Michael Robinson: Seahawks have to “keep close watch” on egos

Seattle Seahawks Victory Parade Getty Images

Seahawks linebacker Bobby Wagner recently shared his belief that the team is “way better” heading into the defense of their Super Bowl title, but another member of the championship squad doesn’t think things are going to be easier for the Seahawks this time around.

Fullback Michael Robinson’s contract expired and may have reached the end of his playing days, leaving him free to wonder if the team’s offseason activities might hinder their attempt at back-to-back titles. Robinson pointed to the loss of players like Red Bryant, Chris Clemons and himself and wondered if a team stocked with young players off big contract extensions will suffer for the lack of grizzed veterans.

“My question for the Seahawks this year is … there’s a lot of young guys in that locker room with new money,” Robinson said on the Dave Dameshek Football Program. “When issues come up in the locker room, who is the veteran that settles it? . … Things come up, ‘Hey guys — stop doing that! Hey, you go over there, you go over there, and it’s over. No more.’ And guys would stop. Right now, guys have gotten paid, you know what I mean? Guys have got egos, you know what I mean? That’s just only natural with money, and they have to watch against that in the locker room, and that’s something that Pete [Carroll] can’t see — their offices are upstairs. They just have to keep a close watch on it.”

Those are concerns that have come up with almost every title team in the free agency era and the rarity of repeat champions speaks to the difficulty of going the distance in consecutive seasons. The Seahawks are clearly talented enough to buck that trend and they still have several young stars looking for the kinds of big contracts (or, as Percy Harvin said recently, other kinds of fulfillment) that Richard Sherman and Earl Thomas got this offseason, so they may be able to avoid the pitfalls that Robinson is worried about.

It’s already too late, those heads exploded a long time ago. Gonna be tough sledding for the Seahawks this year. Everybody would be gunning for them anyway, even if they had somehow managed to show half the grace of the last few champs.

  12. norcalmafia says: Jul 16, 2014 2:59 PM

They should..You can already tell their fans have a HUUUUUUGE inferiority complex with the 49ers and the Bay Area….even when they win theyre always in Friscos shadow and it shows…

Point take, MikeRob. We’ll get to see on opening night against Green Bay how ready the Seahawks are to defend their title.

They’ll need more than a last-second Hail Mary this time!

  14. cowstache says: Jul 16, 2014 3:00 PM

I agree, check your ego at the door and just get out there and let your play do the talking. I know for some of our guys thats impossible(Sherman) but for the most part I think this year if the Hawks can overcome the adverse target that has been place firmly on their backs then they have a real shot at a repeat. Good luck, close your mouths, and Go Hawks!

  15. cowstache says: Jul 16, 2014 3:03 PM

Just for the record Russell Wilson is probably the most humble Super Bowl Champion QB I have ever seen! The guy does so much for our community, he is truly what every player in the league should mirror themselves after.

  16. purpleguy says: Jul 16, 2014 3:05 PM

This isn’t rocket science — if they win, the egos won’t be an issue, but if they face losses and the corresponding adversity, they might.

  17. trollhammer20 says: Jul 16, 2014 3:07 PM

He’s right in a sense. Many of the veterans from last year’s run are gone, and finding new leaders can be a challenge.

Brandon Mebane and Max Unger are the two longest-tenured Seahawks, so they come readily to mind. On defense, Kam and Earl are highly competitive and will look to step forward into more of a leadership role this year.

Plus there’s a young QB who seems to be able to keep his own focus and never loses his cool. The example he sets should go a long way towards keeping others in check.

Remember, these players were chosen because they displayed the kind of work ethic Seattle looks for. “Takes plays off” and “work ethic issues” are typically not traits of Seattle draft choices. You shirk and start playing the blame game, you risk losing playing time to the guys behind you on the roster.

I remember when the Raiders were good. I hated the Raiders because they were good and beat the Seahawks. Hated the Broncos for the same reason. Because of this, I understand why fans from other teams now hate the Seahawks. Guess what trolls, the Seahawks are not going anywhere in the near future; you know it and you can’t stand it; I love it. you were warned. THE SEAHAWKS EMPIRE is upon you. 23. time2speakup says: Jul 16, 2014 3:11 PM

If I am wrong, then please, someone correct my observation of the Seahawks as champions: simply put, so far they have been the MOST tacky and tasteless NFL Champions in modern memory. True, enormous ego’s can and do come into play when a team “wins it all” – that’s understandable – and human – to a point! But this “collection” in particular that out of control young idiot Sherman, has gone totally off the deep end. There “crash N’ Burn” will be of epic proportions. They indeed “know” history and they are doomed to repeat it – but thus far seem oblivious to that reality. Sad.

