Packers want Eddie Lacy more involved in all aspects of offense

Green Bay Packers Mini Camp AP

Workhorse running backs have fallen out of favor in the NFL recently, but the Packers seemed to be just fine with using Eddie Lacy as one in 2013.

Lacy had 22 or more touches in 11 of the team’s final 14 games, including the playoff loss to the 49ers, last year and that usage doesn’t look like it will be going down in 2014. While James Starks is back and DuJuan Harris is healthy after missing last season, Packers offensive coordinator Tom Clements says that the team’s plan is for Lacy to play a bigger role on the offense in his second season.

“We haven’t sat down and figured out ‘X’ number of carries for Eddie,” Clements said, via ESPN.com. “We want to get him touches, trying to get him more involved in all aspects of the game, but Eddie was a workhorse for us last year. And then when James got in there last year, he ran very hard. That was a great one-two punch. Now you factor in DuJuan and the other guys, it’s going to be interesting to see how that plays out.”

A bigger role for Lacy fits right into the Packers’ desire to run their offense more quickly this season. Lacy played about two-thirds of the snaps last season, a number that could go up if he takes on a bigger role as a receiver and pass blocker than he played as a rookie. If it does, Lacy will be on the field for all three downs and the Packers should be able to fulfill their goal of driving up the number of offensive snaps they take per game. If Aaron Rodgers is healthy enough to take all of those snaps at quarterback, Green Bay’s offense is going to be even more of a handful for opposing defenses than it was while scoring 417 points last season.

Eddie Lacy = Trent Richardson 2.0 at best.

We’ve all seen this story happen with Alabama Running Backs in the past.

Have a great rookie season, make it look like they’re going to succeed in the NFL.

And then BOOM. Turns into a complete bust and a wasted draft pick.

Ultimately, this will be Eddie Lacy’s fate.

I think the first step would be to come to camp not fat and out of shape. The second step would be to find him a head stretcher!!! he has the smallest head in the league so I see why he always gets knocked out!!!!

SO the Packers plan for Lacy to play a bigger role in the offense and it’s reported as something that is favorable by the media.
But Jamaal Charles is a big part of the Chiefs offense the media says that’s no good.
    JC>Lacy so please explain, Josh.

I am glad that our best friends to the west got a chance to comment on our Packer post before any of us. They must really care about us a lot. They always have the the most intelligent insight on our team. They also always give our team positive criticism.

  9. garyridgway says: Jul 17, 2014 10:38 AM

Should be a good test for the Seahawks week 1. Losing Red Bryant on those early run downs may be a problem for us with a bruiser like Lacy.

  10. thestrategyexpert says: Jul 17, 2014 10:43 AM

Of course they haven’t figured out how many carries he will get. These are the people that figured Aaron Rodgers would be available for 16 games last year, he only made it for 9. It’s smart of them to shift focus to what they want and what they will try to do instead of over-hoping.

  11. rodgersfeeblecollarbone says: Jul 17, 2014 10:44 AM

Haha… Ya, Eddie “Too Fat Cause of Big Macs” Lacy is going to get more touches. Please…. There’s tape on him now. He’ll be lucky to have 500 yards this year let alone make it through the season if he’s “more involved”.

Aside from QB, the Packers are easily the worst team in the NFC North. Not even close. If any other team loses their QB, they’ll still have enough talent to win games. Not the Packers….if Rodgers goes down, the Packers are garbage.

    NFC North Standings

    1) Minnesota Vikings (12-4)
    2) Detroit Lions (10-6)
    3) Chicago Bears (8-8)
    4) Green Bay Packers (4-12)

    Book It….

  12. tokyosandblaster says: Jul 17, 2014 10:44 AM

  14. pkrlvr says: Jul 17, 2014 10:47 AM

Considering Lacy only put up 60 less yards last season than AP while not even playing a full compliment of games I’d say we are all set. Keep talking trolls, it just means you are scared, which you should be. There’s no way the vikes can keep pace with the best qb/rb combo in the league.

  16. msc4realeagles says: Jul 17, 2014 10:55 AM

  18. purpleguy says: Jul 17, 2014 11:05 AM

Look, Lacy is a very good RB, but he doesn’t scare this Vikings fan near as much as Cobb does — that’s the guy the Pack should use more. And come on, anyone claiming Lacy is better than AP is either stupid or trolling. Sure he’s younger, but please. . . . .

