Sketch of a formerly proposed black alternate Vikings jersey emerges

Here’s one for the NFL jersey historians and aficionados.

According to sketches posted by Paul Lukas of Uni-Watch.com, Reebok created a prototype black alternate uniform for the Vikings in 2003. At the time, Reebok was licensed to make NFL jerseys and outfitted Minnesota for the ’03 season. (A hat tip to Deadspin for pointing out the black alternate jersey.)

The Vikings have traditionally worn purple or white jersey tops. The club redesigned its uniforms in 2013, keeping the purple, gold and white color scheme.

Multiple clubs, including the Cardinals, Lions and Eagles, have worn black jerseys over the years. The Vikings haven’t made the leap just yet, though the idea at least made it to the drawing board more than a decade ago.

No. Absolutely not. I’m glad that never happened.

  2. jhein23 says: Jul 15, 2014 11:07 PM

Wearing all black in the most important games would be appropriate for this franchise.

  3. tokyosandblaster says: Jul 15, 2014 11:08 PM

    Losing is the new black?

  4. jaycutlersbarber says: Jul 15, 2014 11:13 PM

I bet it looks just like a vikings uniform…only in black.

  5. thestrategyexpert says: Jul 15, 2014 11:18 PM

Wouldn’t mind seeing the Lions get new jerseys and some silver chrome helmets that mimic the throwback uniform which is awesome, but with some modern edge to really show that things are different now and lustrous.

Vikings, Cardinals, Lions, Eagles… I guess black alternate jerseys are perfect for teams that can’t win a Super Bowl ever.

  9. knew8411 says: Jul 15, 2014 11:33 PM

I saw the sketch, and didnt like it.
I do however have a black, gold, and purple jersey that is much like the verseion depicted in the photograph above with the same except the jersey is black (of course) and the team name is embroidered in gold just under the NFL shield on the collar. It actually looks ok.

Trying to copy the Raiders swag?
No they pirates too, but they vikings, not Raiders. Stick to purple.

  14. vickspuppy says: Jul 16, 2014 12:32 AM

I think a nice shade of “Funeral Black” would be good for this franchise. They already play the funeral march at their practices, their future as as bleak as it gets, and they need to bilk their fan base out of extra cash for their new double-wide stadium.

    The top 5 uniforms:

    1). Notre Dame green jerseys
2). Notre Dame green number white jerseys
    3). Michigan Wolverines
    4). New Seahawks jerseys
    5). Texas A&M
    99+). Minnesota Vikings. Sorry poet

On Uni-Watch, they actually have a term for this sort of thing. BFBS- Black For Black’s Sake. Thankfully, this example never saw the light of day.

  17. FlashPatterson says: Jul 16, 2014 1:13 AM

I have a #12 Dante Culpepper black vikings jersey from back then.

  18. maddenboy says: Jul 16, 2014 2:04 AM

The Vikings have been wearing Dark Blue instead of Purple for a couple decades now.

I guess they think Purple wont sell, or something. That’s a shame.

  19. unlimitedcriticism says: Jul 16, 2014 3:08 AM

The should wear black to mourn the passing of what was left of pftpoet’s mind.

    Cool….I think…

  21. pittsburghdamned says: Jul 16, 2014 3:51 AM

As long as your jersey has purple on it, you’ll always look inferior.

    eg. Baltimore Ravens

  22. gloryfromheaven46 says: Jul 16, 2014 4:02 AM

Almost every team has worn a black jersey, at least half the teams have black in there color scheme already…. Sheesh, is it really that intimidating to players?

  23. garyridgway says: Jul 16, 2014 4:25 AM

Black and Purple sounds like an appropriate color scheme for all the bruises they have been taking over the last 50+ years.

Sorry Vikings fans it was too easy

  24. oriolesvsravens says: Jul 16, 2014 5:45 AM

    Looks like the Jags unis.

  25. staffordsyear says: Jul 16, 2014 6:13 AM

Doesn’t matter, as long as there is purple and gold they will always have the girliest uniforms in the league.

  26. RegisHawk says: Jul 16, 2014 6:27 AM

Black Viking – wasn’t he one of the Avengers?

  31. stellarperformance says: Jul 16, 2014 8:43 AM

People wear black because it makes them appear slimmer or smaller. My goodness, Teddy’s hands would disappear on television.

  32. fdromanowski says: Jul 16, 2014 8:47 AM

Wow! I didn’t realize so many people would care what color uniform players wear. This is one article my 6-year-old daughter can appreciate.

  33. golforepar says: Jul 16, 2014 8:57 AM

No matter what color, it still last place!

  34. Aaron Rodgers Has Tiny Hands says: Jul 16, 2014 9:39 AM

If you have a #12 Culpepper jersey, that would be a collector’s item. I’d frame it and put it next to my #11 Tarkenton jersey.

  35. arnoldziffel says: Jul 16, 2014 9:58 AM

You should have to be able to win some games first, before being allowed to wear black.

Besides, the current Viking jerseys, with the numbers trimmed in purple lace, will do just fine for this team …

  36. jimmyjoejohnbob says: Jul 16, 2014 11:59 AM

Sounds like a really expensive souvenir.

    For a horrible franchise

Man, I’m glad I only paid $200 for my souvenir stock, which helped to renovate one of the most celebrated venues in sports.

Did framing your Fran jersey help plug the metrodome hole?

  38. whatjusthapped says: Jul 16, 2014 1:10 PM

Black should be their official team color, matches the mood of the fan base and the chances of ever getting back to the Superbowl, much less winning that game.

  39. cshearing says: Jul 16, 2014 1:13 PM

Seemingly every team getting black uniforms was one of the worst trends of the 90s. Some idiocy of black being intimidating. Thankfully we did not have another team join the group.

Which celebrated sports venue are you referring to?

I thought the money from the “stock” sale was used to renovate Lambeau field.

You would actually purchase a Culpepper jersey? Then frame it? lol!

  42. Aaron Rodgers has Tiny Hands says: Jul 16, 2014 2:57 PM

Wow, a lot of people quick on the uptake here today. One of the commenters said he had a black #12 Culpepper jersey. I was playfully pointing out that Culpepper wore #11, so a #12 Culpepper jersey would be very rare. Not unlike a #11 Tarkenton jersey, because he wore #10. I do not own these things, nor would I frame them if I did.

  43. 13x Offseason World Champions says: Jul 16, 2014 3:13 PM

Well, you’ll have to excuse non-Viking fans for not having committed the jersey numbers of ex-players/charlatans to memory…

  44. sonofad says: Jul 16, 2014 3:30 PM

As appropriate as funeral black would be for the Vikings, last place in purple just fits them.

No one ever confused this fan base with members of MENSA. They actually paid into the thousands for used urinals from the metrodump as they consider them souvenirs while putting them up in their houses as decoration!

  46. wheezerswin says: Jul 16, 2014 4:30 PM

  47. dd393 says: Jul 16, 2014 7:18 PM

Thought the Vike’s uniforms couldn’t get uglier. Guess I underestimated the designers.

  48. pzebich says: Jul 17, 2014 8:47 AM

Please, there are enough black jersies in the NFL already, and it doesn’t make you any tougher.

  49. pzebich says: Jul 17, 2014 8:48 AM

I do like the all purple.

  50. buckinhippo says: Jul 19, 2014 12:30 PM

for 2 years Vikes should go Maroon & Gold at home.
