Cowboys finally release Kyle Orton

Kyle Orton AP

The Cowboys apparently saw enough of Brandon Weeden to make them willing to eat the money.

According to Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network, the Cowboys have informed veteran quarterback Kyle Orton he will be released.

The Cowboys held out hope the veteran backup would return, and that he might retire (at which point he’d owe them $3 million in signing bonus). But when he skipped veteran minicamp (incurring $70,000 worth of fines) it was clear he wasn’t bluffing.

Now, they’ll roll with Weeden behind Tony Romo, who is coming off back surgery.

Yeah Cowboys season over if Romo goes down.

  2. bassplucker says: Jul 15, 2014 5:34 PM

This means Orton still gets paid, right? And can shop his services to another team.

    HUGE win for Orton.

Whoa boy! You should have talked to some Browns people first. Weeden will break your heart. He will talk the talk but he will never walk the walk.

He will sign with the Bears to back up Cutler. You heard it here first.

Meanwhile in Washington, The best Quarterback in the Sport, Mr. Griffin the 3rd, keeps installing Jay Gruden’s championship gameplan day by day. Even Kirk Cousins and Colt McCoy are better than Tony “Rob Jackson” Romo! #LombardiNumber4iscoming

    Nice backup plan there, guys.

Just wrap up Romo in bubble wrap and hope that his back doesn’t snap in two anyway.

  10. kennyadler1 says: Jul 15, 2014 5:38 PM

Its a win-win for Jerry….if Romo stays healthy the team will be “competitive” and he will sell tickets….if Romo gets hurt then Cowboys get a top 5 draft pick to nab Winston, Mariotta or Hundley in 2015 draft…..from a Bears fan

  11. baddegg says: Jul 15, 2014 5:38 PM

Where will Kyle Orton now be taking his talents?

  12. 4thquartermagic says: Jul 15, 2014 5:39 PM

Look at Kyle. Got paid millions (including $5 million in bonus money) to make 1 start in two years.

Now he can retire at 32 with his brain in tact.

    Respect that hustle.

  13. kcflake says: Jul 15, 2014 5:40 PM

Orton should have stayed with the Chiefs. Could have been a good match.

No, Orton does not get paid. His salary this season was not guaranteed, therefore, when the Cowboys cut him he loses the money. $3.25 million.

Orton does retain his signing bonus, but, he doesn’t earn anything from Dallas this season.

Personally, I don’t understand why Dallas released him. No way I would let him go. Let him fail to report to TC, then put him on ‘Reserve, did not report’. He won’t count against the 90 (or 56) man roster and he won’t get paid. Then again Jerry doesn’t seem to be as spiteful as I am. I would have put Ratlif on IR and let him rot last year.

Doing it this way Dallas realizes an immediate ~ $1mil bump in their 2014 salary cap (difference between his salary and remaining prorated bonus) and suffers no ‘dead money’ in 2015.

he is an interesting one. pretty much every capable QB wants to start in the NFL. he was completely content taking a big paycheck to sit on the bench. I actually believe he was happier there than when he had to start for a couple years.

Kyle really was the perfect backup to Romo

  29. firecracker87 says: Jul 15, 2014 6:29 PM

I would love to see sweet poetic justice….Orton goes to some team and becomes an elite QB. – one can dream eh?

  30. phaktor333 says: Jul 15, 2014 6:29 PM

Granted Weeden is may not the ideal from first glance, I always give a two year mulligan to QBs that have been drafted and traded/released from that toxic environment created by the Browns organization. Heck, you also never know how he will perform throwing to his go to guy in college.

  31. ubepunkedagain says: Jul 15, 2014 6:29 PM

I thought it was hilarious that Norv Turner put all his eggs in the Weeden basket last year. That guy looked so helpless and lost out on the field. It had to be embarrassing.

  32. coltzfan166 says: Jul 15, 2014 6:33 PM

This is interesting. Should be a top story

  33. cowboysfan72 says: Jul 15, 2014 6:33 PM

What you guys are forgetting is that he was thinking of retiring anyway so why in the hell would you want a guy like that to come back to ur team when he wouldn’t play worth a damn anyway. And besides if you look at Weeden in Cleveland the dude didnt stand a chance with all the different head coaches & offensive coordinator that that team had nobody could’ve played with all that confusion.

  34. jayfish6402 says: Jul 15, 2014 6:34 PM

Orton is probably now the best free agent quarterback, with second being Josh Freeman. Injuries always happen, so Orton should have a team next year. The only concern about him is if he retires, but I think a team with a quarterback struggle that needs a quarterback like the Browns or the Texans could always get him before the regular season begins.

  35. rexgrossman8 says: Jul 15, 2014 6:36 PM

I would love it if the Cowboys signed Rex Grossman.

  36. Grulks says: Jul 15, 2014 6:52 PM

This reallywas the fair move here for Dallas.

Orton’s “signing” bonus really wasnt the result of a new contract, it was the result of converting his existing salary into a signing bonus so as to provide immediate cap relief a few years ago.

Look at it this way: lets his salary was supposed to be 10 mil for a particular year (using a bigger number for easier illustration purposes only). He converts it to 1 mill base salary, and a signing bonus of 9 mill. He still gets all 10 paid at the same time, but the 9 mill cap value is spread out over the remaining course of the contract.

