Two Roc Nation execs will take the NFLPA exam

JayZ AP

The sports agency owned by Jay Z currently has one in-house NFLPA-certified agent.  That number could soon be trebled/tripled/whatever.

According to Liz Mullen of SportsBusiness Journal, Roc Nation Sports president Juan Perez and Roc Nation Sports vice president Rick Kleiman will take the annual NFLPA certification test later this month.

The fact that they’re taking the test presumably means they satisfy the educational requirements to represent NFL players in their contract negotiations.  Jay Z doesn’t, and he has shown no inclination since becoming a sports agent to obtain NFLPA certification.

Technically, Jay Z and other employees without NFLPA certfication can have only limited involvement in the efforts of Roc Nation Sports to recruit NFL players to choose Roc Nation for the purposes of negotiating with NFL teams.  Last year, Jay Z seemed to make a mockery of that provision in connection with the recruitment of Jets quarterback Geno Smith to sign with Kim Miale, who had been hired by Roc Nation Sports to negotiate NFL player contracts.  The NFLPA ultimately concluded that no rules were broken.

As an attorney who’s looking to be a sports agent.

Roc Nation sounds like an amateur organization started by a man who has too much money and time on his hands.

Yet, I would absolutely join it if I had the chance.

For some reason, N.W.A. comes to mind when hearing about this organization.

This is a fun pet project for Jay Z, but this hasn’t really taken off yet, and I doubt it will ever be viewed very seriously.

But Ricky Williams’ agent was Master P

I’d be curious to know how the contracts ROC Nation is negotiating compare to other contracts for similar type players. Sure, Jay Z probably has no clue about negotiating contracts. But, successful men know how to hire those that do know how to get things done.

It’s a good thing it’s an exam and not a wonderlic test.

Based on your idiotic and inflamitory posts I’m shocked you’re even pretending to suggest you’re an attorney. If you really are an attorney (no way in hell) I wouldn’t hire you to clear up a parking ticket, let alone negotiate a NFL contract.

I don’t get why anyone would question wanting to be with this firm?

The CBA’s structure contracts to at least have a solid starting point so an agent really just needs to learn how to squeeze as many $’s as possible and how many agencies have the marketing arm that is formed simply by putting the term Roc in front of it? Not to many. If wanted he can get these players in front of many people and money making opportunities they’d probably never see with Bus Cook or some other old guy.

Most young guys wants to be stars a very close second to football players.

They could at least give their agency a professional sounding name. What the heck is a “Roc”?

Might as well get ICP to represent you..

You actually have to have a law degree or MBA to be an agent.

Jay Z is a genius. He knows so many kids are going to sign with him just because he is Jay Z. He’ll get a cut of every single contract.

I dont see why an entrepreneur like jay z should have to taken this exam when he can hire a bunch of lawyers and suits to do it. These weird laws are just there to make it difficult for new comers. Less competition!
