The Jets land at No. 19 in PFT’s preseason power rankings

AP

The Jets said goodbye to their previous would-be savior at quarterback early in the offseason when they parted ways with Mark Sanchez, a move that cut ties with the good and bad of his four years as the team’s starter while making the key to a successful 2014 season all the more obvious.

The Jets need a consistent and reliable quarterback if they are going to be a consistent playoff participant and they aren’t sure if they have one. The hope is that Geno Smith can build off a rough rookie season thanks to the push he’ll receive from Michael Vick this summer, but it’s hard to find too many strong predictions that things will play out that way.

There’s more certainty about the quality of the offensive talent around the quarterbacks this year, though. Adding Eric Decker, Chris Johnson and Jace Amaro gives the Jets a much deeper group of options at skill positions to go with a defense that did a very good job on the way to last year’s 8-8 record. Even a modest bump in production at quarterback would give the Jets the right to think about the playoffs, so the pressure is on for those trying to provide it.

For now, though, the jury is out and that leaves the Jets in pretty much the same middle of the pack position they were in to end last season. Our PFT panel has voted them into the 19th spot on our preseason power rankings, but we want to know what you think as well. Check out the preview and then cast your vote below.

  1. I think you have this about right. Don’t see them regressing, but making them a playoff team may be premature.

The Jets are polarizing. People seem to really hate them or love them. They’re not my team, but I see a lot of improvement on offense and a defense that shouldn’t slide.

I will not be shocked if they do make the playoffs.

  2. This is the worst ranking so far by a long shot. This team will be very lucky to go 6-10. Lack of talent and coaching should have put this team maybe at #27-29.

  3. Interesting to see what Geno can do with more offensive talent. I could see the Jets pulling a 9-7 and second in the AFC East.

  4. The team that lost to the Bills by 3 TDs coming off of a bye week is ranked 9 spots ahead of them?

    Nice!

Second place in the AFC East won’t be close to .500.

    That division sucks outloud.

  6. The jets won almost every single close game last year. They also gave up 100 more point than they scored.
They also allowed more yards per attempt than they themselves gained.
Every single stat you can look at from last year says the Jets were a fraud 8-8 team that got lucky almost every time they needed to. Think about the Lavante David personal foul that snatched defeat from the jaws of victory.

  7. This whole preseason rankings thing you guys are doing is ridiculous and other than 1 or 2 of your picks has been so far off base as to be laughable

  8. Only one reason Jets are 12 spots ahead of Dolphins: Florio hates Philbin, and Bullygate, which of course was last year. How the Jets rank 12 spots ahead of another team who knows who its QB is when the Jets do not know who their QB is, is beyond me. Quite frankly I see the Bills as a better team than Jets, and Jets are 9 spots ahead of them. I am so glad Florio only gets to punish Dolphins in the media, not on the field.

  9. They got better at WR. Ford and Decker are upgrades but by no means is either a legitimate one. Deckers stats were inflated from playing with Manning and a bunch of other targets playing around him. He’s good just not a true #1. Johnson could be a good edition or he can just be another RB who peaked and began his slide. They added a rookie TE with potential. This team lives and dies with Geno. Vick may play..but how long he eventually will get hurt.

The D will always be a factor with Rex but the key is can the DBs cover.?They didn’t really improve there they basically added a safety in the draft who can hit but is suspect in coverage. 6-9 wins max another ranking that makes no sense.

The Dolphins are a joke. It’s not hate, we’re all laughing at you.

  11. Jets higher than the Lions is an indictment of Detroit’s entire front office, because aside from Wilkerson Muhammad, I can’t name a single position where New York is more talented than Detroit.

  12. Perfect rating!!! Jets 10-6 EAZY lol Bills beat the Jets by 3 lousy Touchdowns in three years lol wow!!! How’s Pinko oh, mean Kinko doing these days? Can’t wait to see him on the field!! Oh, he blew out his knee I forgot, my bad lol! The fish are to involved in calling each other names so they won’t be a factor and besides Tannyhill is a pretender not a contender! Is that how his name is spelled? lol

  13. Hey lks311 try the entire D Line!! Much better the the Lions!! And I love Sui!!!!! To
Bad he’s not a Jet! What a wast of a talent!! But I’m happy with Snacks! Oh, and the Defensive Rookie of the year lol Lions lol lol that’s the best lol lol

  14. jet haters are all clowns the team was 8-8 with terrible qb play so a rational thinking person says with additional weapons on the o it has to be better. rex is not going anywhere and with a few exception he is better that whoever coaches your team. and to the blind bills fan I guess you didnt watch the first jets bills game where you guys got smoked badly. they beat teams they werent supposed to beat and lost some stinkers

  15. Will the reason the hate the Jets bigjoe2269 is because there teams suck! Look a guy with his name is referencing the Falcons lol All ya need to know!!

  16. Every power ranking this year has been terrible. In this case, the Jets are nowhere close to being in the top 20 when they should be ranked close to the Browns who are also having pains with consistency.

  17. Really they should have been 9-8 if Stephen Hill doesn’t drop the ball against the Pat’s in week 1! Also if Smith didn’t throw the ball to the opposite team more then he did his own? They would had made the Playoffs!

