Patriots waive a pair of undrafted rookie wideouts

Reese Wiggins AP

The Patriots waived undrafted rookie wide receivers Jeremy Johnson and Reese Wiggins on Thursday, the club said.

The transactions leave the Pats with three open roster spots.

Johnson and Wiggins signed with New England on May 27. Johnson (6-0, 180) played collegiately at Southern Methodist, while Wiggins (5-11, 185) is an East Carolina product.

The Patriots currently have nine receivers on the roster. The club’s rookies report for training camp on Sunday, with veterans slated to report on Wednesday.

I honestly dont think the Patriots evaluate WR talent well. I thought that rookie trio stunk it up last year, as in they lacked talent.
I know they can draw a beautiful offense, but you gotta use higher quality out wide if you wanna beat the Seagulls. Make the trade for Andre Johnson!

I hope one of them catches on with another team and finishes his career with 900 career receptions.

Getting cut this early makes them more roster casualties than camp casualties. The WR position is deep for the Pats heading into camp, and they must have needed those 2 slots for another position.

Makes sense to me. Tony Gonzalez still hasn’t said no to the possibility of joining the Patriots this season. They could be freeing up space to bring in a veteran Tight End.

Both probably make the Hawks roster

The Receivers that are cut are good, but they don’t fit into the Patriots System.

Patriot System = Guys that can get open 5 yards from the line of scrimmage, or that can push off to create separation. Brady can’t throw downfield as he doesn’t have the arm strength. They need a Welker or a Gronkowski – nothing else.

Well, since they have 9 receivers they needed to make some space but I don’t think they should have cut rookies since they are only rookies and may turn into great receivers. Wes Welker became an awesome undrafted reciever and played for the Patriots.

Patriots: 2 superbowls and 4 AFCCG since spygate. How is your team doing since 2007?

Saints. Nothing done since bounty program.

Trolls, trolls, and more trolls. If there’s anyone here who actually knows anything about football, can you tell me if the NFI list means they’re done for the year, like IR?

My guess is that you do not want Giants fans to answer this

The Giants did beat the Pats twice… in very close games… but the Pats have been a viable candidate for the Super Bowl in all but 1 year since 2007 (and they won 11 games in that year)… So it hasn’t been too bad to be a Pats fan since 2007, but please Bills fan, feel free to lecture us NE fans on the meaning of success! Oh, and we got Revis this year, so suck on that!

The Patriots have the worst WR’s in the AFC East, hands down. System QB that wouldn’t start on any other team in the NFL. Matt Cassel proved this. Swagger52 is right, Brady just throws the ball 5 yards. #system QB, #spygate, #cheaters.

  19. jimmyt says: Jul 18, 2014 7:49 AM

I can understand why Pats fans bristle when they are reminded of their teams cheating ways. It must be very embarrassing to have given all that support only to find out all those successes were tainted by cheating.

You really believe what you typed here? Of course you don’t. Brady a system QB… lets see, they did have the worst WR’s in the league last year and still made the AFC Championship game. No system QB is going to pull that off. Payton Manning wouldn’t pull that off. Yet give Brady, Brees, Rogers or even Stafford the Broncos offense from last year and they all do what Payton did (a few of them might actually win the SB).

When all the haters teams are knocked out and the last man standing has a flying elvis on his helmet we’ll talk about it again! Seems to be a perenial winning team that draws haters outta the dregs of society(Bills fans Vikes fans etc…) Peyton has had his last hurrah and maybe Brady is long in the tooth but he can put the ball where it needs to be. They got rid of guys that couldn’t hold onto the ball in pressure games like the SB (wesley welker, ground ball LLoyd etc) They find a way to win with what ever they have on the roster, seems to make others jealous? IDKY

Tom Brady has as many playoff wins as Mark Sanchez since 2006…How many does your QB have?

    SKOL !

Belichek hand each of them a little piece of paper and mumbled:

‘You are no longer the WR of the NEP’