It is clear as mud that the Seahawks are talented enough to repeat. Their offensive line was their weak spot last season, and Russell Wilson was sacked nearly 50 times. They lost their starting tackle Breno Giacomini, so they are worse. The loss of Red Bryant, Chris Clemons and Clinton McDonald will hurt their run defense and pass rush, and the loss of Walter Thrumond (nickel back/starter) and Brandon Browner(CB) will hurt their backfield defense. Byron Maxwell played well last year but who is going to play nickel? Michael Robinson has a point. Richard Sherman has the money and the ego, but he is not a leader. His teammates cannot stand his mouth. They are not going to let him boss them around. The Seahawks lost almost as many starters as the Ravens did after winning the SB, and they are not going to do much better than the Ravens did and may miss the playoffs altogether. I think the Niners will win the West, and the remaining playoff spots will be fought among the Lions, Eagles, Cardinals, Packers, Saints, Panthers, and Seahawks. Only 5 other teams will make the playoffs, and the Seahawks may not be one of them.

  35. tommiepickles says: Jul 16, 2014 3:21 PM

I love Michael Robinson and think the guy is an excellent leader and locker room personality. The reality is even though we lost two other leaders in Bryant and Clem that the other younger guys get their chance to step up and be more vocal. There is no way that happens with established leaders already set.

I think Seattle has a tonne of guys on both sides of the ball that can fill those roles. Its far better than alternative than overpaying on older veteran for past experience and leadership alone. Tim Ruskell shows us what that looks like.

Most Seahawk fans are well aware that things change quickly in the NFL, right now we’re on top and it feels good, but we’re in the toughest division in sports right now and a couple key injuries or serious stupidity can quickly put us in 3rd or 4th place in a hurry. So long as the Hawks keep that in mind I think they’ve got the best chance of winning it all again, but I wouldn’t be surprised if the 49er’s, Rams or Cards take it from us. I highly doubt anyone else in the league could.

  43. wimpyburgers says: Jul 16, 2014 3:36 PM

Norcal, if Seahawks hadn’t lost in the last 30 seconds of the NFCDG against Atlanta, We’d have come to SF, kicked 49er-butt and today, two years later, we WOULD BE talking dynasty.

    49ers talking about someone else’s team !
Where have I heard that before??

Oh yeah, Jim Harbaugh talking about the Seahawks and the “49er Way.”

How’d that work out for him and you?

  44. tap79 says: Jul 16, 2014 3:36 PM

Love Mike Rob but dont put your old team down, which makes me wonder….. Remember he was cut before the 2013 season only to be brought back as a situational full back.

Loved Red Bryant…. Although I saw RB’s blow past him several times in 2013 leaving Wagner or Kam to have to pick up the slack.

Loved Clemons…. But lets be real he should have retired after last season and his production was way down… Irvin Bennett and Avril performed the best and they are still around.

Tate was OK but he needed to go after what he pulled.

Browner didnt play half the season so…. It is not like he was huge impact on the superbowl run.

Thurmond was great in 2014… But for most of you bandwagon fans that was his best year, his prior years he spent most of his time sitting on the bench injured.

Loved Breno…… But lets get real he was out hurt most of the season too and the rookies had to fill in they should be better trained this season to pick up the slack.

All in all The Seahawks have the absolute best chance at a repeat this year I know all you haters think you know what you are talking about but just watch what they do this season… They will take the division and the NFC, name one other team other than the whiners that could even come close? There arent any…

There is a lot of talent and the LOB are out to be the greatest that have ever played the game. Kam, Earl and Sherm want to hoist 5 SB’s, have the #1 D in 2014 for the 3rd straight year. They are brutha’s in the truest sense of the word.

Those 3 will lead the D for the next 4-5 years.

On O, it will continue to be Wilson with the motivation. Lynch will be physical and quiet while Michael gets revving.