  19. granadafan says: Jul 17, 2014 11:11 AM

No dog in this fight, but it’s clear that Vikings fans are the worst in the NFL followed by Seattle in a close second. Vikings fans are just plain moronic. Seattle fans are like the rednecks who, despite all odds, hit the lottery. They’re new money but still the uncouth and classless slobs they were before but still have that gigantic chip on their shoulder about “old money” people (49ers, Steelers, Giants, etc).

  20. dethsupport says: Jul 17, 2014 11:17 AM

The packers are going to get blown out in the season opener. 0 – 1 right out of the gates guaranteed. That will set the tone for the rest of the season.

  21. whatjusthapped says: Jul 17, 2014 11:29 AM

Prior to the arrival of Lacy, the Packers were a lethal offense in search of some balance. Spending a 2nd round pick on Lacy, the Packers have achieved that goal and we still don’t know the true upside of both Rodgers and Lacy because they have spent less than half of games together due to injuries to both last year.

That should strike fear into the hearts of the rest of the NFL and especially the last place Vikings how couldn’t even force a punt in one game last year and gave up a 20 point lead in the other. But to have fear, the Viking fans would need to first recognize reality, not one of their strong suits.

  22. whatthehellisgoingonoutthere says: Jul 17, 2014 11:32 AM

Only a fool would think that Trent Richardson had a great rookie season. He averaged a paltry 3.6 YPC. Lacy averaged almost a full yard more in his rookie season.

  23. Aaron Rodgers has Tiny Hands says: Jul 17, 2014 11:37 AM

I have never seen a running back that averages 4.1 yards per carry get so much hype. You’d think with Aaron Rodgers, the best quarterback in the NFL, and Matt Flynn, “the best backup quarterback in the NFL,” the defense would loosen up enough that he could break through that line a little bit.

  24. thevikesarebest says: Jul 17, 2014 11:39 AM

Eddie Lacy rushed for 60 less yards than Adrian Peterson last year. Both were OROY.

    Adrian Peterson- $14 million
    Eddie Lacy- $616,00

    You do that math.

The torch had been passed last year when the old oft injured declining rb Peterson couldn’t outduel the “Hammer” Lacy in head to head matchups. That was when Lacy was in on only 1st and 2nd downs. Cant wait to see him steamroll another Viking like he did to the bust Rhodes!

  29. Aaron Rodgers has Tiny Hands says: Jul 17, 2014 11:52 AM

  30. whatthehellisgoingonoutthere says: Jul 17, 2014 11:52 AM

  31. Aaron Rodgers has Tiny Hands says: Jul 17, 2014 11:54 AM

Apparently I’m not allowed to present facts, but I’ll try again. Peterson outrushed Lacy by 88 yards on five fewer carries and one less game. All defenses are stacked to stop Peterson. No defenses are stacked to stop Lacy.

Trent Richardson 2.0 sure does put work against the pathetic Vikings. They have the most delusional fans besides redskins. these franchises and their fans are complete losers whom every year try to talk trash but end up hiding in the bushes when they do what we expect them to do SUCK. They are the best teams at one thing though keeping losing traditions and waiting for their superbowl the NFL Draft. Then we go throughout the same cycle over.

  36. purplezimmerpride says: Jul 17, 2014 12:11 PM

This is not very good news for my Vikings NFC North worst defense. we couldn’t stop him with Tolzien as QB so I shudder to think at what will happen with Rodgers back in the game.

I guess we pin our hopes on our NFC North worst offense.

  37. whatthehellisgoingonoutthere says: Jul 17, 2014 12:11 PM

Eddie Lacy played in essentially 14 games. He was knocked out of the game with a concussion after 1 carry. Meanwhile, he faced stacked boxes most of the season with the best QB in the NFL on the sidelines with a broken collarbone.

No doubt Peterson is a great RB, but unfortunately with his cap hit and declining performance and no prospects of having a great or even good QB on the horizon, his best chance to get a ring is if the Vikings release him due to his high cap hits. He costs way too much money against the cap and even on his best year can’t lead a team to a SB championship.

  38. youngs79 says: Jul 17, 2014 12:12 PM

Adrian Peterson already has gained more yards than ANY running back in Green Bay’s history! Comparing Lacy to that is moronic. When Lacy rushes for 10,000 yards, if he does, get back to me. By the way, Adrian is 29 years old and his stats are only going to get bigger.

  39. whatthehellisgoingonoutthere says: Jul 17, 2014 12:16 PM

“The Packers saw a lot of eight-man boxes in last week’s 27-13 loss to the New York Giants. Expectedly, the Vikings dusted off a similar game plan with lots of one-high safety looks, but the offensive line and Lacy were up to the task.

