Kluwe say his dispute with Vikings “is about to get real”

Chris Kluwe AP

We hinted a bit earlier via Twitter that it could be a good time for another NFL bad news dump for a reason.  We’d heard that something may be happening today in connection with the Vikings’ investigation of former punter Chris Kluwe’s claim of homophobic comments and retaliatory discharge.

It didn’t happen.  Or, perhaps more accurately, it hasn’t happened yet.

Or maybe it’s still happening, and Kluwe doesn’t like whatever it will be.

Never let it be said that I didn’t try,” Kluwe said at roughly 5:00 p.m. ET.  “Apparently the Vikings want to do this the hard way.”

Kluwe then suggests that more will come out next week, primarily because he’s currently at something called Quakecon.

“And yes, shit is about to get real,” Kluwe adds.  “Unfortunate that it has to come to this.”

“This” apparently will be the lawsuit that Kluwe’s lawyer recently said was coming if the Vikings don’t disclose the report of the investigation.  The two sides were due to meet Thursday, presumably in a last-ditch effort to resolve the situation amicably.

Kluwe will win in the court of public opinion, but legally he has NO case.

A prominent lawyer on a local radio station has stated there is no legal basis for a suit. Kluwe worked for an entity in a “work at will” state and he isn’t in a protected class (age, race, sexuality, etc). He also stated he discussed the case with a highly regarded Civil Rights lawyer and that individual has no idea what Kluwe could possibly be suing for.

Given Kluwe ran to Deadspin in the first place, publicity and making Priefer look like an ass is all Kluwe is concerned with. He has plenty of time and a lawyer willing to come along with him.

  7. ap20k says: Jul 18, 2014 5:27 PM

Kluwe and his lawyer could easily settle this out of court. I am not sticking up for what Priefer said, it was stupid and ignorant, but the deeper this story goes, the more I feel like it’s not even about a gay slur/comment anymore. It feels like revenge. It feels more directed at Priefer and not the Vikings.

The Vikings sole purpose is to operate a pro football team. Maybe they didn’t handle it 100% correct but the less “negative” news regarding the franchise the better. It was purely a business decision to let him go and oh btw there was a better, cheaper, younger player available in the draft. That’s how the NFL works. Move on, Kluwe. Move on.

  8. stellarperformance says: Jul 18, 2014 5:28 PM

Go for it Kluwe. You have my support. You’re doing the right thing (and it’s not a money grab.) I’m as tired of bigots as you are.

Good for him! Instead of villifying Kluwe with your backhanded 1950’s slurs, you should be applauding him for taking the Vikings to task on this. The NFL is NOT North Korea and shouldn’t be able to cover up anything it wants under the b.s. excuse of protecting the shield.

    Good luck Chris Kluwe!!

I want to see Kluwe do the following:

    1) Call Leslie Frazier a coward to his face, as he did in his Deadspin article.

    2) Call Rick Spielman a coward to his face, as he did in his Deadspin article.

    3) Call Mike Priefer a bigot to his face, as he did in his Deadspin article.

    4) Tell his ex-teammates that he’s going to force the conversations they had with the Vikings investigative lawyers that he is going to force their conversations into the public realm, even though the organization promised them confidentiality in exchange for honest, forthright descriptions of what did or did not happen.

    5) Pull the other 31 franchises into the suit to explain why they didn’t sign him to punt, because he is undoubtedly the single greatest punter that ever took the field.

First off, we dont know what the report has to say as it hasnt been made public yet so if you attack Priefer, the Vikings, or Kluwe on this issue you are just jumping to conclusions based on assumption and opinion. Secondly, While I support the LGBTQ community, what legal ground is Kluwe standing on. I saw tweets that he was asking the Vikings to donate a million plus dollars to the LGBTQ community, which seems like a large amount for someone with no legal ground to stand on.

  32. Aaron Rodgers has Tiny Hands says: Jul 18, 2014 6:03 PM

Part of me would like to see this lawsuit play out because I’d like to see Kluwe lose. He doesn’t have a case and I’m sure his lawyer knows it. On the other hand, I don’t want this distraction hanging over the club for the whole season and I don’t want to see Priefer’s name dragged through the mud any more than it already has been. It might be smart to offer Kluwe a settlement just to make the whole thing go away, keep the details out of the public eye, and get on with the business of football.

  33. kwjsb says: Jul 18, 2014 6:12 PM

    NFL teams despise distractions
    Kluwe made himself one…
    The media made Tewbow one

Both are no longer in the league.

