Falcons land at 14th in our Preseason Power Rankings

The Falcons have a chance to bounce back in a big way, thanks to some big additions this offseason.

After slouching under the weight of some big injuries and soft lines on both sides of the ball, the Falcons attacked the offseason the way you’d expect them to.

Within hours of the start of free agency, they added three linemen who should help make the team tougher and more physical, things they lacked last year.

But as importantly, they’re expecting to have wide receivers Julio Jones and Roddy White healthy again, which will automatically make them one of the league’s most dynamic offenses.

Because of those returns, we’ve slotted them 14th in our Preseason Power Rankings. You can read the full preview by clicking right here, and then weigh in on the poll and the comments to tell us if we’ve got it right.

    Yeah….way too high.

They will win the NFC south this year for sure.

Someone new every year in that division.

    Fine offense + fair 2 middlin’ defense = 8-8.

Osi Umenyiora is the best pass rusher, everyone else is unproven or role players. ‘Nuff said.

  4. mrlaloosh says: Jul 16, 2014 9:28 AM

Meek Smith will keep them near the bottom.

  5. jmart1971 says: Jul 16, 2014 9:32 AM

not saying much if you “best pass rusher” is Osi

Matty Ice is more like Matty Stafford and not in a good way. Your rankings are completely meaningless as usual.

  7. samapoc says: Jul 16, 2014 9:58 AM

Matty Ice can’t win big games.

  8. lanzurrah says: Jul 16, 2014 10:14 AM

How the hell are Atl and Pitt ahead of San Diego?

  9. tformation says: Jul 16, 2014 10:28 AM

Yeah, not seeing this much of an improvement over last year. An improvement, sure, but most likely missing the playoffs… even with the Panthers taking a huge dropoff…

They will be black in the hunt probably will win the div. them or the saints.

This team is on the brink of needing a total rebuild. Yes they have a franchise QB. But other than Ryan, their best player is an injury prone Julio Jones. Roddy White isn’t getting any younger, and both offensive and defensive lines ar in a shambles.

  12. steelerben says: Jul 16, 2014 10:49 AM

They are going to finish last in the division behind first place New Orleans, second place Tampa and third place Carolina.

  13. uncletuna says: Jul 16, 2014 11:08 AM

Falcons won’t win the division because of two words – Sean Payton – the man that owns the Atlanta Falcons.

  14. crewchief15 says: Jul 16, 2014 11:18 AM

what a joke of a list

  15. craigwalker67 says: Jul 16, 2014 11:22 AM

    1. Saints 13-3
    2. Tampa 9-7
    3. Falcons 8-8
    4. Panthers 5-11

  16. slick50ks says: Jul 16, 2014 11:31 AM

A team with virtually no defense is ranked too high on any list.

Oh, I forgot. Tyson Jackson is the saviour.

  17. detdominance says: Jul 16, 2014 12:24 PM

I don’t understand the rationale for having them this high, when they have a unbalanced offensive attack and a poor defense. Lions and Rams could easily occupy this spot

  18. SeenThisB4 says: Jul 16, 2014 12:35 PM

Too high. 21st would have been more accurate.

  19. smackingfools says: Jul 16, 2014 12:44 PM

Who came up with this list? I’d be embarrassed.

  20. tampamac says: Jul 16, 2014 12:49 PM

Bucs VS Falcons- 26th Vs 14

    RB- ADV TB
    WR-ADV ATL(until Evans is Proven)
    TE- ADV TB
    OL- ADV TB

    LB- ADV TB
    CB- ADV TB
    S – ADV TB
    ST- ADV ATL(added Hester)

I tried to be as unbiased as possible on this. Now how the hell is Atlanta ranked 12 spots better?

  21. northeastkiller says: Jul 16, 2014 12:54 PM

Usual Falcon preseason hype gets them this high, nothing more. Matty Hype doesn’t deserve the consideration he gets. And you can downthumb the “Sean Payton owns the Falcons” comment all you like, 12-2 doesn’t lie.

  22. dallascowboysdishingthereal says: Jul 16, 2014 1:49 PM

    It’s too high.
The Falcons did a good job of addressing some concerns in the draft but this team had a lot of issues last season on offense and defense.

  23. jjgautreaux says: Jul 16, 2014 1:50 PM

    Mike Smith = Les Miles

  24. jedibob5 says: Jul 16, 2014 3:43 PM

@jjgautreaux: What do you mean by that? Mike Smith doesn’t maintain a monster defense year after year and get four consecutive ten win seasons…

  25. suave61 says: Jul 16, 2014 3:58 PM

So what that they have Julio jones and Roddy White. The Falcons could always score except in the red zone with Mike Smith’s very predictable play calling. The main problem that existed seven years ago still exist. They can’t stop nobody and have no pass rush! They’re too cheap on defensive. They waived their best pass rusher,Abraham’lol. That says it all. Born lossers that think mediocre is deserving of a new stadium, stand up!

  26. ashleyschafferbmw says: Jul 16, 2014 5:28 PM

I know teams can turn things around quickly in one season (Cheifs), and that the falcons made it deep into playoffs 2 seasons ago. But man, they won 4 games last year. Julio Jones is an incredible player that they definitely missed last season, but I think ranking them 14 is way too high

    Sainys win division HANDS DOWN!!!