So Dallas wanting him to pay back the signing bonus is crap. FIRST they sign him to a bad contract. THEN they ask him to restructure bc Jerry and Stephen suck at cap management decisions, and they need relief. THEN they wanted him to pay back money he had already rightfully earned a year or two ago?!

Obviously the numbers are different, but the principle is the same.

This is one Dallas fan who is just sick and tired of JJ’s bufoonery.

  37. fordmandalay says: Jul 15, 2014 6:52 PM

Now the Bucs and Raiders will get into a bidding war for Orton – they seem to love giving crazy money to old, washed up QBs lately.

  38. randy2054 says: Jul 15, 2014 6:55 PM

I think the person that should be most worried about his job right now is Christian ponder. Kyle Orton is far more talented than Mr. ponder and right up there with Matt Cassel’s as well would not be surprised to see Mr. ponder being released or traded for fifth-round draft pick in the future to somebody like St. Louis and Minnesota signing Kyle Orton to compete with Matt Cassels while Teddy Bridgewater develops his skills. Just my two cents

  39. Marshawn Lunch says: Jul 15, 2014 6:56 PM

Kyle Orton to the Houston Texans. No Brainer. He’s an instant improvement over their QB group. Same could be said if Orton went to the Raiders. Oh, or he could go to the Vikings.

    lol

  42. randy2054 says: Jul 15, 2014 7:08 PM

If the Cowboys were going cut out the clubhouse cancer the first amputation IMHO would be Jerry Jones himself! :-)

  43. dallasdominates says: Jul 15, 2014 7:14 PM

Lol Kyle Orton did not want to be paid very handsomely to hold a clipboard. For 3 years.. what makes you think he wants to come in training camp to compete for a starting qb job in a new city team and organization after basically doing nothing since January. ESPECIALLY IN MINNESOTA. .. OUTSIDE. .. In the cold snowy weather.. jeez ….. LMAO

  44. teambolt5000 says: Jul 15, 2014 7:15 PM

Whitehurst is as good a backup QB a team could get, primarily because he was happy to be no more than a clipboard holder. He never questioned his role.
    .
However, having subpar backups can be very risky. It worked for the Chargers because Rivers has never missed a start. Kyle Orton will need to find a similar situation.

INT at the end of a winnable game has got to be in the Cowboys’ playbook. Romo would have thrown the same INT.

So I guess the fines are just empty threats after all? And now if Romo can’t play, they have Weeden. Passing on Manziel is going to haunt them.

  53. bassplucker says: Jul 15, 2014 8:30 PM

He’s a midwestern guy. He has history with the Bears of course, and played college ball at Purdue. Both the Colts and the Bears are quality teams with #1 QBs firmly in place. Either of those teams would be a low pressure backup gig for Orton, so connect the dots. He was willing to give up a lot of coin to be gone from Dallas so that tells me money will not be his primary factor in choosing to sign with another team or just calling it a day altogether.

“Yeah Cowboys season over if Romo goes down”.

Thanks for the post, Captain Obvious.

If ANY starting QB for any team went down, that team’s season would pretty much be over. Having said that, with the offensive weapons on the team, Weeden would likely do no worse than Orton did last season when given his opportunity after Romo was out – See: Eagles/Cowboys week 17 last season.

  58. jsrdc says: Jul 15, 2014 9:57 PM

    @ dallascowboysdishingthereal s

“So I guess the fines are just empty threats after all? And now if Romo can’t play, they have Weeden. Passing on Manziel is going to haunt them.”

#1 – Orton didn’t want to be there, and so be it. The Cowboys decided that they don’t want somebody who doesn’t want to be there – it is called a mutual solution. Besides, Orton certainly didn’t earn his pay, as evidenced by his stellar performance against the Eagles.

#2 – Passing on Manziel is going to hurt them? Have you been reading any headlines, bro? Manziel has been to Vegas twice in the past couple of months, and this most recent time rolling a dollar bill in a bathroom. Yeah, he is going to be a stud in the NFL. Tell me, HOW exactly is “Passing on Manziel” aka Johnny train wreck going to haunt the Cowboys? Jerry passes on him, and gets no credit whatsoever on the early actions of Manziel. Manziel is going to be the next Tim Tebow – an excellent college QB who busts big time in the NFL.

    Go dish your hate elsewhere.

  59. largent80100 says: Jul 15, 2014 10:05 PM

    Quincy Weeden time.

And Jerruh can’t even address Romo’s replacement until 2016 given that the team has no one on defense that can step up.

Commitment to mediocrity until the next decade.

Oh boy…. it’s almost Weeden’s time to shine again. Flail Mary II. And to all those who think Weeden is capable let’s all remember, he looked good last preseason. Then when the season started he was terrible. You can try to blame Cleveland, but just do a search for Brandon Weeden’s career in gif form.

  64. thefirstsmilergrogan says: Jul 16, 2014 2:40 AM

as i had predicted when orton failed to show for ota’s, it was a no win for jerry. it was cheaper to bite the signing bonus money and pay weeden, and in the end it just shows that jerry is an idiot for a g.m. 5 mil signing bonus for kyle orton? 8-8 is optimistic.