Different sides of the political spectrum, treated equally

  34. contra74 says: Jul 18, 2014 6:14 PM

I wish Kluwe would just shut up.

Does he think he is helping or doing harm to his cause with how he is going about this?

  35. Aaron Rodgers has Tiny Hands says: Jul 18, 2014 6:15 PM

I don’t know what Mike Priefer said, the context in which it was said, whether it was a pattern of behavior, or what Kluwe may have said to bring it on. I do know that Priefer spent six years in the Navy and has been a football coach since then. Those probably aren’t the ideal environments for learning how to express yourself in a politically correct manner.

Just a thought, but maybe Kluwe should be thanking Priefer for his service to his country, protecting Kluwe’s right to speak up for whatever cause he wants to promote, rather than suing him.

  40. holdsteady76 says: Jul 18, 2014 6:28 PM

Ordinarily when I browse PFT comments I’m expectingtom foolery, but the comments to this article are down right sad.

Kluwe is speaking out for something that we should be well past as a society. To degrade an individual based on race, gender, or sexual orientation is pure ignorance and is harmful to society. Anyone if you slamming Kluwe for standing up for this ought be ashamed.

I’m a native Minnesotan and have been a Vikings fan all my life. If the team knew if this and chose to do nothing or worse yet are still choosing to covet it up then I’m ashamed of my franchise. However to single the Vikings ought as the only organization where the exists in the NFL is ignorant.

    This issue goes beyond football.

This is ridiculous, its a locker room environment with alpha males running their mouth cause that’s the culture of football. If Kluwe’s attorney’s force the Minnesota Vikings through litigation to donate a million dollars to a cause that not everyone supports is borderline extortion. Why didnt the juggernaut of social liberty beat his chest the moment it happened? Prob b/c he wasnt the beacon of social liberty as he projected himself to be as long as he was being paid. The LGBT issue should have nothing to do with Kluwe’s lawsuit as his production on the field should highlight his failure to continue his NFL career.

Long before he was cut I couldn’t stand him. Why? After the roof collapsed and the vikings played at tcf he cried about the cold and the field, BUT then in the game he punted horribly and as the “booo’s” rained down he pumped his fists and egged on the crowd. He literally pumped his fists and celebrated his terrible punts and the fact he was getting booo’d. Self absorbed hack…i

The irony of ironies is that Kluwe was actually let go from his job because he wasn’t very good at it, no matter what was said or not said in the locker room.

Now the Vikings have to defend the fact that kept 53 other players on the roster who, like Kluwe, weren’t very good at their jobs either as evidenced by their 3 out 4 last place finishes in just the past 4 years. Now how do you advocate that you are justified in cutting Kluwe and keeping Ponder, they both suck, its hard to argue one sucks any worse than the other.

  54. vikingsfan4life says: Jul 18, 2014 7:29 PM

How would you like to work for a private business whose internal HR investigations were made public? Kluwe is trying to set a precedent with dangerous consequences.

Oh and he has no case. The Vikings paid Kluwe like a top-10 punter but his stats were in the bottom third. Then he couldn’t win a job in Oakland. Only then did he go after Priefer. Players get cut all the time. Kluwe likes to think he’s different but he’s not.

I guess his pony just doesn’t as brightly as he thought.

Kluwe was once a pretty good punter. But not the last few years. A lot of veterans have hung around because they were good locker toom guys and good professionals. It turns out when his skills started to slip, he has shown himself to be neither. Good riddance.

Watch him drop this if the judge puts a gag order on the case.

Considering this was an action of Priefer, he should be the one paying the money, not the Vikings, and while I do not know his salary, the highest paid offensive or defensive coordinators make just over a million dollars, while other assistants earn 200-300 thousand, so it should be safe to assume that a special teams coach makes about 750 thousand or something no higher than that per year. Therefore, asking for more money than Priefer is making per year seems to high to me.

This development can really help the Washington D.C. franchise. Social activists will now focus their attention on the vikings. A hostile workplace is a much larger issue that people can understand.

D.C fans know that the Kluwe scandal will still be going a year from now with frequent leaks through the discovery process. PFT will have plenty of clicks coming from this scandal as it grows.

The vikings could have settled the matter and had a confidentiality agreement, but they want to go through this long public relations nightmare.

    Happy times for D.C.

Step 2. We put all the killers on an island and nuke it until it glows…

revenge doesn’t work….ever. Neither does taking something through violence.

    In my uneducated opinion…

Kluwe needs to stop trying to make himself look like a hero and activist while using revenge and hate as his tactics.