There were few spectacular rushes outside of James Starks’ 34-yard carry in the third quarter, but Lacy consistently chipped away on the Vikings’ line. When he got free on the outside, he flattened defensive backs like Xavier Rhodes for the extra yard.”

  40. bdfun400 says: Jul 17, 2014 12:24 PM

having a year of tape on him means nothing. Its not like a QB when you can learn tendencies or see a receiver tip his routes. It’s a running back in a zone offense–all you see is he makes his read and runs downhill. The only thing you get from tape is that maybe you need extra support in the box to try and slow the passing attack down…At which point you also notice its #12 giving him the ball.

Having a year of tape of Lacy running hard and effectively without #12 for a large chunk of it is scary. A DC is now faced with keeping 2high safeties to cover the pass threat or roll a guy down to try and prevent the run.

Lacy doesnt need to be spectacular and nobody cares that AP is better than him. He just has to be effective and d-coordinators will lose sleep.

I wouldnt expect vikes to know anything about this since they have no pass threat.

Tiny hands, I literally don’t see one post where anyone said EL was better than AP. One guy said he’d rather have EL going forward but that’s not the same thing. EL is much younger and gets a fifteenth of AP’s salary while producing nearly the same stats. Is he the next AP, who knows, but last year he was almost as good, so hearing the usually queen trolls talk junk about him is mind boggling. For the record I think AP is crazy good and I’ve taken him in the first round 3 years running and hopefully will get him again this year. But mark my words, EL in the 2nd or (crossing fingers) third round will produce nearly as well.

I don’t know why people keep saying Packer fans are delusional, just because they think a guy you can pick up in the second round of any draft is better than the greatest running back of all time. Everyone knows that 32 carries for 146 yards is worse than 25 carries for 110 yards, and there’s no greater accomplishment than playing the Vikings to a hard-fought tie at Lambeau.

Frankly, I think Lacy is a one-dimensional player, and should be used as such. He’s a pure rusher, and should stay exclusively in that role.

As for the best all-around back in the North?

    See for yourself.

    1. Matt Forte – 1,933 total yds., 12 tds (9 rushing, 3 receiving)
    Avg. rushing ypg: 84
    Runs of 20+ yds: 9
    74 recs. for 594 yds.
League rank: #2 overall (behind L. McCoy)
Pass protection: one of the best

    2. Adrian Peterson – 1,437 total yds., 11 tds (10 rushing, 1 rec)
    Avg. rushing ypg: 90
    Runs of 20+ yds: 8
    29 recs. for 171 yds.
    League rank: #5 overall
    Pass protection: not so much

    3. Eddie “Are you gonna eat the rest of that?” Lacy – 1,435 total yds., 11 rushing tds
    avg. rushing ypg: 79
    Runs of 20+ yds: 3
    35 recs. for 257 yds.
    League rank: #8 overall
    Pass protection: not so much

But heck – I say keep him in on 3rd downs and give him a shot at pass blocking for Rodgers.

Let’s just hope that brittle collar bone holds up!

  48. whatthehellisgoingonoutthere says: Jul 17, 2014 1:10 PM

Seahawks fans….nobody cares about the Packers week 1 matchup with you. It’s nice that you’re riding high off after finally winning ONE championship.

Fortunately Packers fans are used to it by now with THIRTEEN. It will be interesting to see how the game unfolds without the scab ref’s handing them a fraud win. It would be even nicer if the game was played at Lambeau for once instead of a place with engineered crowd noise created by architects rather than passionate bandwagon fans.

actually if lacy were to try to lose some of his weight by changing his walking style, he would actually want to keep his arms steady. not moving your arms while you walk actually helps you lose more weight because your core (or something) has to work harder. just thought id throw that out there.

Wow another strawman argument he would guessed. First off Peterson is not the best of all time there are definitely others more worthy of that title. Would I put him top 10 definitely but #1 no.

Secondly lets put the other game in the stats to get the whole picture on how they matched up and you will see 94 yds for Lacy and 60 for Peterson but of course you would omit that because it goes against your whole argument. All things considered with a running back not playing on 3rd downs stats were quite similar to that of Petersons. One rb will get more opportunities this season while another will be 30 and on the decline that is just a fact. One will have the compliment of a career passing leader for the season while the other will have well… no one knows not even your coach. I do know based on each stage of their careers I would easily take Lacy vs Peterson.

OK… I was checking through the posts on here. I’m a Lions fan so I obviously don’t care for either team. But the Lions also face both teams twice a year (ya I know, we lose twice a year…hahaha) so I tend to know a bit about both teams.