The players the Hawks lost weren’t irreplaceable. In fact, that’s why they let them walk. There were younger, less expensive and just as athletic guys waiting.

The Seahawks are a dam good football team and to think that their best players on D aren’t even in their prime. omg….

Beware NFL… Expect more beatdowns and thrashings in 2014 and not a letdown in the bunch.

Oklahoma City has a really good team but repeating isn’t likely going to happen. It’s a lot harder when you’re the hunted and not the hunter. I see 9-11 wins max and early exit in the playoffs. Still a good team though and will be in the mix for at least the next few years.

  73. carbonriver says: Jul 16, 2014 6:01 PM

Thomas and Bennett will be leaders on the D and Wilson and Unger will manage their side of the team just fine. Robinson is actually the biggest loss of the group that has departed for his relationship with Lynch and role as his lead blocker. Tate’s punt return skills will be missed but are not irreplaceable with the guys they have in the cupboard. The others were all significantly injured or otherwise getting less action due to injuries. All the viking and other strange haters on here who bring up Browner are the biggest jokes, LOB got significantly better after he went out with injuries.

  74. hawks1223 says: Jul 16, 2014 6:01 PM

Funny how all these fans of other teams are Hawks experts. If you really knew the Hawks you would know the depth we have. We haven’t lost by more than 7 points in like 3 years. Haven’t lost a preseason game in two years. Our depth will come through again for us this year. Just watch. And FYI the guys we lost we are replaceable parts. That’s what good teams do.

  75. realitycheckbaby says: Jul 16, 2014 6:15 PM

First, of course it’s hard to repeat. That’s why it hasn’t happened under modern cap rules.

But to think losing Red or Robinson or Clem will be the reason is a joke.

If you think they wanted to win more or worked harder than Sherm or Thomas or Wilson or Baldwin than, as your comments suggest, you’re hoping, not analyzing.

And as for Santa Clara fans, what have you done this decade?

  76. radar8 says: Jul 16, 2014 6:18 PM

Seattle got lucky with the schedule. Ironically, the toughest teams that they will meet (outside of the division) are home games for Seattle:

    Green Bay
    Denver
    Dallas
    Giants

    Who paid off the scheduler?

  77. jayhawk777 says: Jul 16, 2014 6:23 PM

Would you rather be the hunter’s with swiss army knives and pea shooters like most of the NFL or the hunted with AK-47’s and machetes?

The machete’s are for the Redskins on MNF in October. I will be there, so beware.

I’d rather be the hunted with the ammunition and not the hunter’s with camping gear.

    Hawks dominate!

  78. dukeearl says: Jul 16, 2014 6:43 PM

Santa Clara fans are always going to be second fiddle… if they ever win another NFCCG again they will lose in the Superbowl…
    Why?
    No QB.

  79. sjsuguy says: Jul 16, 2014 6:44 PM

It all depends on how many games lynch misses because of his no contest DUI plea? It can make the difference in who gets home field advantage. As good as Oklahoma City is at home they still haven’t been able to beat the 49ers on the road. Lynch is what makes their offense go. Wilson is good and should only get better but their o-line gave up over 40 sacks last year and that’s with passing less than 50% of the time.

  80. realitycheckbaby says: Jul 16, 2014 7:26 PM

    Radar.

EVERYONE in the NFCW is better than Dallas and NY. and Denver and GB would ne third at best.

  81. capn0bvious says: Jul 16, 2014 7:42 PM

They still have Lynch, right? Who’s going to mouth off to the Beast if he tells them to knock it off?

  82. mrbreakout says: Jul 16, 2014 8:04 PM

I guess the kids must be out from spring break…

I think his observation is spot on. Already there have been fights in OTA’s and mini-camp between those players who got the money and the rest of the team. When did that ever happen before in the last 3-4 years?

With so many ego’s on that team, it will take some veteran leadership to get them to calm down.

Hopefully Mebaine, Unger, etc will be willing to step up to the job.

But more than anything else, it will take Wilson becoming a better pocket passer if they want to repeat. He senses pressure too much and bails prematurely way too often to be an effective NFL QB.

