Hernandez cousin pleads guilty to criminal contempt for refusing to testify

Barry Bonds had Greg Anderson.  Aaron Hernandez has Tanya Singleton.

Via the Associated Press, the cousin of the former Patriots tight end and alleged triple murderer has pleaded guilty to criminal contempt arising from her refusal to testify before the grand jury investigating the Odin Lloyd murder case.  Singleton’s lawyer said in court on Monday that she also will plead guilty to criminal contempt in connection with a refusal to testify before the grand jury investigating the July 2012 murders of Daniel de Abreu and Safiro Furtado in Boston.

Singleton continues to maintain her innocence on charges that she served as an accessory after the fact to the murder of Odin Lloyd.

While bad news for Singleton, her refusal to answer questions under oath could be good news for Hernandez, making it harder for prosecutors to prove that he killed anyone.

But Singleton presumably will face criminal contempt charges again when the various murder cases head to trial and Singleton refuses to testify again.  The decision of a family member to refuse to testify could persuade some jurors to think that the accused is guilty — assuming there’s otherwise enough evidence to overcome the standard of proof beyond a reasonable doubt.

Those are the type of people you keep on the pay roll!!!

This is so simple. If they would just change the penalty for refusing to testify in a felony case to the same time of incarceration as a guilty verdict for the accused there would never be a problem. By refusing to testify they have basically become complicit and should pay the same price.

    Problem solved.

Now THAT is family loyalty right there. I don’t care who it is, I’m not going to jail for anybody. If my family wants to commit crimes, they better leave me out the loop. I’m telling everybody!

There’s no reason for silence or suppression of evidence if you have nothing to hide.

This is whats wrong with the system. DA can’t prove he did it so the start charging others because they wont do their job for them. How do you keep a person locked up for over a year before going to trial, I think that if you say someone did a crime the trial should have to start within weeks after the arrest. We all know he did it, just get it over with.

If she strikes a plea deal with the state to testify against Hernandez that will certainly not be good news for him.

That Tanya looks like a MANya…..

  18. mvp43 says: Jul 15, 2014 9:36 AM

If I’m a juror, my first thought is that Hernandez is guilty because she’s not testifying. That’s a no brainer. That, plus the fact the judge will allow the video evidence of Hernandez walking around his home with a gun doesn’t work in his favor.

If she doesn’t testify, she’ll be tried and punished by the court.

If she does testify, she’ll be judged and punished straightaway by Hernandez associates.

This has to be a strategic decision to take the lesser of two evils…

Tanya Singleton must be a very loyal cousin, or a very afraid cousin. I assume that’s her brother in the picture.

  25. nomar8477 says: Jul 15, 2014 10:33 AM

I believe hernandez is as guilty as they come. But a jury cant just assume he must be guilty. They need to be convinced from evidence.

  26. steelerben says: Jul 15, 2014 10:47 AM

Judging from that picture, that doesn’t look like a woman that is scared of prison. She looks like she might be excited about being on the inside.

this is a free country, you shouldn’t have to testify if you don’t want to, its not her job to prove the DAs case
