The 49ers put nose tackle Ian Williams on the active/physically unable to perform list on Friday, the club said.
The 24-year-old Williams suffered a broken left leg in the 49ers’ September 15 loss at Seattle. He has since had four surgical procedures on his injured leg. The injury occurred on a low block and was suffered in Williams’ first career start.
A Notre Dame product, Williams is entering his fourth season with San Francisco, with whom he signed as an undrafted free agent in 2011. He has appeared in six regular season games for San Francisco.
By placing Williams on PUP now, the 49ers have the option to keep him on the list once the regular season begins. However, this would necessitate Williams missing at least six games. He can be removed from PUP at any time before the 53-player roster is finalized at the end of the preseason.
