrid, but thats about it.

  21. txpackfan77 says: Jul 13, 2014 5:17 PM

Good tackler, but how much speed does he have left? Don’t see them bringing him in for returns since they have Abbrederis, who I hope exceeds expectations and becomes the number 3 or 4 WR. Even so, Abbrederis still probably be doing returns where he is more susceptible to getting hurt.

  22. dgt178 says: Jul 13, 2014 5:57 PM

    ……viqueen trolls = jealous, packer-emulating fools

  23. universalchurchoftruth says: Jul 13, 2014 6:03 PM

That’s right, Rodgers was quoted as saying the Packer’s D is soft.

“some of the battles we’ve had with our division teams at times – where you walk on the field and feel like you’re kind of a JV team.”

Talk about having a divided locker room this fall!

  24. cobaltdriver says: Jul 13, 2014 6:08 PM

Where’s Turdbay? Is it in Minneapolis or just outside the city limits?

It’s on Lake Minnetonka, they ve had a lot of sewage going in there this year..with the flooding and all

  25. The Almighty Cabbage says: Jul 13, 2014 6:21 PM

Take it easy on the Viking troll kids. They’ll be back in their parents’ basements playing World Of Warcraft as soon as the Vikings go in the tank. This will be somewhere between week 3 and week 6. THEN who are we going to laugh at?

  26. pkrlvr says: Jul 13, 2014 6:25 PM

Coincidentally thevikesarebest and arian1985 both like to use the word turd a lot and are the only two trolls I’ve seen on here refer to GB as turdbay. Not to mention they both ignorantly blast gb’s defense while being totally oblivious to the fact that we were ranked 6 spots higher last year defensively than the vikes. Ariani, how many accounts do you actually have here? Be honest.

  27. whatjusthapped says: Jul 13, 2014 6:27 PM

Its not Thompson’s style to sign age 30+ players on the downside of their career. Backup spots are typically given to younger players to come on and develop.

It seems to work given their 3 straight NFC North divisional crowns. Given Harrison’s injury history, Leonard might want to consider signing over there. No playoffs, no realistic chance of the playoffs and a last place finish await but heck, its an NFL paycheck.

  28. grnngold says: Jul 13, 2014 7:45 PM

If the Queen trolls get you down and want a good laugh go on Youtube and bring up “Viking fans reaction to Favre’s interception to Porter in the NFC playoff”. I get tears laughing every time I watch it!!!

  29. tokyosandblaster says: Jul 13, 2014 7:59 PM

    Safety depth would be nice.

The secondary got burned quite a bit last year.

Granted, not as badly as Minnesota, but they can’t be the measuring stick.

Literally every team’s defense is better than the Vikings’.

  30. thegreatjimbrown says: Jul 13, 2014 8:25 PM

“Seriously not a single one of these guys is on anyones top 5 list or even top 10 list.” Wrong.

It’s too early for Hayward, though 6 picks as a rookie is better than any other CB around. But, yes, both Tramon Williams and Sam Shields were considered by many to be top 10 NFL CBs at the end of 2013.

  31. icebowler says: Jul 13, 2014 8:58 PM

After the microphone was turned off, he told WQOW that he prays every night that no Vikings Safety’s get hurt in camp. Who want’s to get dressed in Purple & Puke every Sunday?… he was heard saying under his breath.

  32. numberoneinthehoodg says: Jul 13, 2014 9:10 PM

They can’t agree on stock options?

  33. stellarperformance says: Jul 13, 2014 9:54 PM

There aren’t any stock options left. All sold. All 360,000 shares. That’s 3-6-o THOUSAND. Try and beat that with $1.99 Viking key chains. Maybe you can help fund several boxes of urinal cakes for the new stadium. Word is you guys are in to that sort of thing.

  34. revelation123 says: Jul 14, 2014 12:17 AM

The Packers are just doing their due diligence. They’ll probably only sign Leonard if something happens to a safety they already have.

  35. numberoneinthehoodg says: Jul 14, 2014 1:33 AM

$1.99 key chain is still worth more than…………..Bring your putrid green and god awful yellow to the new stadium. It should be cheap, you hillbillies still do that right? Losers!

  36. jimatmad says: Jul 14, 2014 7:37 AM

Lifelong Packer fan (and recent owner), as well as a Badger fan here. While I’d love to see Jim Leonhard in the Green and Gold, it’s really not Ted Thompson’s style.
There are only so many roster slots, and Leonhard would be coming in as a backup safety/ punt returner at 31 years old.
Too bad there isn’t a player/ coach spot for somebody you want around as an example on how to play the game.

  37. ck44sps says: Jul 14, 2014 10:51 AM

People He would be a back-up and would be a good mentor for HAHA. Probably sign a 1 year deal for the league minimum.

Just want to give you “Super intelligent Viking fans” some knowledge about Ted Thompsons draft busts. In the year the Packers won the Super Bowl, Ted Thompson drafted 49 of the 53 on the roster. It’s draft and develop, something Ted has always believed in and the proof is in the pudding there guys. Still have the most guys drafted on roster by far. Stop making yourselfs look stupid guys, have a little respect for your rivals. Sure we don’t like eachother, but don’t be ignorant.
