Rounding the turn: Chargers 16th in PFT’s power rankings

AP

Another day, another AFC West team profiled in PFT’s preseason power rankings.

In our latest installment, we take a closer look at the Chargers, whom the PFT staff has ranked 16th entering the 2014 season. Overall, they are seventh among AFC clubs, per our rankings.

As was the case with the Chiefs — who checked in 17th in our rankings — this would leave the Chargers just outside the playoffs, were the power rankings to hold to form.

This would also leave the AFC West with just one playoff team.

So let’s get to the poll question: how many playoff teams will the AFC West produce? The division did field three postseason entrants a season ago. Give us your take in the comments, and cast your vote(s).

  1. The Raiders have improved, but still aren’t a playoff team. The Chiefs lost half their team to free agency. The Chargers are the Chargers.

None of the teams in the division are as horrible as they used to be, but that just means that the divisonal games will be more evenly split, which will keep three teams from the division out of the playoffs.

The Broncos are the only team from the AFC West you can count on.

  2. .
They play the NFC West in inter-conference play. How much confidence can you have in games against Seattle, SF, Arizona, and upstart St Louis?

You can play well and still lose against those teams.
    .

  3. As a Broncos fan this is the team I worry about, because they’re the only coaching staff that makes halftime adjustments or shows any real in game flexibility.

  4. The Chargers looked pretty good last year. Sixteen seems a bit low? When you think about it, every team in the AFC West is formidable. Except, of course, for the lowly Oakland franchise. Calling them Raiders is insulting to anyone who has ever successfully raided anything.

  5. 16 is a little low but they do have a killer schedule. Their defense has got to be better as could not have been any worse than last year.

Raiders have the most super bowls in the division. last time I checked Super Bowls victories don’t expire

  7. The ranking is too low, the Chargers will contend with the broncos for the division and make it to the AFC championship this year…at least. This is a team trending up.

  8. This is way too high for this repeat under performing show, 22 or 23 is about right for the Chargers

  9. Peyton Manning is the only person from the AFC West you can count on.

FIFY… oh.. and he is only one guy, so when he gets overmatched, you can’t count on him either….

Garbage. Just me or for a team named the chargers does it seem like they’re always about half charged??

The Chargers went to Super Bowl XXIX in Jan 1995. Lost to the 49er’s. So they have been to a Super Bowl

Last time I checked, the Raiders haven’t been relevant for over a decade.

    Live in the now.

  13. The ONLY reason the Chargers made the Post Season is because the Dolphins laid an egg in their final 2 game meltdown against the crappy Bills and Jets. In fact, the Chargers backed in even after the Dolphins had the Tiebreaker over them as they beat them easily in the regular the season. The Dolphins beat every team in the AFC Playoffs on their schedule. I am sure they could have beat the Chiefs too, but not the Broncos. It just goes to show any team in the AFC has a chance. The Colts, Pats, Chiefs and Broncos are all chokers. This year SuperBowl will be 49ers or Seahawks anyway.

  14. Blah blah blah “the only reason they made the playoffs “. Regardless of what you say Lax they still made it and beat the bengals and nearly beat the broncos. Of the 7 losses they had last year 6 of them were by a TD or less. They were in every game they played. Once your in the playoffs records don’t matter neither does fact that you lost to someone in the reg season. Quit crying

But chargersdiehard says it’s their Super Bowl year?!?!? I’m confused now

At least someone pays attention to me. And yes, we are due and in a perfect position to sneak away with one. I feel confident in our roster and coaches now like I did in the LT, Brees days. We held denver to their two lowest offensive games last year regular season and our d has improved in both health and personnel. Rivers could throw for 4000 with guys signed off the street and he finally has a loaded deck of weapons this year. This could be the year that breaks the streak and shuts the haters up.

  16. Oakland and KC are jokes. Everyone was getting blown out by Peyton. Chargers split the series with Denver for the regular season. (In Denver) and lost by a touchdown in the playoffs which was because of conservative play calling
Until the second half. Chargers will be a contender this year.

  17. i think 16 is too low. their offense is guarenteed to be very good and their defense should look better so they are clearly better than last year. not a charger fan at all btw

  18. There was a point in January last year where all but 5 teams had been eliminated. The Chargers were one of those teams. According to PFT they got better in some areas, stayed the same in other areas, but did not get worse in any area.

  19. “Raiders have the most super bowls in the division. last time I checked Super Bowls victories don’t expire”

Nope, they don’t. But you do realize that there is a different owner, different front office, different coaches, and different players than the Raiders who won those Super Bowls, right? The only thing the Raiders have in common with those teams are the uniforms.

49-111 over the past 10 seasons, Super Bowls won three decades ago have ZERO to do with 2014.