  18. I have been a J-E-T-S fan since 1968 ( I was 5 then). As I get older and wiser expectations must be tempered. It will be a five win season! The GM neglected the O- line which would have improved the play of all the skill positions. Besides the front 3 on the Defensive side of the ball the rest will not put my beloved Jets in the playoffs. Rex could be out of a job by Halloween. Take a look at the first half of their schedule… Oh and they better beat Oakland in the opener.
    Red zone Ron

  19. . and to the blind bills fan I guess you didnt watch the first jets bills game where you guys got smoked badly. they beat teams they werent supposed to beat and lost some stinkers

Smoked? The Jets won by 7 and we were missing 3 defensive starters. Smoked is what happened later in the year when the Bills smacked them around 37-14. The only delusional fans are gang green. I can admit at least the Bills and the Jets are even at this point. Bills played a lot of close games with a new staff and a ton of young guys. They beat Baltimore and Carolina and would have beat KC on the road if we weren’t starting Jeff Tuel. Talent wise on offense the Bills are way better, better RBs better WRs and a better offensive line. The QBs are both unknowns at this point.

  20. The GM neglected the O- line

Good call. Bad to mediocre teams should always start by beefing up both lines.

  21. How can the Jets finish 9-8 ?

Love the excitement about the franchise whose most memorable moment in franchise history is the Buttfumble.

  22. But according to Rex no one wants to play them cuz there the best team……Rex will be lucky to make it to Thanksgiving…..theres no one left to sacrifice..

  23. Really?!? We’ll see if they even finish at 8-8. I don’t see how they surprise anyone this year. Vick or Geno is not the answer, but what the hell do I know!

  24. I wonder are these rankings based on projected final record or how good the teams really are? By that I mean, does St. Louis get a lower rating because they think their record will be worse than the jets because of who they play, or do they think if the Jets played the Rams, the Jets would be favored? If it is the latter, then what are you smoking??

  25. .
The Jets starting roster is suspect on both sides of the ball. It’s only going to deteriorate after the injuries hit.
    .

  26. Jets have Mike Vick, he is way better that Stafford(Geno Smith is just as good if not better than Stafford)
Eric Decker is like 1 catch behind Calvinthegreat
Reggie Bush, well Reggie pisses me off cause he fumbles a lot and isn’t over getting dumped by Kim K. We all know Chris Johnson is way better than lil Reggie. Suh wishes he could be as good as Sheldon Richardson.

Sounds to me like the Jets belong ahead of my loser Lions, but It’s a wonderful life! Blow Lions Blow!

  27. pollster confused by criteria…
this was supposed to be worst teams not records
Jets overvalued due to extremely weak division and AFC

no way Jet are better than…. Lions, Redskins, Rams, Houston, Vikings…..

    bad poll

  28. last year when most were sure the would be lucky to win 3 or 4 games I said 8 to 10 didn`t count on Gene being the man. but still those of you that still think they are a 3 or 4 win team ,go and become an football analyst you have the smarts lol lol ONLY JET FANS KNOW WHAT THE JETS CAN DO. the rest of you guys just believe what you hear and read.

  29. The Jests are going nowhere until they get a new HC who balances both Offense and Defense.
Rex is as unable as his father to understand that concept.

  30. Keep seeing posts how the Raiders aR going to beat the Jets week one, Raiders will be lucky not to lose by double digits. The most pathetic organization of the last 20 years, Vikings, Redskins, Bills, Browns, and the lions. At least the Jets have been somewhat relevant in the last 20 years. Your teams have just outright sucked.

  31. The hate against the Jets is comical. Fans of others teams run to make a post on any and all Jets articles. The circus nonsense is old and unoriginal. Jokes about Rex’s love of feet, or the buttfumble are tired as well.

The reality is, the Jets have a string D. They won 8 games when all the “experts” predicted 3 wins. If (a big if), the Jets can run the ball with authority… they will win 9 games. So all of the Bills, pats, and fins fans reading this… please proceed to downvote me!

That’s funny. Everyone, and I mean everyone, said they Jets weren’t going to win more than 4 games last year, and now they won’t win more than 6? Sanchez goes down, leaves the team to a rookie QB, with no offensive help. Plus, a defense that lost their leader, and a rookie trying to fill his shoes. Low and behold, they finished the season at 8-8, winning 3 of the last 4, missing the post season by 1 more win. They only got better in the off-season, and I think they’re second year players (Geno included) will play better this year. They will do no worse this year, and I even believe they’ll do better, and make it back to the post season.

  33. Lol, the Bills and the Jets aren’t and never will be equal. Listen to ’em, they finally beat us and they start to chirp. Here’s the facts: Jets fans have been putting down “W’s” whenever they see the Bills on the schedule for the past decade and by and large they haven’t been disappointed at all. Buffalo has been the Jets whipping boy for years! I remember going to the 2010 Week 17 game against the Bills, where our backup squad toasted the best Buffalo could throw at them. The game was so out of hand so quick that when I got up leave the stadium we scored a touchdown, and before I could even leave the building we scored ANOTHER touchdown.

Bills fans should spend less time talking smack about better teams than theirs on the internet and spend more time worrying which team they’re going to follow when the Bills move because nobody cares about Buffalo.