  83. adderal says: Jul 16, 2014 8:25 PM

Its to late, If I was a fan of that team Id quit watching now. Last year was as good as your every gonna feel in your entire lives and if I wasn’t so busy laughing about it id be sad for your guys. Back to 500 where you belong and have been on average since 76

  84. hawkforlife says: Jul 16, 2014 9:08 PM

Late to the party folks but as soon as I saw the headline I knew what was coming and I wasn’t wrong.

Too many idiots to mention individually but the way the usual suspects talk you’d think they actually had the balls to play the game themselves.

Hard to do though when mom hasn’t made their lunch yet.

  85. higheriqthanyou says: Jul 16, 2014 9:30 PM

Can we all just agree that Seattle is the best team in the NFL right now?

    Obviously!

Either love us or hate us.

    But admit it…

    We are on top.

  86. sidepull says: Jul 16, 2014 9:31 PM

    Same applies to the fans.

  87. nosleeptilsb says: Jul 16, 2014 10:27 PM

Whats really funny to me is, our Seahawks from 78 could beat the majority of the modern day teams our haters support. Skol!!!

  88. worldchampionseahawks says: Jul 16, 2014 10:40 PM

Mike Rob does bring up a good point, however anyone that has watched this team over the last five years has no doubt that leaders will step up. This team has been built for the long haul! most of the haters on here just wish they got to watch the kind of Smash Mouth football we get to watch every Sunday

  89. worldchampionseahawks says: Jul 16, 2014 10:42 PM

To anyone that comments on our fan base starting two years ago, YouTube a video of the Hawks in the kingdome back when we sucked and I guarantee you it was sold out and loud.

  90. palatypus says: Jul 16, 2014 10:47 PM

The Seahawks are the intimidators. The rest of the league are the intimidated. You want them to stop talking?

    Do something about it.

  91. scout4life2014 says: Jul 17, 2014 12:12 AM

When was the last time the Hawks won in the Bay?

  92. hoosyadaddy says: Jul 17, 2014 1:58 AM

Good…..Good, let the hate and butthurt flow. When the Seahawks win the Super Bowl again this season the laughter and I Told You So’s from the greatest football fans in the world, the 12s, will be all that much louder and sweeter.

*wrings hands and bellows evil laugh, bwahahahahahahahahahaha*

  93. osiris33 says: Jul 17, 2014 2:00 AM

This is so amusing. I’m gonna enjoy this season even more than last. The gap between the Seahawks and the rest of the NFL is huge, and it got even bigger this offseason.

Can’t wait for what you all come up with next February.

Be afraid, NFL. BE VERY AFRAID.

  94. RegisHawk says: Jul 17, 2014 3:41 AM

Lynch didn’t plead No Contest to DUI. That was Aldon Smith. He’ll get sentenced for it next week. Then Roger Goodell will determine how many games to suspend him.

Vikes trolls have nothing but time to post, that’s why you see so much of them here. It’s not like they’ll ever be out in the street celebrating a win.

Toughest teams – Dallas & Giants? LOL

MRob is doing the standard conversion from player to media analyst. He’s expected to limit his bias with regard to teams he played for. Pretty mild considering how some ex-players waited 3 seconds to bash their team/coach the minute they put on a suit.

  95. hawkssea1985 says: Jul 17, 2014 12:54 PM

Repeating a Super Bowl is so difficult – but which team has a better shot/roster in 2014? …it’s tough to make the case that any other team besides Seattle is the favorite in next season (Vegas agrees)

If you trolls think the hawks are gonna suck this year then you still don’t understand how they got here

    GO HAWKS

  96. sjsuguy says: Jul 18, 2014 11:46 AM

I stand corrected. Lynch pleased guilty in February 2014 to wreckless driving to avoid jail time after blowing a .08. Isn’t it funny how if you’re rich and famous that the law doesn’t apply to you?

  97. sjsuguy says: Jul 18, 2014 11:53 AM

I wonder if Oklahoma City had to pay Texas to use the “12th man”or if they are just stealing the idea and taking credit for it? They should try and trademark throwing popcorn on injured players from opposing teams because its the only thing that sets them apart from other fans.

  98. hawkssea1985 says: Jul 18, 2014 12:15 PM

SJSUGUY: I’m sorry your a bitter Santa Clara 49ers fan- better luck next year

I hope their egos destroy the team.
