For most Americans, summer will stretch on for several more weeks but NFL teams are preparing to get back to work as training camps open around the league.

One of the ways they prepare is by placing players on various non-participation lists that will keep them from practicing until later in camp or after the regular season starts. The Bills got the ball rolling on Wednesday by making moves involving five players.

Linebacker Kiko Alonso was one of three players placed on the Non-Football Injury list. Alonso will miss the entire season after tearing his ACL while working out earlier this month. Tackle Cordy Glenn, who was held out of some late Spring work with an illness, and defensive tackle Alan Branch are also on the list.

Cornerback Leodis McKelvin, who is recovering from hip surgery, and linebacker Randell Johnson were put on the Physically Unable to Perform list. Players on either list can be activated at any time during camp or they can revert to the regular season version of them if they aren’t ready when the regular season gets underway.

The Bills also announced that they have signed former Steelers linebacker Stevenson Sylvester. Sylvester mostly appeared on special teams during his four years with the Steelers and Alonso’s injury may open up a spot on the depth chart for a linebacker. Tight end Mike Caussin was released to make room on the roster.