Green Bay fans, there is no way, and I don’t care about the money differential and supposed upside, that your team, or any team for that matter, would take Lacy over AP. Never would this happen. That would be like saying you’d take Cobb over Calvin Johnson just because he’s young, has upside and is cheaper. It’s insane thinking. There are literally a handful of RB’s in history (Barry Sanders, Walter Payton, Eric Dickerson, OJ Simpson, Emmitt Smith, Jim Brown) that you could even say are better than him, let alone right now. Lacy had a fine rookie year. Leave it at that. He is not anywhere near the caliber of RB that AP is. Could he be eventually? Maybe but I doubt it. Just leave it as a decent rookie campaign.

For all you know he’ll bomb this year or get hurt. He’s played 14 games. Marin had a better rookie year than Lacy did in Tampa 2 years ago, as did Alfred Morris. IN fact, Morris did it 2 years in a row and still nobody is claiming he’s better than the best back in football.

As a Lions fan, we will always fear Rodgers throwing the ball and making us look stupid. We will never fear Lacy. And that goes for any other team the Packers face. In Minnesota, all you really fear is AP. It’s not even a competition. Lacy isn’t even in the sentence with AP at this point.

  65. themeccalambeaufield says: Jul 17, 2014 3:17 PM

See what you are missing Lion fan is the only one who said Lacy was better was a viking fan himself trying to make a strawman argument. The only thing put up was the comparisons last year and they were basically equal. Lastly I said with all things considered and based on this stage of their careers I would take Lacy. Peterson is way overpaid, been injured more lately, production going down, and will be 30 yrs old. He has a couple more productive years if he is lucky but yet the team will suffer because of his salary.

  66. rodgersfeeblecollarbone says: Jul 17, 2014 3:20 PM

    Come on Green Bay.

    Here’s a challenge.

What team in the NFC North would take the unproven, young Lacy over the RB, or RB’s, they currently have if they had to make a choice.

    1) Lions – Solid combo of Bell, Bush, Riddick and, possibly, LeShoure
    2) Vikings – Best RB in football Adrian Peterson
    3) Bears- One of the best, most underrated RB’s in the NFL, Matt Forte
    4) None of the above

I’ll vote a unanimous #4 from every team in the North. I would include Green Bay on the list that would vote similarly if they weren’t forced to pretend different.

Nobody said Lacey was better than Peterson, especially after 1 year. They said that the difference between the two isn’t dramatic based on production and the fact that Lacey saw a lot of stacked boxes for the 8 games Rodgers was out.

When you factor in the compensation each player makes and the production you get from each, with Lacey you have 13.5 million extra to pay WR’s and other complimentary players. The RB position is becoming highly devalued. Long gone are the days where you can ride a stud RB deep in the playoffs or SB like you could when it wasn’t a pass first league.

As a Lions fan you might want to fear the entire NFL. Your team success over its existence is exhibit A.

Le’veon Bell. LMAO There is not ONE Packer fan who regrets the Steeler’s picking him over Lacey. Not one. Why would they? All you have to do is look at their stats and you can see that Lacey was just as multi-purpose in receptions and a FAR better runner.

If his second season is as good or better, that’s great. If it isn’t… well the Pack won their latest Super Bowl before he arrived, so a quieter year from Lacy would hardly mean disaster. Especially since Starks and Harris are also primed to be whatever ground support Rodgers may need.

  71. simplesimon1 says: Jul 17, 2014 3:48 PM

Must be awesome to be a Packers fan. When somebody wins the Championship and you don’t you simply downplay them and say you have 14 championships, therefore, in your mind, discounting that Seattle actually is the current champion and about to completely destroy you to open the season.

And if somebody actually points out that it’s insane to say Lacy doesn’t deserve to be in the conversation with AP, then you say you never said he was better while at the same time distinctly saying you would target have him considering the price though.

As a lions fan I am not afraid of lacy at all but I am afraid of AP and Rodgers. Lacy had a slightly above average rookie campaign with some nice moments. Leave it at that.

By the way, lions fans like me know we’ve sucked for a long time. We just hope for the best. By attacking that it doesn’t hurt us…lol… it’s not my fault that no other team in the north would take lacy over what they currently have, as the troll pointed out. It’s simply fact. Play for more than 14 average games before you crown lacy.

  72. teal379 says: Jul 17, 2014 3:59 PM

I’d like to compare Lacy’s stats in January to AP’s.

Or even the number of times in their carrier they’ve had to play in January. What’s that percentage for both?

  73. ariani1985 says: Jul 17, 2014 4:05 PM

What I think these cheese trolls are trying to say is that we will have a great offense and a rancid defense and we will loose in the playoffs. There I got it right!

  74. whatthehellisgoingonoutthere says: Jul 17, 2014 5:00 PM

The torch has been passed can mean a lot of things. Even though I wasn’t the one who said it. Peterson is not even the best RB in the NFL. Best runner…maybe, but McCoy was far more productive in yards from scrimmage, receiving yards and yards per carry, so he is the best RB in football. And he’s also a 3 down back unlike Peterson. Peterson is a very unnatural pass catcher as they discussed on KFAN a few weeks ago with one of the Vikings coaches.

  75. whatthehellisgoingonoutthere says: Jul 17, 2014 5:03 PM

Nothing makes me laugh more than a Vikings fan talking about defense when their team has allowed more points in EVERY one of the last 5 years. Of course only 3 seasons have passed since the Packers and their defense hoisted up another Lombardi.

Living in Minnesota, I know first hand how much that pained Vikings fans to have to witness.

  76. rodgersfeeblecollarbone says: Jul 17, 2014 5:20 PM

The torch has been passed cannot mean a lot of things…. good lord.

Especially when followed up by the “old oft injured declining rb Peterson couldn’t outduel the “Hammer” Lacy…”

Next, sorry, but Peterson is still the best. Haven’t heard anybody claim different aside from McCoy himself. Peterson does it with no team and 8 in the box. I love McCoy, but the Eagles are a high flying, really good offense.

You are starting to make yourself look silly.

Here’s one for you. I don’t even think Lacy is better than Starks. I think he’s a one-trick pony who has four 100 yard games. It wasn’t even an impressive rookie season if compared to rookie seasons by most RB’s that win rookie of the year. Martin from the Bucs and Morris were way better in their rookie years.

Like I said, Rodgers is the only real reason to fear Green Bay. 4.1 ypc is no all star, despite the high hopes in Wisconsin.

But, just to get back to it. Nobody has yet taken up the challenge to tell me what NFC North team would give up the RB’s they have to replace them with Lacy. I’m all ears!!!

    Book It

Week 5….Suh ends Eddie “Too Fat Cause of Big Macs” Lacy’s season. In the same game he also ends Aaron “Alcoholic Anonymous” Rodgers season. Then he phones up Dietrich-Smith and they laugh, and they laugh…

    Book It

Man, I can’t wait til week 1. No more talking. Just football. :)

  79. whatthehellisgoingonoutthere says: Jul 17, 2014 5:26 PM

Lacy only played 6 games with Rodgers. And the box was stacked against him when they trotted out the garbage backup QB’s. With Rodgers back, it’s pick your poison. As Rhodes found out first hand.

The Packers only need to be in the top half of the league in rushing to be successful as a team and have respect in the run game by defenses. Unlike the Vikings who if they don’t have an MVP season out of their RB, they won’t even finish .500 because the defense and rest of the offense is so pathetic.

  80. whatthehellisgoingonoutthere says: Jul 17, 2014 5:28 PM

Adrian Peterson is a 1 trick pony. He had fewer receptions than Lacy last year and like has always been the case over his career…..he is a horrible blocker. That’s why he always came off the field on 3rd and long over his career.

  81. whatthehellisgoingonoutthere says: Jul 17, 2014 5:30 PM

Suh ends Lacy’s season? LMAO If you watch American Muscle last night on Discovery Channel you would see that Suh is a quitter who becomes unraveled when things don’t go his way. In his case he quit because he was being out lifted and outrun by another DT from the Titans. Pretty telling.

  82. whatthehellisgoingonoutthere says: Jul 17, 2014 5:31 PM

Suh ends up kicking people in the nuts or stomping on them when the going gets tough and he’s being manhandled. Pretty easy to get in the head of someone like that when you know they will become unglued and beat themselves.

What have I denied? Your spin has you confused. The torch being passed means exactly what I said in that Peterson yards from scrimmage were equal to that of Lacy’s. One rb back is young and ascending while one is oft injured and declining. Those are facts try and dispute the stats all you want. Just don’t blame PFT for deleting part of your posts because quite frankly that was lame

I had to laugh when the first two comments came from obsessed Viking trolls with their smartphones programmed to let them know when a Packer story shows up. How pathetic is that?

All they have is insults and put downs. Their team cannot provide anything close to bragging rights. Pretty weak ammunition I would say.
